Winners of the 2025 Underwater Photographer of the Year Contest

올해의 올해의 수중 사진작가 공모전 수상작이 최근 발표되었고, 알바로 헤레로(일명 메캔)가 새끼와 함께 수영하는 혹등고래 어미의 사진으로 2025년 올해의 수중 사진작가로 선정되었다. 광각, 매크로, 난파선, 행동, 인물, 흑백, 컴팩트, 신인 등의 부문에서 상과 표창이 수여되었다. 콘테스트 주최 측은 올해 수상작을 선정하여 사진작가가 직접 쓴 표제(表題)와 함께 다시 한번 친절하게 공유하도록 해주었다.

The winning entries in this year’s Underwater Photographer of the Year contest were recently announced, and Alvaro Herrero (a.k.a. Mekan) was named Underwater Photographer of the Year 2025 for an image of a mother humpback whale swimming with its calf. Prizes and commendations were handed out in categories including Wide Angle, Macro, Wrecks, Behavior, Portrait, Black & White, Compact, Up & Coming, and more. Contest organizers were once again kind enough to share with us a selection of this year’s honorees, with captions written by the photographers.

1. Ethereal Moonscape. Runner-up, Wide Angle. "A diver using a rebreather glides through one of my favorite caves in the Yucatán Peninsula. The rebreather was a critical piece of equipment for this shot. Using rebreathers in the caves allows us to spend much more time exploring their depths, and enhances my photos as it gives us the opportunity to precisely illuminate the scene." # © Alvaro Herrero (Mekan) / UPY2025

"천상의 달 풍경. 광각 부문 준 우승작. "수중 호흡기를 사용하는 다이버가 내가 가장 좋아하는 유카탄반도의 동굴 중 하나를 통과하고 있다. 수중 호흡기는 이번 촬영에 있어서 매우 중요한 장비였다. 동굴에서 수중 호흡장치를 사용하면 깊이를 탐색하는 데 훨씬 더 많은 시간을 할애할 수 있고 현장을 정확하게 조명할 수 있는 기회를 얻게 되므로 사진 품질이 향상된다."

2. Pink Cheeks. Third Place, Up & Coming. "This was my first time taking a camera underwater, and was nervous but excited. My goal was to get a tiny nudibranch in focus, and with the support of my husband, Adam Martin, and our amazing guides, I quickly fell in love with macro photography." # © Autumn Martin / UPY2025

분홍빛 볼. 업 앤 커밍 부문 3위 입상작. "수중에서 카메라를 촬영하는 것은 처음이라 떨렸지만 설렜다. 내 목표는 작은 갯민숭달팽이에 초점을 맞추는 것이었고, 남편 아담 마틴과 훌륭한 가이드들의 지원으로 나는 곧바로 매크로 사진에 푹 빠졌다."

3. Chasing Dolphins. Winner, Black & White. "This image was captured in the northern Red Sea during a free-diving expedition in search of bottlenose dolphins. The moment portrays an intimate mating ritual, where several males—four visible in the picture, though others were nearby—were playfully chasing a female. It was a dynamic and ritualistic display, with the males engaging in friendly skirmishes and occasionally mating with the female, their bodies joining briefly for just a few seconds. Notably, the female was not attempting to escape; she actively participated, playing along and waiting for them." # © Enric Gener / UPY2025

돌고래 추적(追跡). 흑백사진 부문 우승작. "이 이미지는 큰돌고래(병코돌고래, Tursiops truncatus)를 찾기 위한 프리다이빙 탐험 중 홍해 북부에서 촬영되었다. 이 순간은 친밀한 짝짓기 의식을 묘사하는데, 여러 수컷(사진에는 네 마리가 보이지만, 근처에 다른 수컷도 있음)이 장난스럽게 암컷을 쫓고 있었다. 그것은 역동적이고 의식적인 전시로, 수컷들이 친근한 소규모 전투를 벌이고 때때로 암컷과 짝짓기를 하며 몸이 몇 초 동안 잠시 합쳐졌다. 특히 암컷은 탈출을 시도한 것이 아니라 적극적으로 참여하고 함께 놀며 그들을 기다렸다."

