♣ The Reason Weeds Grow in the World ♣

한 농부가 무더운 여름날 땀을 뻘뻘 흘리며 밭에서 잡초를 뽑아내고 있었습니다.
그의 입에서는 저절로 한숨이 새어 나왔고 짜증이 나기 시작했습니다
신은 왜 이런 쓸모없는 잡초를 만든 것일까?

A farmer was pulling weeds in his field on a sweltering summer day, sweating profusely.
A sigh escaped his lips involuntarily, and irritation began to build.
Why did God create such useless weeds?

이 잡초들만 없으면 오늘 이렇게 더운 날 땀을 흘리지 않아도 되고 밭도

깨끗할 텐데... 때마침 근처를 지나던 동네 노인 한 분이 그 말을 듣고는

농부를 타일렀습니다 여보게, 그 잡초도 무언가 책임을 띠고
이 세상에 존재하는 것이라네.

"If only these weeds weren't here, I wouldn't have to sweat on such a hot day, 

and the field would be clean..." Just then, 

an old man from the village passing by overheard this and admonished the farmer. 

"Look here, even those weeds exist in this world carrying a responsibility."

잡초는 비가 많이 내릴 때는 흙이 내려가지 않도록 막아주고 너무 건조한

날에는 먼지나 바람에 의한 피해를 막아주고 있네. 또한 진흙땅에 튼튼한
뿌리를 뻗어 흙을 갈아주기도 하지, 만일 그 잡초들이 없었다면
자네가 땅을 고르려 해도 흙먼지만 일어나고 비에 흙이 씻겨내려

이 땅은 아무 쓸모가 없이 되었을 거야..

Weeds prevent soil erosion when it rains heavily, and on very dry days, 

they protect against damage from dust and wind. 

They also spread strong roots into muddy soil to till it. If those weeds weren't there,

 even if you tried to level the ground, only dust would rise,

 and the rain would wash the soil away, rendering this land completely useless.

역시, 자네가 귀찮게 여긴 그 잡초가 자네의 밭을 지켜준 일등 공신이라네.”
그러므로 이 세상에는 아무 데도 쓸모없는 것은 없습니다. 모든 만물들은

나름대로 의미를 부여받고 갖고 이 세상에 보내진 것입니다

"Indeed, that weed you found a nuisance is the greatest contributor to protecting your field."
Therefore, nothing in this world is useless. All things,
are sent into this world, endowed with and bearing their own meaning.

비록 그 영혼은 보이지 않지만 꽃은 꽃의 모양과 향기의 옷을 입고,
잡초는 잡초 모양의 옷을 입고 세상에 보내졌습니다. 이 세상에 태어난

어느 것 하나 소중하지 않은 것이 없습니다. 단지 우리들의 좁은 생각이

그렇게 느낄 뿐 이 세상 모든 것들은 각각의 쓰임새와 의미로
세상을 빛내고 있는 것입니다.
Although their souls are invisible, flowers are sent into the world clothed in the form 

and fragrance of flowers, and weeds are clothed in the shape of weeds.
There is nothing born into this world that is not precious.
It is merely our narrow-mindedness that makes us feel this way; in reality,

everything in this world is illuminating the world with its own specific uses and meanings.

내가 지금 현제의 어떤 모습이건 내면에 뭔가 보이지 않는 가치를

수행하고 있는 거지요. 그 가치를 어떤 모습으로 어떻게 보여 주는가
관해서는 스스로 본인의 삶 과정 자신에게 달려 있는 거지요.

Regardless of my current appearance, 

I am carrying out some invisible value within.

 As for how and in what form that value is manifested, 

it depends on oneself, on the course of one's own life.
