Obama Takes Aim at Bush and McCainn
By ADAM NAGOURNEY and JEFF ZELENY
DENVER — Barack Obama accepted the Democratic Party presidential nomination tonight, declaring that the “American promise has been threatened” by eight years under President Bush and that John McCain represented a continuation of policies that undermined the nation’s economy and imperiled its standing around the world. The speech by Senator Obama of Illinois — in front of an audience of nearly 80,000 people on a warm night in a football stadium refashioned into a vast political stage for television viewers — left little doubt of how he intended to press his campaign against Mr. McCain this fall. And he linked Mr. McCain to what he described as the “failed presidency of George W. Bush” in cutting language that seemed intended to reassure nervous Democrats that he had the spine to take on what has proven this summer to be a scrappy Republican opponent.
“The record’s clear: John McCain has voted with George Bush 90 percent of the time,” Mr. Obama said. “Senator McCain likes to talk about judgment, but really, what does it say about your judgment when you think George Bush was right more than 90 percent of the time? I don’t know about you, but I’m not ready to take a 10 percent chance on change.” “America, we are better than these last eight years,” he said. “We are a better country than this.”
The speech by Mr. Obama loomed as arguably the most important of his campaign to date. It was an opportunity to present himself to Americans who were just now beginning to tune in on this campaign, to make the case against Mr. McCain and to offer what many Democrat said he has failed to offer to date: a idea of what Mr. Obama stood for, beyond a promise of change. With his speech, Mr. Obama closed out his party’s convention here and prepared for a quick shift of public attention to Republicans as Mr. McCain names his running-mate on Friday and his party begins its convention in St. Paul, Minn., on Monday.
He delivered it in a most unconventional setting, becoming the third nominee of a major party in the nation’s history to leave the site of his convention to give his acceptance speech at a stadium. In this case, it was Invesco Field, set against the Colorado Rockies and about a mile from the Pepsi Center where he had been nominated the night before, a site aides said was chosen to signal a break from typical politics and to permit thousands of his supporters from across the country to hear him speak.
And it came on a night that offered — by the coincidence of scheduling — a reminder of the historic nature of the Obama candidacy: 45 years to the day when Martin Luther King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech on the Washington Mall. Mr. Obama is the first African-American to be nominated for the White House by a major party, a fact that, for all its significance, has been barely mentioned over the course of this four-day gathering. Even in invoking the anniversary of the King speech, Mr. Obama only alluded to race.
“The men and women who gathered there could’ve heard many things,” he said. “They could’ve heard words of anger and discord. They could’ve been told to succumb to the fear and frustration of so many dreams deferred.
But what the people heard instead — people of every creed and color, from every walk of life — is that in America, our destiny is inextricably linked. That together, our dreams can be one.”
Mr. McCain marked the occasion by releasing an advertisement in which, looking into the camera, he paid salute to Mr. Obama and his accomplishment. “How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day,” Mr. McCain said. “Tomorrow, we’ll be back at it. But tonight Senator, job well done.” The advertisement stood in stark contrast to a summer of slashing attacks on Mr. Obama by Mr. McCain that apparently contributed to the tightening of this race.
Mr. Obama delivered his speech on a day of considerable political churn. Even as Mr. McCain was paying tribute to Mr. Obama on television, his aides disclosed that he made a choice for vice president and would announce it on Friday, timing designed to draw attention away from Mr. Obama on a day in which he and his running mate, Joseph R. Biden Jr., would be starting a victory lap across the country. Democrats spent the day concerned that news of Mr. McCain’s choice would leak out and steal attention from Mr. Obama’s big night.
Mr. Obama’s audience — delegates, donors but also thousands of Obama supporters from Colorado, a state that Mr. Obama is trying to yank from the Republican column, and across the country — began lining up to go through security and enter the stadium eight hours before Mr. Obama appeared on stage. As seats filled, they watched a series of musical performances, including Stevie Wonder, who sang, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered,” a staple of Obama rallies. But the table for Mr. Obama was also set by speeches from some of the best-known Democratic leaders who continued to lay out stark contrasts between Mr. Obama and Mr. McCain — lead by Al Gore, the former vice president who narrowly lost the White House in 2000 to Mr. Bush.
“Eight years ago, some said there was not much difference between the nominees of the two major parties and it didn’t really matter who became president,” Mr. Gore said, as police helicopters buzzed overhead. “Our nation was enjoying peace and prosperity. Some assumed we would continue both no matter the outcome. But here we all are in 2008, and I doubt anyone would argue now that election didn’t matter.”
And Mr. Gore confronted a question that has, fairly or not, hovered over Mr. Obama as he has struggled in his contest with Mr. McCain at a time when polls suggest Americans have turned against Mr. Bush and Republicans.
“Why is this election so close?” Mr. Gore asked. “Well I know something about close elections, so let me offer you my opinion. I believe this election is close today mainly because the forces of the status quo are desperately afraid of the change Barack Obama represents.”