4. Deep Sea Birds. Runner-up, Wrecks. "Aqaba is well known among most divers and was high on my wish list for years. Finally, a perfect opportunity was created by Carlos Diezel (the agile free diver you can see in this photo) in collaboration with Diverse Divers diving center. We were lucky to free dive all around Aqaba wrecks for the week. This photo was made on our second visit to this particular dive spot." # © Wojciech Dopierala / UPY2025

심해 조류. 난파선 부문 준 우승작. "아카바(요르단 남부에 위치한 항구도시)는 대부분의 다이버들에게 잘 알려져 있으며 수년 동안 내 희망 목록의 상위에 있었다. 마침내, 카를로스 디젤(이 사진에서 볼 수 있는 민첩한 프리 다이버)이 다이버시 다이버 다이빙 센터와 협력하여 완벽한 기회를 만들었다. 우리는 운 좋게도 아카바 난파선 주변을 자유롭게 다이빙할 수 있었다. 이 사진은 우리가 이 다이빙 장소를 두 번째로 방문했을 때 찍은 것이다."

5. Amazon River Dolphin Silhouette. Runner-up, Portrait. "I spent two weeks in Manaus, where about 10 operators feed the river dolphins, which are a draw to tourists. We visited a pontoon with four resident botos and a beach that draws about seven in daily. Botos look very unusual compared with other dolphins, with incredibly long rostra—with vestigial hairs on them, tiny eyes and thick bodies. The idea here was to try to get an unexpected view of a surprising animal most people have never heard about." # © Hussain Aga Khan / UPY2025

아마존강돌고래(분홍돌고래) 실루엣. 초상사진 부문 준 우승작. "나는 마나우스에서 2주간을 보냈는데 그곳에서 약 10명의 운영자가 강돌고래에게 먹이를 주는데, 이는 관광객들의 관심을 끌고 있다. 우리는 네 마리의 보토(강돌고래)가 있는 부교(浮橋)와 매일 약 일곱 마리의 보토가 있는 해변을 방문했다. 보토는 다른 돌고래에 비해 매우 독특해 보이며, 매우 긴 로스트라를 가지고 있으며, 흔적이 있는 털과 작은 눈, 두꺼운 몸을 가지고 있다. 여기서의 목적은 대부분의 사람들이 들어본 적 없는 놀라운 동물을 예상치 못한 시각으로 보기 위해서였다."

🐋보토는 아마존과 오리노코강 지류에 서식하는 여러 종류의 돌고래와 강돌고래에게 붙은 포르투갈 이름이다.

6. Disco Lion. Third Place, Macro. "As I back-rolled into the Lembeh Strait, the first thing that came into view was a table coral in eight to 10 meters of water. Atop the coral was a cloud of small baitfish surrounding a very pretty lionfish. An open aperture reveals detail in the lionfish's face but renders the small silvery fish as defocused, bokeh disco balls." # © Nicholas More / UPY2025

디스코 라이언(쏠배감펭). 매크로 부문 3위 입상작. "내가 렘베 해협으로 되돌아갔을 때, 가장 먼저 눈에 들어온 것은 8~10m 깊이의 물 속에 있는 테이블 산호였다. 산호 위에는 아주 예쁜 쏠배감펭을 둘러싼 작은 미끼 물고기 구름이 있었다. 조리개를 열면 쏠배감펭의 얼굴은 자세히 보이지만, 작은 은빛 물고기는 초점이 흐려진 보케 디스코 볼처럼 보인다."

