The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which oversees animal feed, said excluding high-risk materials from cattle 30 months of age or older from all animal feed will prevent any accidental cross-contamination between ruminant feed (intended for animals such as cattle) and non-ruminant feed or feed ingredients. 동물 사료 부분을 관장하고 있는 미국 식약청은, 30개월 이상된 소에서 나오는 극도로 위험한 광우병 물질을 다른 동물들과 차단하는것이라고 밝혔다. 이것은 소 등의 반추동물에게 실수로 소고기 등의 동물성 사료를 먹이는경우에 발생할수 있는 교차 감염까지 막기 위한 조치이다. The new rule takes effect in April, 2009. 이 법은 내년 4월에 발효가 될 예정이다. Contamination could occur during manufacture, transport or through the accidental misfeeding of non-ruminant feed to ruminant animals. 교차 감염은 사료를 제작하는 과정이나, 또는 운송 할때 발생할수도 있고, 또한 의도하지 않은 실수로 소먹이를 다른 동물의 먹이로 먹일때 발생할수도 있다. Canada and the United States banned the inclusion of protein from cows and other ruminant animals such as goats and sheep in cattle feed in 1997, following a mad cow outbreak in Britain. 캐나다와 미국은 소고기의 단백질을 사료에 넣는것을 금지 했을 뿐만이 아니라, 소와 비슷한 반추동물인 염소, 양의 고기도 이미 영국의 광우병 파동이 일어나던 1997년에 금지 시킨바 있다. The measure issued today finalizes a proposed rule opened for public comment in October 2005. Mad cow disease is a fatal, brain-wasting disease believed to be spread by contaminated feed. People can contract a human version of the disease, know as Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, or vCJD, which scientists believe can be spread by eating contaminated parts from an infected animal. 광우병은 매우 치명적이고 뇌를 망가뜨리는 질병으로, 광우병 물질로 더럽혀진 음식을 통해 전달되는것으로 알려져있다. 이와 같은 질병은 이미 인간에게도 비슷한 예가 있는데, 크로이츠 야곱병과 광우병에 걸린 고기의 섭취를 통해 이뤄진다고 여겨지는 변형 크로이츠 야곱병이 대표적이다. U.S. official have been slowly working to resume beef shipments. 미국 내에서는 3번의 광우병 환자가 발생했으며, 03년 12월 에 처음 발견되었다. 그후 미국의 고기 수출이 사실상 중지되었다. 미국 당국은 쇠고기 수출을 다시 재개하기위해 서서히 관련작업을 진행중이다 Last week, South Korea officially announced it would gradually open its market to U.S. beef imports as Washington intensifies safety standards. 지난주 대한민국은 공식적으로 이렇게 위험하고 치명적인 미국의 쇠고기를 수입하기로 했다. 이는 미국 대통령이 직접 미국 쇠고기의 안전 기준을 강화시킨다고 약속했기 때문이라고 한다.
