Dear brothers and sisters, good Sunday! Today the Gospel of the liturgy (Mk 10:46-52) tells us about Jesus who cures a man from blindness. His name is Bartimaeus, but the crowd in the street ignore him: he is a poor beggar. Those people do not have eyes for the blind man; they leave him, they ignore him. No caring gaze, no feeling of compassion. Bartimaeus does not see either, but he hears and he makes himself heard. He shouts, he cries loudly, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” (v. 48). Jesus, however, hears and sees him. He places himself at his disposal and asks, “What do you want me to do for you?” (v. 51).

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 복된 주일입니다. 오늘의 전례 복음 (마르코 복음 10,46-52) 은 우리에게 눈먼 사람을 고치시는 예수님에 대해 얘기합니다. 그의 이름은 바르티매오입니다. 그러나 거리의 군중은 그를 무시합니다. 그는 가난한 거지입니다. 그 사람들은 그 눈먼 사람을 보는 눈이 없습니다. 그들은 그를 놓아두고, 그를 무시합니다. 관심의 눈길도, 연민의 감정도 없습니다. 바르티매오도 그들을 보지 못하지만 그는 듣고 자기 목소리를 냅니다. 그는 소리 지르고 크게 외칩니다. “다윗의 자손이시여, 저에게 자비를 베풀어 주십시오.” (48절) 그러나 예수님께서는 그의 목소리를 들으시고 그를 보십니다. 그분은 자신을 그의 처분에 맡기시며 물으십니다. “내가 너에게 무엇을 해 주기를 바라느냐?” (51절)

“What do you want me to do for you?”. This question, before a blind person, seems to be a provocation, and instead, it is a test. Jesus is asking Bartimaeus who he is truly looking for, and for what reason. Who is for you the “Son of David”? And thus the Lord starts to open the blind man’s eyes. Let us consider three aspects of this encounter, which becomes a dialogue: the cry, faith, the journey.

“내가 너에게 무엇을 해주기를 바라느냐?” 이 질문은 눈먼 사람에게는 도발처럼 보이지만 사실은 시험입니다. 예수님께서 바르티매오에게 진정 누구를 찾고 있으며, 그 이유는 무엇인지 묻고 계십니다. 너에게 “다윗의 자손”은 누구이냐? 그렇게 주님께서 눈먼 사람의 눈을 열기 시작하십니다. 대화가 되는 이 만남의 세 측면을 생각합시다. 즉 부르짖음, 믿음, 여정입니다.

First of all, the cry of Bartimaeus, which is not only a request for help. It is an affirmation of himself. The blind man is saying, “I exist, look at me. I do not see you, Jesus. Do you see me?”. Yes, Jesus sees the beggar, and he listens to him, with the ears of the body and those of the heart. Think of ourselves, when we cross paths with a beggar on the street: how many times do we look away, how many times do we ignore him, as though he did not exist? And do we hear the cry of beggars?

첫 째 측면. 바르티매오의 외침은 도움의 요청뿐만 아니라 자신에 대한 긍정입니다. 눈먼 사람은 “저는 존재합니다. 저를 보십시오. 저는 당신을 보지 못합니다. 예수님, 당신은 저를 보십니까?”라고 말합니다. 그렇습니다. 예수님께서는 그 거지를 보십니다. 그리고 몸과 마음의 귀로 그의 말을 경청하십니다. 길에서 거지를 만날 때의 우리 자신을 생각합시다. 우리는 몇 번이나 그에게서 눈을 돌리고, 마치 그가 존재하지 않는 것처럼, 몇 번이나 그를 무시합니까? 그리고 우리는 거지의 외침을 듣습니까?

Second point: faith. What does Jesus say? “Go your way; your faith has made you well” (v. 52). Bartimaeus sees because he believes; Christ is the light of his eyes. The Lord observes how Bartimaeus looks at him. How do I look at a beggar? Do I ignore him? Do I look at him like Jesus does? Am I capable of understanding his demands, his cry for help? When you give alms, do you look the beggar in the eye? Do you touch his hand to feel his flesh?

두 째 측면, 믿음. 예수님께서 무엇을 말씀하십니까? “가거라. 네 믿음이 너를 구원하였다.” (52절) 바르티매오는 믿기 때문에 봅니다. 그리스도께서는 그의 눈의 빛입니다. 주님께서 바르티매오가 당신을 어떻게 보는지 관찰하십니다. 나는 거지를 어떻게 봅니까? 나는 그를 무시합니까? 나는 거지를 예수님께서 하시는 것처럼 봅니까? 나는 그의 요구를, 도움을 청하는 그의 외침을 이해할 수 있습니까? 당신이 자선을 베풀 때, 당신은 거지와 눈을 맞춥니까? 당신은 그의 몸을 느끼기 위해서 그의 손을 잡습니까?

Finally, the journey. Bartimaeus, healed, “followed him on the way” (v. 52). But each one of us is Bartimaeus, blind within, who follows Jesus once he has approached Him. When you approach a poor person and make your proximity felt, it is Jesus who approaches you in the person of that poor man. Please, let us not be confused: alms are not the same as handouts. The person who receives the most grace from almsgiving is the one who gives, because he makes himself seen by the eyes of the Lord.

마지막 측면, 여정. 치유 받은 바르티매오는 “예수님을 따라 길을 나섰습니다.” (52절) 하지만 우리 각자는 예수님께 다가간 후에 그분을 따르는 내적으로 눈먼 바르티매오입니다. 당신이 가난한 사람에게 다가가서 가까움을 느낄 때, 그분은 그 가난한 사람의 인격으로 당신에게 다가가신 예수님이십니다. 혼동하지 마시길 부탁합니다. 자선은 구호품과 같지 않습니다. 자선에서 가장 큰 은총을 받은 사람은 베푸는 사람입니다. 왜냐하면 그는 자신을 주님의 눈에 띄게 하기 때문입니다.

Let us pray together to Mary, the dawn of salvation, that she may guard our path in the light of Christ.

우리 모두 구원의 여명이신 성모 마리아께 그리스도의 빛 속으로 저희의 길을 지켜주시도록 기도합시다.
