■ The Pilgrim and the Pilgrim’s Path, the Transmitter and the Path of Transmission
----
In the long journey of life, I reflect once again on what the right path of martial arts training truly means by considering the meaning of the pilgrim and the path the pilgrim walks, and through it, the transmitter of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu and the path of transmission.
In Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu, a pilgrim is not someone who merely travels in search of new techniques or special abilities.
A pilgrim is one who continuously walks the path of training in order to understand the principles of nature through the body and mind and to recover the innate human abilities that have long been forgotten.
The pilgrim’s path does not end with learning how to handle a sword skillfully.
Through the sword, the practitioner comes to understand the movement of the body, regulate the breath and mind, and observe, feel, and follow the energy flowing within oneself and throughout nature.
While walking this path, the practitioner lets go of unnecessary force and desire and restores an impartial normal mind and natural movement.
Therefore, what matters to a pilgrim is not how many forms and techniques have been learned.
What matters more is how deeply those principles have been embodied through the body and mind and how that training has transformed one’s consciousness and way of life.
Training in Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu is not merely the process of learning swordsmanship.
It is the process of directly feeling and embodying how the body and mind, technique, philosophy, and healing are interconnected and work together according to one underlying principle.
Technique awakens the body, philosophy establishes the proper direction of the mind, and healing guides us to use the energy and realization we have gained for the benefit of ourselves and other living beings.
These three elements are not separate fields. Together, they form one system of transmission intended to restore the complete abilities originally inherent in every human being.
As training deepens, the significance of healing naturally becomes increasingly prominent. In Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu, healing is not limited to treating physical pain or illness.
It is the process of observing one’s body and mind more deeply, becoming aware of the energy flowing within, and awakening the self that has long remained dormant through a transformation of consciousness.
Healing, therefore, is not a separate field added to technique and philosophy.
It is the process of awakening the body through technique, establishing the proper direction of the mind through philosophy, and putting that realization into practice for the benefit of oneself and others.
This is also the ultimate direction toward which the training of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu must proceed.
Likewise, a transmitter of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu is not merely someone who teaches techniques and forms. A transmitter understands technique, philosophy, and healing as manifestations of one principle and correctly passes on to the next person the teachings that have been embodied through the body and mind.
The purpose of a transmitter is not to make a student exactly like the teacher. It is to help the practitioner feel through the body, observe and realize independently without remaining dependent upon the teacher, and ultimately awaken the abilities that have been lying dormant within.
A transmitter cannot walk another person’s path on their behalf.
One can only point them in the right direction and guide them so that they may observe, feel, and follow the energy for themselves.
To do this, the transmitter must first walk that path and demonstrate the truth of the transmission by putting the teachings into practice in one’s own life.
The pilgrim takes up the sword and journeys inward, while the transmitter opens the path that has been discovered for the next person.
If the pilgrim’s path is the process of discovering, awakening, and completing oneself, the transmitter’s path is the process of sharing that realization with others and using it to benefit more lives.
Ultimately, the purpose of transmitting Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu is not limited to preserving martial techniques or expanding an organization.
Its purpose is to help each person awaken the body through technique, establish the mind through philosophy, and grow into a human being who benefits both oneself and others through healing.
This path goes beyond becoming a strong martial artist or an accomplished instructor. It is the path of realizing who one truly is, restoring the abilities originally inherent in every human being, and growing into a person who puts that realization into practice in daily life. Such a life is aligned with the ultimate purpose of human existence.
In this way, the practitioner does not remain merely a follower of teachings but becomes one who realizes the truth independently. Ultimately, that practitioner grows into a true transmitter who carries the teachings received onward to the next generation and to the wider world.
Conclusion — A Journey of Pilgrimage and Transmission
A pilgrim is one who follows the energy in search of the true self, while a transmitter is one who illuminates the path so that this realization may continue in the life of the next person.
When the pilgrim’s path, which begins with awakening oneself, develops into the transmitter’s path of benefiting other lives, the two paths ultimately become one.
The seminars held each month in different countries around the world are not merely martial arts events.
They are part of my own pilgrim’s path, continually inviting me to reflect upon my life and training.
At the same time, they form the transmitter’s path through which I pass on to others the techniques, philosophy, and healing of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu that I have embodied throughout my lifetime.
These international seminars are also precious places where I meet people across the world with whom I share a meaningful affinity. There, we share our hearts and experiences, and a path is opened for them to discover new possibilities through their own bodies and minds.
I set out on the journey to teach them, yet through meeting them, I continue to learn and reflect upon myself.
Therefore, my continuing journey across the countries of the world is not simply travel undertaken to transmit knowledge and techniques.
It is a pilgrimage and a journey of transmission in which I meet new people, awaken and learn together with them, and plant seeds so that they, too, may one day grow into transmitters who illuminate the path for others.
