**Mily Balakirev's Islamey** is a renowned piano composition subtitled "Oriental Fantasy," composed in 1869.[1]
Inspired by Balakirev's travels to the Caucasus, it draws on local folk melodies like the Lezginka dance and a Crimean Tatar love song.[2][1]
## Background
Balakirev, leader of the Russian nationalist "Mighty Five," wrote Islamey rapidly over one month, starting August 1869 in Moscow and finishing in Saint Petersburg.[1]
He dedicated it to pianist Nikolai Rubinstein, who premiered it in Moscow that December.[2]
Balakirev revised it in 1902, adding ossias for its extreme technical demands.[4][1]
## Structure
The piece unfolds in three sections: a fast opening Allegro agitato with the main Islamey theme, a lyrical Tranquillo middle with the Tatar melody, and a fiery Allegro vivo coda echoing a Russian Tropak.[1]
At about 8 minutes, it contrasts virtuosic passages with serene expressiveness.[3]
## Significance
Once deemed the world's hardest piano work, it influenced Ravel's Gaspard de la nuit, especially Scarbo.[1]
Modern performers like Boris Berezovsky and Valentina Lisitsa showcase it as a showpiece.[7][2]
Its melodies persist in regional folk traditions.[1]