7. A Frondly Snoot Boop. Third Place, Portrait. "The giant kelp forests of the Falkland Islands are among the lushest algal amphitheaters anywhere in the cold-water world. Their prodigious productivity supports a plethora of awesome aquatic animals, including this rambunctiously curious South American sea lion. Initially intrigued by this vibrant sea forest tucked away off the West Falkland archipelago, my dive buddies and I quickly found ourselves the center of a passing pride’s attention. An exuberant young male, with small scars of missing whiskers looking so much like adolescent acne on his face-forward personality, began his investigation slowly. Then suddenly was right in our faces, poking, prodding and jawing his way into figuring out what exactly was this bubbly beast barking in his backyard." # © Patrick Webster / UPY2025

상냥하게 스누트 부프(코나 주둥이). 초상사진 부문 3위. "포클랜드 제도의 거대한 다시마 숲은 냉수 세계에서 가장 무성한 해조류 원형 극장 중 하나이다. 그들의 엄청난 생산성은 이 난폭하고 호기심 많은 남미 바다사자를 포함한 수많은 멋진 수생동물을 지원한다. 처음에는 웨스트 포클랜드 군도에서 멀리 떨어진 이 활기찬 바다 숲에 흥미를 느꼈지만, 나와 나의 다이빙 친구들은 금세 지나가는 무리의 관심의 중심이 되었다. 얼굴을 앞으로 향한 성격에 사춘기 여드름처럼 보이는 작은 수염이 빠진 흉터가 있는 활기찬 젊은 수컷이 천천히 조사를 시작했다. 그러다 갑자기 우리 얼굴 바로 앞에 나타나서 이 거품이 많은 짐승이 뒷마당에서 짖고 있는 것이 정확히 무엇인지 알아내기 위해 찔러대고, 쑤시고, 턱을 괴고 있었다."

8. Fluo Spiny Squat Lobster. Runner-up, British Waters Macro and Most Promising British Underwater Photographer 2025. "This image was taken on a wonderful night dive at Inveraray, Loch Fyne. This site is known for being home to many beautiful fireworks anemones at shallow depths, but it also has an old pipe covered in concrete blocks that is home to lots of life, including the spiny squat lobster. These squat lobsters are usually found clinging upside down on boulders and overhangs and disappear the instant the camera shutter is pressed. However, on this night dive they were wandering about in the open and didn’t seem to mind having a few pictures taken. These squat lobsters show the brightest fluorescence I have seen in crustaceans, and I was really pleased on this dive to be able to capture the whole animal in frame." # © James Lynott / UPY2025

플루오 가시 스쿼트 랍스터(쪼그리고 앉은 랍스터). 영국 해역 매크로 부문 준 우승작 및 2025년 가장 유망한 영국 수중 사진작가상. "이 이미지는 파인 호수 인버라레이(스코틀랜드 아가일 앤 뷰트에 위치한 도시)에서 멋진 야간 다이빙을 하며 찍은 것이다. 이 장소는 얕은 수심의 아름다운 불꽃놀이 말미잘이 많이 서식하는 것으로 유명하지만 가시 스쿼트 랍스터를 비롯한 많은 생명체가 살고 있는 콘크리트 블록으로 덮인 오래된 파이프도 있다.

9. Radiant Bond. Winner, Wide Angle, and Underwater Photographer of the Year 2025. "A mother humpback whale accompanies her calf to the surface for its first breath early in the morning. The youngster is releasing a few bubbles as it rises, perhaps because it is still learning to control its breathing, or it is simply experimenting with its own body." # © Alvaro Herrero (Mekan) / UPY2025

래디언트(빛나는) 본드. 광각 부문 우승작 및 2025년 올해의 수중 사진작가상. "어미 혹등고래는 이른 아침에 첫 숨을 쉬기 위해 새끼를 수면 위로 데려간다. 어린 고래는 위로 올라오면서 몇 개의 거품을 내뿜는다. 아마도 아직 호흡을 조절하는 법을 배우고 있거나 단순히 자신의 몸을 실험하고 있기 때문일 것이다."

10. Dazzling Donut Doto. Runner-up, Macro. Bali, Indonesia. "I wanted to leave this inspirational place with a unique image of Doto greenamyeri, one of the most striking subjects in Tulamben. I created a dramatic glowing effect on the nudibranch with my strobe and snoot, and completed the frame by backlighting the host hydroid with subtle blue light to balance the composition." # © Bryan H. 눈부신 도넛 도토. 매크로 부문 준 우승작. 인도네시아 발리. "나는 툴람벤에서 가장 눈에 띄는 주제 중 하나인 도토 그리나미에리(바다 민달팽이, 해양 복족류 연체동물)의 독특한 이미지로 이 영감을 주는 장소를 남기고 싶었다. 스트로브 조명과 스누트로 갯민숭달팽이에 드라마틱한 빛나는 효과를 만들었고 구도의 균형을 맞추기 위해 은은한 푸른 빛으로 호스트 하이드로이드를 역광시켜 프레임을 완성했다."

