3. “The whole nine yards” Example: M:       The car is really stuck in this mud. W:       We’ve been pushing this car for the last 30 minutes.   It’s raining, I’m wet, dirty, tired and running out of patience. M:        Well, we just can’t give up now. Let’s give it one last effort and if      it’s still stuck then we’ll call a tow truck. W:       Let push this car out of the mud and go home.  Okay, this time,       let’s give it the whole nine yards. Definition:     Giving complete effort.  To holding nothing back.  Explanation:       In the army when the gunners in the barrack are firing the         mounted machine guns at the approaching enemy, the         strand of bullets were 9 yards long.   To give the whole         none yards meant to fire the mounted machine gun until         the bullets ran out.  The idea is to give it your best and         complete effort if not the enemy would get you and kill         you.
