Ganggangsulae (Korean traditional circle dance play)

There are many arguments on the origin of 'Ganggangsulae'. One of them is what Admiral Lee Sun-Sin ever planned a strategy against Japanese raiders to let wives dressed up like men play dances grabbing hands in hands in a ring to exaggerate the number of military and finally frightened Japanese raiders ran away. Anyway, it might be said that 'Ganggangsulae' began from a grand alliance festival since long time ago and it has been developed in a way of communal 'Gut (exorcism)' through which, in bright moonlight nights, wives pray for plentiful harvest and return with full load of fish of their husbands who go fishing for a long period when we see 'Ganggangsulae' is spreaded mainly in the coastal areas.

강강술래의 유래에 대해서는 여러 가지 설이 많다. 그중 하나는 이순신(李舜臣) 장군이 침략해 오는 왜적에게 우리 군사가 많은 것처럼 꾸미기 위해서, 부녀자들을 동원하여 남장시키고 손과 손을 마주잡고 둥그렇게 원을 만들며 춤추게 했더니, 이를 본 왜군들이 질겁하여 달아났다는 이야기가 있다. 다만 강강술래가 먼 옛날부터 집단의 대동적인 축제에서 시작된 것으로, 주로 분포지역이 해안지방인 점에서 주로 남자들은 오랫동안 고기를 잡으러 나가고, 여성들이 마을에 남아 있으면서 달 밝은 밤이면 풍농(豊農)과 만선(滿船)을 기원하는 공동굿 형식으로 발달되어 왔다고 할 수 있겠다.