🪘스누트는 연극 조명이나 사진 촬영에 사용되는 조명 위에 장착되어 광선의 방향과 반경을 제어하는 튜브로 광선의 방향과 반경을 조절하는 데 사용한다.

11. Water Zen. Runner-up, Black & White. "This image was taken at the Los Angeles Olympic send-off event for the USA Olympic Artistic Swimming Team. As the event photographer, I was able to photograph the team both underwater and from land. In this shot, the swimmer is warming up before the team's demonstration of its 2024 Paris Olympic routines by standing on the bottom of the pool engaged in a breathing exercise. Artistic swimmers have an incredible lung capacity and they are able to perform these unusual feats such as standing on the bottom of the pool, effortlessly." # © James Rokop / UPY2025

워터 젠. 흑백사진 부문 준 우승작. "이 이미지는 미국 올림픽 아티스틱 스위밍 팀의 로스앤젤레스 올림픽 환송 행사에서 촬영한 것이다. 이벤트 사진작가로서 나는 수중과 육상 모두에서 팀을 촬영할 수 있었다. 이 사진에서 수영선수는 2024년 파리 올림픽 루틴 시범을 보이기 전에 수영장 바닥에 서서 호흡 운동을 하며 몸을 풀고 있다. 아티스틱 수영선수들은 놀라운 폐활량을 가지고 있으며 수영장 바닥에 서있는 것과 같은 특이한 묘기를 쉽게 수행할 수 있다."

12. The Moment. Runner-up, Behavior. "November-December at Magdalena Bay in Baja California are the best months to try and get good encounters with blue marlin. However, getting strong images of these fish in wild life is very difficult, because they attack the sardines and mackerels at very high speed, making it extremely difficult to capture this behavior in a photo." # © Eduardo Acevedo / UPY2025

순간. 야생동물 행동 부문 준 우승작. "바하 캘리포니아 막달레나灣의 11월~12월은 청새치와 좋은 만남을 가지기에 가장 좋은 달이다. 그러나 정어리와 고등어는 매우 빠른 속도로 공격하기 때문에 야생(자연)에서 이러한 물고기의 강한 이미지를 얻는 것은 매우 어렵고 이러한 행동을 사진에 담는 것은 매우 어렵다."

🐟대서양청새치(Makaira nigricans)는 대서양에 서식하는 청새치의 한 종이다. 이 종은 인도-태평양 청새치와 밀접한 관련이 있으며 일반적으로 같은 종으로 간주되며, 단순히 청새치라고 불린다.

13. Hydration. Winner, Portrait. "I had the idea of photographing the camels drinking water for about one and half a years. I wanted to photograph them drinking water from the underwater perspective, because I did not see any images showing this. The weather was critical, and it took me several weeks to get the best possible shots. The first week, the camels were a bit hesitant to drink water while my camera was under the water, and only few gathered to drink, which is not what I wanted. But after several days the camels had already accepted me and my equipment." # © Abdulaziz Al Saleh / UPY2025

수분 공급. 초상사진 부문 우승작. “약 1년 반 동안 낙타가 물을 마시는 모습을 찍겠다는 생각이 있었다. 수중에서 물을 마시는 모습을 촬영하고 싶었다. 왜냐하면 이를 보여주는 이미지를 보지 못했기 때문이다. 날씨가 매우 심각해서 최고의 사진을 찍는 데 몇 주가 걸렸다. 첫 주에 낙타들은 카메라가 물속에 있을 때 물을 마시는 것을 조금 망설였고, 물을 마시기 위해 모인 낙타는 거의 없었다. 하지만 며칠이 지난 후 낙타들은 이미 나와 내 장비를 받아들였다."

