Preparing for an All-nighter?

CAT: It’s that time Greg! Get your coffee and energy drinks stocked up.

GREG: Oh yeah! It’s already time for midterms. Preparing for an all-nighter?

CAT: Yup! This semester I’m trying to get a study group together.

I have friends who are willing to cram all night with me. You’re more than welcome to join!

Greg: Thanks CAT, but I won’t be studying too much. I have an open-book test.

CAT: Lucky you! But you still need to study for an open-book test. It’s actually quite a bit harder than you think.

Greg: Hmm…I’ll think about it.

A: 드디어 올 것이 왔다, Greg! 커피랑 에너지 드링크 많이 사다 놔!

B: 그러게. 벌써 중간 고사네! 밤 샐 준비는 돼 있니?

A: 응. 이번 학기는 스터디 그룹 만들어서 공부해 보려고. 몇 몇 친구들이 같이 밤 새며 벼락공부 하자고 해서 말이야. 너도 언제든 환영이야!

B: 고마워 CAT, 하지만 난 공부 그렇게 많이 하지는 않을 것 같아.
난 오픈 북 시험 이거든. (난 교과서 펴놓고 시험 볼 수 있거든.)

A: 좋겠다! 하지만 오픈 북 시험이라고 하더라도 여전히 공부는 해야 할걸.  오픈 북 시험 생각보다 그리 쉽진 않을 거야.

B: 한번 생각해 볼게!

• A: Did you usually cram for tests, or did you consistently study?
당신은 시험 전날 벼락 공부 하는 편이었나요, 아니면 미리 미리 공부를 하는 편이었나요?

B: I get pressured if I put myself in that situation, where I would need to cram for a test, so to avoid that, I tried studying little by little consistently.
전 미리 시험에 대비를 하지 않고 하루 전날 벼락 공부를 해야 하는 상황에 처하면 너무 불안하고 부담감이 느껴져서요, 그런 걸 피하기 위해 미리 꾸준히 공부를 하는 편이었습니다.

A: Have you stayed up all night studying?
밤을 새서 공부를 해 본적이 있나요?

B: Yeah, plenty of times.
네, 여러 번 있습니다.
How about you?

A: Pulling an all-nighter was the last thing that I would do, so I haven’t stayed up all night studying before, but I did study till about 1 or 2 am for tests.
전 밤을 새서 공부하는 거 별로 안 좋아해서 밤새 공부하는 적은 없지만, 새벽 한 두 시까지는 공부를 해본 적은 있습니다.

• Get your coffee and energy drinks stocked up.
커피랑 에너지 드링크 미리 많이 사다 놔.
- ‘Stock up’은 ~’(무엇 무엇을) 대량으로 구입하다, 사재기 하다’는 뜻이 있는데요, 그래서 ‘Get your coffee and energy drinks stocked up’ 하면 커피랑 에너지 드링크 미리 많이 사다 놓으라는 뜻이 되죠.

Ex) A: Have you stocked up on anything?
무엇인가를 대량으로 구입해 본 적 있나요?

B: I’m from Southern California, where we’re prone to earthquakes and I would stock up on water and batteries for flashlights.
전 지진이 자주 나는 남 가주 지역에 살았는데요, 그래서 지진에 대비해 물이랑, 후레시 배터리 같은 것을 대량으로 사다 놓은 적이 있습니다.
How about you? Have you stocked up on anything?

A: For me, I stocked up on canned goods and bottles of water after the earthquake in VA.
전 몇 달 전 동부 지역에 지진이 났을 때 만약을 대비해 물이랑 캔 제품을 좀 많이 사다 놨죠.

• Preparing for an all-nighter?
밤 샐 준비는 돼있니?
- ‘all night, all night long’ 하면 ‘밤새도록, 하룻밤 내내’라는 뜻입니다.
또 ‘all-night’ 뒤에 ‘er’을 붙여 ‘all-nighter’하면 ‘밤을 새는 것’을 의미하죠.
그래서 preparing for an all-nighter? 하면 너 밤 샐 준비 돼있니? 라는 뜻입니다.

-밤을 새다: Pull an all-nighter
Ex) 나 어제 밤 새 공부했어.
-  Last night, I pulled an all-nighter studying.
(= Last night, I stayed up all night studying.)

* 참고: I stayed up all night studying은 밤새 한 숨도 안자고 공부했다는 걸 의미하고요, 밤을 새지는 않았지만 늦게 까지 안자고 공부했다는 ‘I stayed up late last night studying’으로 나타낼 수 있다는 것도 알아두세요!

