Manner of Articulation (조음방법) In the previous section we saw how the consonants of English can be classified according to the part of the vocal tract which is involved. Bilabial sounds like /p b m/, for example, are made by using both lips. When we consider how the articulators behave when /p b/ are produced, we notice that the vocal tract is relatively unrestricted apart from from the bilabial closure. The lips form a complete seal momentarily, and the pressure of air behind the closed lips increases. When the lips are relaesed, the build up of pressure is suddenly relieved and the air escapes with force. This sudden release may be thought of as a mini explosion; hence the name PLOSIVE for this kind of consonant. More specifically, we can say that plosive is one of the various Manner of Articulation. The Manner of Articulation is concerned with the nature of the maximum constriction along the vocal tract. For the description of English, we can identify various types of structure: Plosives, Affricates, Fricatives, Nasals and Approximants. These different manners of articulation affect the air in various ways as it escapes from the lungs into the atmosphere. Plosives completely close the vocal tract at some point, then release. Affricates also block the vocal tract but only give a partial release which generates audible friction. fricatives only partially close the vocal tract and also generate audible friction as the air escapes. Approximants, like fricatives, only partially close the vocal tract, but unlike fricatives, they do not give rise to audible friction as the air passes between the articulators. |
