<Description of the Image Below>
This image expresses the transition from understanding the principles of nature to feeling and following the flow of energy through the body.
The Earth’s tilted axis and the circles, lines, and waves symbolize the principles of nature.
The light flowing through the martial artist’s body and sword and returning to the earth represents Follow the Energy and the natural flow of KiMu.
I will soon be traveling to Maryland, USA, for the 2026 Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo Seminar.
Last year, we learned to understand the principles of nature.
This year, we will learn to feel them through our bodies and follow their flow.
■ From Understanding Nature to Following Its Flow
At last year’s Ohio seminar, I drew circles, lines, and wave-like curves on the board while explaining the principles of nature, human life, and the origin of KiMu.
The Earth revolves around the Sun with its axis tilted at 23.5 degrees. Because of this tilt, the seasons arise, day and night change, and life continues through cycles. The balance of nature is not a perfectly vertical and motionless state. It is a living balance that continually moves and changes without losing its overall harmony.
The same is true of the human body and mind.
We cannot always live perfectly upright and entirely free from disturbance. Sometimes the body becomes ill, the mind is shaken, and we lose our direction in life. What matters is not that we never waver, but that we learn to find our center again within that instability.
This is the balance of nature, and it is the balance we must learn through martial arts training.
Last year, we focused on intellectually understanding these principles of nature. This year, we will go one step further and experience through our bodies how these principles actually work within our breathing, movement, mind, and consciousness.
The starting point is Follow the Energy.
We usually try to move our bodies through our own strength, move others according to our own intentions, and force the results we desire. However, when we use excessive force, the body becomes tense, the breath becomes restricted, and the mind loses contact with the flow of nature.
KiMu training is not a method of forcibly creating energy. It is the practice of observing and feeling the flow that already exists, and then following it without interference.
First, observe.
Then, feel.
Next, follow.
Finally, let go.
Observe.
Feel.
Follow.
Let go.
Letting go of oneself does not mean losing consciousness. Rather, as personal desire and fixed ideas recede, a clearer and more expansive awareness begins to emerge.
The first requirement for this is breathing.
Natural breathing connects the body and mind. When the breath becomes rough, the mind also becomes unsettled. When the breath becomes even and calm, the body and mind begin to return to their proper state.
For this reason, KiMu does not teach us to hold the breath for a long time or to control it by force. Through Even Breathing—in which inhalation and exhalation do not struggle against one another but continue in a natural flow—we create the conditions that allow the body to stabilize itself.
When the breath becomes natural, movement also changes.
The sword must not move through the strength of the arms alone. The sword must follow the body, the body must follow the mind, and the mind must follow nature.
The sword follows the body.
The body follows the mind.
The mind follows nature.
When we understand this principle, we no longer force the sword to move. Instead, the sword begins to move naturally within the flow of the entire body. Straight and curved movements, forward and backward movements, left and right movements, and rotation are no longer disconnected. They become connected like a single wave.
KiMu is not merely a series of movements or a beautiful dance. It is the movement of energy through which the breathing and rhythm of nature are expressed by the body.
When this flow becomes established in the body through repeated training, the body begins to respond to the direction of nature before conscious thought arises. This is KiMuche—the process through which the body develops the ability to receive and transmit the flow of nature by itself.
Meditation and prayer are based on the same principle.
Meditation is not about leaving reality and remaining in the invisible world. It is about entering one’s inner world, examining what needs to be understood, and then returning to reality to live more properly.
Meditating for a long time does not necessarily indicate deep practice. Even a few minutes can be sufficient if we can breathe evenly and look honestly into our own minds. What matters more is how we think, how we speak, and how we treat other people after meditation.
True meditation does not take place only when our eyes are closed. Maintaining an awakened mind while walking, working, meeting people, and facing difficult circumstances is meditation within daily life.
KiMu Healing is not separate from this principle.
The primary purpose of healing is not to cure another person’s illness. We must first examine our own consciousness and transform our thoughts and way of living. Our first responsibility is to reduce greed, anger, and ignorance; practise love and consideration; and restore a proper relationship between ourselves and nature.
If I am unable to stand properly within myself, I cannot help another person become properly balanced. If my breathing is unstable and my mind is confused, I cannot transmit stable energy to another person.
Therefore, KiMu Healing looks first at the human heart and the direction of one’s life, rather than at technique. Healing is not a result that we forcibly produce. It is something that may arise naturally as a secondary result of proper training, the transformation of consciousness, and self-giving love.
For this reason, the healing arts within Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu are not a commercial means for personal gain.
This year, we will practise the five flows of KiMu together:
Breathing.
Movement.
Meditation.
KiMuche.
Healing.
However, these are not five separate techniques.
Breathing becomes movement.
Movement becomes meditation.
Meditation leads to transformation within the body.
When the transformed body and mind come into harmony with other living beings,
the possibility of healing finally begins to open.
Ultimately, the essence of KiMu does not lie in acquiring special abilities. It lies in realizing that the self, which we once believed to be separate from nature, has always existed within the flow of nature.
A teacher can only show the way. The principles of nature cannot be fully realized through explanation alone. Each person must feel and discover them directly through breathing, movement, and life itself.
Today, we are not training merely to memorize movements. We will observe, feel, and follow the flow of nature, experiencing together the process through which body and mind become one.
Do not force the energy.
Do not try to possess it.
Simply feel it and follow it.
This is the beginning of KiMu and the path through which martial arts and life become one.

Primero, observar.
Después, sentir.
Luego, seguir.
Finalmente, soltar.
Observe.
Feel.
Follow.
Let go.
The sword follows the body.
The body follows the mind.
The mind follows nature.
Do not force the energy.
Do not try to possess it.
Simply feel it and follow it.
No fuerces la energía.
No intentes poseerla.

Observe.
Feel.
Follow.
Let go.
The sword follows the body.
The body follows the mind.
The mind follows nature.
Breathing.
Movement.
Meditation.
Kimuche.
Healing.
Do not force the energy.
Do not try to possess it.
Simply feel it and follow it.