* 밤 새 ~ (무엇 무엇)을 하다

Ex) 나 어제 밤 한 숨도 안 자고 일했어.
- I worked all night long.
(= I stayed up all night long working.)
(= I stayed up all night working.)

나 밤새 한 숨도 안자고 운전했어.
- I drove all night long last night.
(= I drove all night long.)

• This semester I’m trying to get a study group together.
이번 학기는 스터디 그룹을 만들어서 공부해 보려고.

- A study group is a small group of people, mostly students, who regularly meet to study and share discussions about their field of study.
스터디 그룹은 같은 수업을 듣는 친구들끼리 같이 모여 공부도 하고 서로 토론도 하는 것을 의미합니다.

ex) A: Did you like to study alone, or get a study group together?
혼자 공부 하는 걸 좋아했나요, 아니면 스터디 그룹을 만들어서 공부하는 걸 좋아했나요?

B: I prefer studying alone.
전 혼자 공부하는 걸 더 좋아했습니다.
How about you?

A: I usually got together with my classmates and studied.
전 같은 수업을 듣는 친구들이랑 모여서 같이 공부했어요.
I got a lot of help from the study group.
스터디 그룹하면서 친구들에게 모르는 것도 많이 물어보면서 많은 도움을 받았습니다.
But some people don’t like to do study groups because they spend too much time talking to each other rather than focusing on studying.  
하지만 스터디 그룹을 하면 공부에 집중도 잘 안되고 서로 잡담을 나누는데 시간을 낭비해 별로 좋아하지 않는 사람들도 많이 있죠.

• I have friends who are willing to cram all night with me.
- I have friends 친구들이 있다 who are willing to cram 벼락 공부를 하려고 하는 all night 밤 새도록 with me 나랑 같이
즉 ‘나랑 같이 밤 새도록 벼락 공부 하자고 하는 친구들이 있어서 말이야.’라는 뜻입니다.

‘Cram’에는 ‘좁은 곳에 밀어 넣다, 채워 넣다, 벼락 공부를 하다’ 등 다양한 의미가 있는데요, 이 ‘Cram’이 일상 생활에서 어떻게 쓰이는지 알아볼까요?

Ex) 난 간신히 내 모든 물건들을 다 옷장에 집어 넣었다.
-  I managed to cram all my belongings into the closet.

난 내일 수학 시험을 위해 벼락공부 해야 돼!
- I have to cram for my math test tomorrow.

시험 바로 전날에 벼락 공부하지 마세요!
- Don’t cram right before a test!

• A: what are the ways students can get good grades on tests?
시험에서 좋은 성적을 받으려면 어떻게 해야 하나요?

B: You have to go over what you’ve learned every day.
그 날 배운 것은 그날 복습해야 합니다.
(=You have to review your notes every day.)

You have to prepare for your lesson every day.
다음 날 배울 것을 미리 예습 해야 합니다.
(=You have to preview for your lesson every day.)

• Open-book test: 교과서를 펴 놓고 보는 시험

- Multiple choice test: 다 지선다형 시험
- Fill-in the blank test: 빈 칸 채우는 시험
- essay test: 에세이 시험, 어떤 주제에 대해 자신의 의견이나 생각을 글로 적는 시험
- True or false test: 주어진 문장이 맞으면 True, 틀리면 False라고 적는 시험
- Take-home test: 집에 가서 시험을 보고 정해진 기간 안에 제출하는 시험

• It’s actually harder than you think.
- It’s actually harder 그건 실제로는 더 어려워 than ~무엇 무엇 보다 you think, 네가 생각하는 것
즉 오픈 북 시험은 네가 생각하는 것 보다는 실제로는 더 어려워, 생각하는 것만큼 그리 쉽진 않을 거야, 라는 뜻인데요, 네가 생각하는 것보다 더 ~어렵다 ‘something is harder than you think’로 나타낼 수 있습니다.

Ex) 영어를 배우는 것은 생각 보다 어렵습니다, 영어 배우는 것은 생각만큼 그리 쉽지 않습니다.
J: Learning English is harder than you think.

반대로 ‘~(무엇 무엇)하는 것은 생각보다 더 쉽다’는 영어로 ‘something is easier than you think’라고 나타낼 수 있는데요, 예를 들어, ‘김치를 만드는 것은 생각 보다 쉬워요!’ 영어로는’Making Kimchi is easier than you think.’ 할 수 있습니다.