14. The Beauty of the Swamp. Winner, Compact. "I captured this image at one of my favorite locations within the Everglades ecosystem. Historically, I primarily dove in salt water, but I have become enamored by this foreboding environment, with clear waters, light filtering through cypress trees, and the fish species, both native and introduced. I have revisited this spot many times trying to capture various subjects and the light just right. The water levels vary significantly, sometimes completely drying, during different times of year. The fish species are in constant flux, and this location is often dominated by exotics. Ironically, on this occasion, I hadn't invested too much thought and I was enjoying the scenery when this Florida gar positioned itself perfectly in the frame of my GoPro." # © Bryant Turffs / UPY2025

늪의 아름다움. 컴팩트 부문 우승작. "나는 에버글레이즈 생태계에서 가장 좋아하는 장소 중 한 곳에서 이 사진을 찍었다. 역사적으로 나는 주로 바닷물에서 다이빙을 했지만, 맑은 물, 사이프러스나무를 통해 들어오는 빛, 토착종과 외래종 물고기 등 불길한 환경에 매료되었다. 다양한 피사체와 빛을 제대로 포착하기 위해 여러 번 이곳을 다시 방문했다. 일 년 중 물의 수위는 크게 달라지며 때로는 완전히 말라버리기도 한다. 어종은 끊임없이 유동하는 데다 이국적인 물고기들이 이곳을 지배하는 경우가 많다. 아이러니하게도 이번에는 너무 많은 생각을 투자하지 않았고, 플로리다동갈치가 고프로의 프레임에 완벽하게 자리 잡았을 때의 풍경을 즐기고 있었다."

🌴에버글레이즈 생태계는 남부 플로리다의 아열대 습지로, 톱풀 습지, 맹그로브 숲 및 기타 서식지를 포함한다. 미국 악어와 플로리다퓨마와 같은 멸종 위기에 처한 종을 포함하여 다양한 식물과 동물이 서식한다.

15. Face Off. Winner, Behavior. "This is a photo of two male Asian sheepshead wrasse fighting. The unique form of this species is characteristic of males, who form harems and claim territories during the breeding season. The one on the left in the photo is the harem king, who has defended his territory for more than 10 years and is estimated to be over 30 years old, while the one on the right is a young challenger." # © Shunsuke Nakano / UPY2025

페이스 오프(적대시하는 두 세력 사이의 대결을 의미). 동물 행동 부문 우승작. "이 사진은 두 마리의 수컷 혹돔이 싸우는 모습이다. 이 종의 독특한 형태는 번식기에 하렘을 형성하고 영역을 주장하는 수컷의 특징이다. 사진 왼쪽에 있는 것은 10년 이상 자신의 영역을 지켜온 하렘 왕으로 30년 이상 된 것으로 추정되며, 오른쪽에 있는 것은 어린 도전자이다."

16. Aurora Underwater. Category winner, Up & Coming, and Up & Coming Underwater Photographer of the Year 2025. "I first traveled to Cancun, Mexico, for a shoot two years ago, and since then, I’ve been captivated by its charm. These days, I find myself visiting Cancun frequently. From where I live, it’s a very long journey—about 24 hours by plane—but this place perfectly aligns with the direction of my photography and offers a variety of shooting opportunities. To capture this particular photo, I visited during the rainy summer season and worked with a local Korean guide as my model." # © Ruruka / UPY2025

수중 오로라. 업앤커밍 부문 우승작 및 2025년 올해의 업앤커밍 수중 사진작가 수상작. "2년 전 처음 촬영차 멕시코 칸쿤에 갔는데 그때부터 그 매력에 푹 빠졌다. 요즘 칸쿤을 자주 방문하고 있다. 내가 사는 곳에서는 비행기로 약 24시간 걸리는 매우 긴 여정이지만, 이곳은 나의 사진 방향과 완벽하게 일치하며 다양한 촬영 기회를 제공한다. 이 특정 사진을 찍기 위해 나는 비가 오는 여름철에 방문했고, 현지 한국인 가이드와 함께 모델로 일했다."
