ONE PRINCIPLE AND THE PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITY OF TRANSMITTING JINYOUNG SSANGKUM RYU
Today, as I look upon the morning sun rising here in Maryland, I find myself immersed in quiet contemplation.
Since the number of participants in this U.S. seminar is not large, I believe it will allow me to focus more closely on each individual and attempt a more advanced and elevated level of training than in previous seminars.
For this reason, even before the seminar begins, I have continued to share many writings explaining the purpose and direction of the training I wish to transmit. My intention is to help the participants prepare their minds in advance and understand the essence of what this seminar seeks to accomplish, rather than simply coming to learn new techniques.
After breakfast at the hotel this morning, I found myself with some time to spare. In this stillness, I began to reflect once again on what I should transmit during this seminar and how I should convey it.
At the center of these reflections is one simple expression:
As above, so below.
As within, so without.
What is above is reflected below,
and what is within is revealed without.
These words mean that heaven and earth, nature and humanity, mind and body, and body and sword are not separate from one another. Everything is connected under one universal principle.
This principle is also the foundation that unites the techniques, philosophy, meditation, medicine, and healing of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu.
1. EVERYTHING EXISTS UNDER ONE PRINCIPLE
The purpose of transmitting Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu is not merely to spread techniques for handling the sword. Its purpose is to guide practitioners to feel the flow of nature through the body and to express that flow through the movement of the sword by harmonizing body and mind.
The flow of the mind becomes the movement of the body, and the movement of the body is revealed outwardly through the sword. Therefore, to establish the movement of the sword correctly, one must first understand the body. To establish the body correctly, one must also examine the mind, breathing, consciousness, and the flow of nature.
The sword follows the body.
The body follows the mind.
The mind follows nature.
At the source of all these movements lies one principle.
2. TECHNIQUE, PHILOSOPHY, AND MEDICINE ARE ONE
Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu does not regard technique, philosophy, meditation, and medicine as separate fields.
The principle that moves the sword, the principle that restores the body, the principle that governs oneself, and the principle that helps another person may appear different, but they ultimately arise from the same source.
Through technique, we awaken to the principles of the body. Through the body, we observe the movements of the mind. Through the mind, we discover the principles of nature and life.
This one principle appears as movement in martial arts, as realization in philosophy, and as healing in medicine.
3. HEALING WITHIN ONE PRINCIPLE
The medicine of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu begins with the understanding that healing is possible because everything in the world is interconnected under one principle.
Body and mind, breathing and consciousness, humanity and nature are not separate from one another. Inner change appears in the body, and changes in the body influence the mind and consciousness in return.
Therefore, the possibility of healing does not depend solely upon some special power from outside. It also depends upon one’s willingness to receive healing, to allow oneself to change, and to put that change into practice in daily life.
Through repeated experiences of healing, I have come to realize this truth ever more deeply.
Healing is not the unilateral transfer of some power to another person. It is a process of helping the natural order and life force already present within that person begin to move freely once again.
4. BEYOND TREATMENT, TOWARD A CHANGE IN CONSCIOUSNESS
In Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu, however, treatment itself is not the ultimate purpose.
Treatment and healing are processes through which we look within our own body and mind and transform the consciousness with which we approach life. What matters is not merely reducing pain or restoring health, but awakening through that process to a renewed understanding of our relationship with nature and with other living beings.
True healing begins when we reflect upon ourselves through the pain of the body, correct the direction of our lives through a change of heart, and put that realization into practice through our daily actions.
When such a transformation of consciousness takes place, health and happiness may be enjoyed as additional blessings during our lifetime. And when the time comes for us to leave this life, we may go beyond physical health and approach the ultimate purpose of human existence: the maturation of the soul.
5. THE RESPONSIBILITY OF A TRANSMITTER OF JINYOUNG SSANGKUM RYU
The responsibility of a transmitter of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu is not limited to teaching techniques.
The transmitter’s responsibility is to illuminate the path so that practitioners may discover for themselves the principle of nature already present within their bodies and minds and put it into practice both in training and in everyday life.
Through the sword, we guide them to awaken to the body. Through the body, we guide them to look within the mind. Through a change of mind, we guide them toward the maturation of life and soul.
The path of transmission pursued by Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu may therefore be summarized as follows:
To awaken to technique through one principle,
to awaken to oneself through technique,
to transform consciousness through healing,
to set one’s life on the right path through transformed consciousness,
to benefit other living beings through that life,
and ultimately to bring one’s own soul to maturity.
This is the purpose of transmitting the techniques, philosophy, and medicine of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu to the world. It is also the responsibility of transmission that we must fulfill throughout the world today.

UN SOLO PRINCIPIO Y EL PROPÓSITO Y LA RESPONSABILIDAD DE TRANSMITIR JINYOUNG SSANGKUM RYU
-----
As above, so below.
As within, so without.
Sanar no significa transmitir unilateralmente algún poder a otra persona.

As above, so below.
As within, so without.