Mr. Obama used much of his speech to link Mr. McCain and Mr. Bush — a line of attack that his aides continue to view as their strongest going into the fall — and signaled that he saw next week’s Republican convention, when Mr. McCain and Mr. Bush are to appear together, although briefly, as a way to press that line of attack. “Next week, in Minnesota, the same party that brought you two terms of George Bush and Dick Cheney will ask this country for a third,” he said. “And we are here because we love this country too much to let the next four years look just like the last eight. On November 4th, we must stand up and say: “Eight is enough.”
With his speech, Mr. Obama scored Mr. McCain for raising questions about his patriotism, suggested his campaign was trying to turn a big election into a fight on small squabbles, and falsely tried to diminish him by presenting him as a celebrity. He offered a list of people who had inspired him in his life — from his grandmother to a unemployed factory workers he had met on the campaign — in refuting Mr. McCain. “I don’t know what kind of lives John McCain thinks that celebrities lead, but this has been mine,” he said. “These are my heroes. Theirs are the stories that shaped me. And it is on their behalf that I intend to win this election and keep our promise alive as President of the United States.”
“What is that promise?” he continued. “It’s a promise that says each of us has the freedom to make of our own lives what we will, but that we also have the obligation to treat each other with dignity and respect.” Speaking in generally broad terms, Mr. Obama offered a contrast between Republican and Democratic views of the role of government.
“We measure the strength of our economy not by the number of billionaires we have or the profits of the Fortune 500, but by whether someone with a good idea can take a risk and start a business, or whether the waitress who lives on tips can take a day off to look after a sick kid without losing her job – an economy that honors the dignity of work.”The scene inside Mile High stadium was surely one of the most unusual sights in the annals of American political conventions. Overnight, the familiar trappings of the convention hall were moved outdoors, with banners from every state filling the field where the Denver Broncos play football.
The seats of the stadium gradually filled throughout the afternoon, with Democrats lining up for hours to hear Mr. Obama’s acceptance speech. The atmosphere was one of celebration, with a resolution read into the convention’s minutes stating, “Martin Luther King would have been proud.” This was by any measure a risky gambit by a campaign that has shown a taste for taking chances and breaking with convention, as his aides acknowledged. Bad weather could have soaked the moment — Mr. Obama’s first question to aids when they proposed this was, “Will it rain?” It did not; the day was dry, if warm.
When John F. Kennedy held his outdoor rally at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in June 1960 half the seats were empty, as a New York Times dispatch noted in dismissively describing the event as a “fresh air vaudeville.”
Here, the stadium here was packed by 5:15 p.m. Mountain Time, five hours before Mr. Obama was to take the stage, after a week in which Democrats and Obama supporters had been hustling for tickets.
The biggest risks, though, as Mr. Obama’s advisers acknowledged, was that the sheer theatricality and scale of the debate — the cheering crowd, the Hollywood-style style stage — would reinforce what has emerged as the dominant line of Republican attack on him: that he is a celebrity without the substance or experience to deal with the problems facing the country. Coming into the convention, Republicans had ridiculed the set, likening it to a Greek temple.
In fact, on television, it looked more like a the dignified facade of a Federal building in Washington. Faded red T-Shirts that were distributed during a crucial moment in his Iowa primary campaign, the Jefferson-Jackson Day speech that helped turn his candidacy around, could be seen throughout the stands. As thousands began streaming into the stadium, Mr. Obama made a brief visit this afternoon to the women of the Illinois delegation, teasing them with an appearance at a hotel podium. “I have a speech tonight; I wanted to practice it out on you guys,” Mr. Obama said as the women cheered. “See if it works.”
Mr. Obama thanked the Democratic activists for getting his political career started, pointing out friends in the crowd who worked on his state senate campaign, his failed congressional campaign and his successful run for the United States Senate. “This is like going back on memory lane," he said. "I have not forgotten where I came from. I haven’t forgotten who got me here. It’s because of all of you.”
Democrats said one reason for the move to the stadium — which has been criticized as pretentious by the McCain campaign — was to give a sense of a more open convention, allowing the average voter into an event that has historically been accessible mainly to the party elite. Aides to Mr. Obama said they hoped that by allowing thousands of Colorado residents into the stadium for the closing speech and accompanying celebration, they could help carry a message and secure the electoral votes of a crucial swing state.
“Colorado is probably one of the most important states in this election,” Dan Pfeiffer, a campaign spokesman, told reporters in a conference call. “If John McCain does not win this state, he has a very, very limited chance of winning the White House. And so we think that tonight, by bringing these tens of thousands of Coloradans in, by turning it into a working, organizing experience, we’re going to take great steps to winning the state in the fall.”
At the same Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware, who accepted his party’s nomination for vice president last night with a blistering attack on Senator McCain, today told delegation members from Pennsylvania, a crucial swing state, that they had serious work to do. “This is not hyperbole,” Mr. Biden, who was raised in Scranton, Pa., said at a breakfast with Pennsylvanians. “We cannot win without Pennsylvania.” Michael Luo, Janet Elder, Carl Hulse, Kitty Bennett and Jim Rutenberg contributed reporting.
