People often use plausible excuses to cover up their faults. Sometimes even holy faith is used as a veil to cover up my greed. The assembly of Mizpah in Judges chapter 20 lays bare the ugly face of such hypocrisy. Criticism alone is rampant, while self-reflection has vanished. Princess! When the Israelites saw the dismembered body sent by Levi the man, they all gathered at Mizpah to prepare for war against Benjamin.
-
In this process, there was no serious questioning of God's will, and a sincere confession and investigation into the circumstances of the incident were omitted. A war to annihilate a single tribe began that way, driven by impulse. All Israel gathered after receiving the fragments of the body sent by the Levite. Of course, the tribe of Benjamin also received the body fragments, but they were not notified to come to the assembly; instead, they learned that the rest of Israel had gathered through other means. As many as 400,000 people gathered just to draw their swords.
-
This is the first time such a thing has happened in the Book of Judges. The Levite’s way of conveying the message was that shocking and bizarre, and the matter was serious. Those who did not move or stand before the LORD would not have existed; that was the Israel of that time. They never extended their field of vision to their neighbors, unless it was a stronger stimulus. How tragic is the situation, in which the entire Israel mentioned in chapter 1 for the war against Canaan is now uniting for a war against their own people, the Benjamites.
-
Levi recounts the whole story of the situation. However, they reinterpret events and edit memories entirely from a self-centered perspective. They focus solely on how unforgivable the evil deeds of the Gibea people are, while denying any fault of their own. They also exaggerate the actions of some bullies as a problem of the entire Gibeath people, or even the entire tribe of Benjamin. By not calling the tribe of Benjamin to this assembly, they are not even given the opportunity to object. It feels like a trial that was decided upon and everyone has already gathered.
-
It was certainly something deserving of punishment, but it had not escalated to the point of becoming a nationwide conflict. The Levite urged the people of Gibeath to devise a plan for the Israelites. He is convinced that he and his concubine are the victims, and the people of Gibea are the perpetrators. They claim that only they committed sexual immorality and depravity. But is that really the case? Does he deserve it? It means that readers must blindly believe that what he said is the whole truth, and everyone already knows that.
-
The more serious the situation, the more important it is to carefully ascertain the truth. This is because perspectives and responses can vary depending on one's standpoint. Above all, shouldn't they ask God? God is not present in this trial. Only the Levites pretend to believe in God. That is the biggest problem. Why did they gather at Misba? Why am I wronged every single day? Are we justifying our shameful faults with a sacred pretext? Why are we angry at the sins of others yet silent about our own faults? Is our anger, as a cry for justice, truly moving toward the truth, or is it another form of violence for self-justification?

Lord, who shines the dawn of salvation even in deep despair, where there is no God, there is no truth, only the logic of self-justification. Help me not to distort God’s will by asserting my own righteousness, and keep my salvation from fading away through sincere repentance and obedience.
