First of all, what is the 'sacredness'? Let's start from here.
What is the sacredness?
We have said like this.
Human beings have religious desire.
We have religious orientation.
I have told this last class repeatedly.
The premise was that human beings have religiosity to some extent, or that we study it by experience. But if we recognize that we live in a variable and limited situation, and that we long for something beyond the variable and limited things, we say that they orient and long for the sacredness.
Beyond the variable and limited circumstances of our own, in other words, transcending human circumstances…
We are imperfect. My speech is always imperfect.
We are ashamed of it, sometimes
Didn't you have such feelings?
Let's presume that you just play with your friends talking about many things and then you go back home. When you call back what you talked at day time lying down on your bed at night time, you may feel ashamed of what you talked. Did you not have such an occasion?
I did have.
I live a life full of regrets.
We are not stable people, just as I have said before that we carved on rocks because we are incomplete and unstable.
We are nor perfect.
Things are not done as I want.
So we long for an existence that transcends our reality, desire to make contact with perfect existence, or want to be identical to a complete and transcendent existence, and desire to imitate them.
We recognize objects through our sensual experiences but our sensual experiences are not perfect.
Our sensual experiences are not perfect at all.
Therefore, ‘Although I am looking at him, I doubt if he is really there.’
‘Although I am looking at him, I doubt if he is really there.’
Have you seen the movie ‘Matrix'?
In the movie "Matrix", this world we experience with our senses is all fake.
It's connected to a computer and the computer manipulate us. It manipulates our senses and makes us think that we taste something or see something.
All the things that we see, touch and feel are not perfect. Our sensual experiences are not perfect
However, we are making efforts to understand or identify the real meaning of the perfect existence beyond our sensual experiences.
Sometimes, we try to be an existence to transcend the limit of human beings.
How many people have made efforts to be enlightened and how many people wanted to live forever.
Right?
There were many people in the history who tried to have perennial youth and long life and who wanted to do something with divine gift from god.
Although human beings live in this unstable and variable world…
Right?
We live in variable world but we want and long for perfect, unchanging and stable something.
Whether it is a object, existence, meaning, property or status which people are longing for or orient to, we call the object 'sacredness'.
Status which is distinguished from this situation.
Existence who is differentiated from the situation of human beings.
We say that we live in this meaninglessness. We are looking for real meaningfulness rather than meaninglessness.
What we say cannot be truth.
Do you think what I am speaking is truth?
Is what I say unchanging?
Is it always true?
If I say I love you today and quarrel with you tomorrow, is what I said yesterday true?
We are pursuing something unchanging and true and pursuing meaning. The objects, the existence that we think such, such status and meaning are integrated and it becomes sacredness.
I speak a little too fast. To summarize it, the object that people adore and long for no matter what it is, if it is an existence or meaning, it is the very sacredness, if people recognize the variable and limited situation and desire something beyond such variable, limited and imperfect world.
If we study focusing on how humans perceive and maintain the sacredness, it will greatly help us to understand humans.
Human beings are imperfect. Therefore we pursue the perfect thing.
We find the same thing in the stories that people followed a special old monk to find meaning when they heard that the monk had stayed under a big spiritual tree. It is the same context.
Let's see it more closely.
Eliade has explained the sacredness in two ways. First what is it ultimately?
He said that it is something that are not human beings, something transcending the limit of individual and something lying beyond human beings.
That is what I said just now.
At the same time, the second is that people want to imitate when they recognize the sacredness.
Therefore the sacredness becomes a model.
Buddhists, of course, want to live a like Buddha.
Right?
Hanging lanterns on Buddha's birthday.
They hang lanterns to light the world with the mercy of Buddha.
It is to follow Buddha.
It is something like following the model.
In the region of Southern Buddhism, monks are very rich. Even though they have money in the temple, they always beg around once or twice a day.
The beg around the town.
To get food and to be served.
They beg around and get food and gifts. If we ask 'Why do you do that,' they answer that because it is done by Buddha.
Because Buddha did it in the past.
There are important things that Christians repeat constantly regardless of protestants or Catholic.
It is baptism and the holy communion or the Eucharist.
Why are they doing these.
Because Jesus Christ did in the bible.
That is a model.
Sacredness is called classic in that it presents a model that people who orient to sacredness desire and imitate.
It is summarized by Eliade in the book 'Myth, Dream and Mystery'.
Let's take a look at how Eliade explained the sacredness although it seems incoherent.
He explained it in the book ‘Morphology of religion' and 'Myth, Dream and Mystery'.
It is not a definition.
It means not secular, in a word.
What is not secular means that it is differentiated from others, is opposite from ordinary human life or everyday lives of people.
To put it another way, sacredness is not the ordinary life. We have talked that the status we live is not perfect. What did I say? Is it perfect or not?
I told you it is recognized imperfect, didn't I?
Perfection which is opposite of ordinary life which is imperfect is experienced as sacredness.
In 'Myth, Dream and Mystery',
Other things than human beings.
When we say other things than human beings, it does not mean animals. It means what can be differentiated from human world or what transcends limit.
Something transcending limit of individuals.
To explain it using pedantic expressions, it is area where people live in different way from the way we live now.
It is the area of other ontology.
It is opposite of secular.
It is distinguished from secular qualitatively.
elide explained that such things are sacred.
I have said before.
I used the expression of Classic. Here I change little bit.
I changed it a model.
It plays the role of a model.
Although individuals live their lives, it presents a model that community members should orient and pursue.
To Buddhists, Buddha presented a model and to Christians, Jesus Christ did.
Figures in a myth can present a model.
This concept is not unique to American Indians only. Indians thought soma, a psychotropic beverage sacred.
This will be discussed again when we study a myth.
Target that we follow.
Thus it becomes a model that we can follow.
Although they are individuals, it becomes a model that those individuals, at least community members sharing the same sense of universe can follow its general value and common things.
I have told it before, in the beginning part.
What is the contents that human beings experience as sacred?
‘First, it should be different. It should be perfect.’ I told you like this.
Do you remember?
It must be perfect.
In that way, it can be experienced as sacred more easily.
It should deserve awe and reverence.
If it is ‘a nothing or humble.’ nobody will visit it.
Extraordinary, new and unknown thing can bring awe.
In the film ‘Bush Man’, they first saw Coca Cola bottle which an European threw away from his plane. They lived in Africa primitively and that was the first time to see the bottle. They were curious what it is.
They saw it for the first time.
They could not touch it.
They could not make it and it was the first time for them to see it.
It was dropped from the sky where they thought god lived.
It is sacred.
It does not belong to human beings.
It is differentiated from human things.
They need explanations.
‘If it belongs to god and if it is treasure of god, why god has thrown it away?.’ They need this kind of explanation.
Here a myth is born.
It should be new.
It should be strange.
It should be unusual.
Such things can be more easily experienced as sacred.
What are extraordinary, magnificent and marvelous.
Eliade summarized major characteristics or repetitively shown characteristics of objects that are experienced as sacred like the followings in ‘Morphology of Religion’.
When we say all the things which has meaning and can be differentiated from ordinary life, it can be a small stone according to experiences of people.
Let's presume that I slept under a tree and I met god under the tree.
Then the tree can be experienced as sacred.
Let's continue seeing examples.
There was a plain tree, an loeaster. Under this tree, Sakyamuni found enlightenment.
He became Buddha.
Then the loeaster becomes a symbol of Sakyamuni.
It happens because of an event in a myth.
It can happen because of an event in a myth.
I told you that all the things which have meaning and can be differentiated from everyday life can be experienced as sacred.
It is the conclusion.
All the things have potentiality to be experienced sacred.
This is the conclusion.
All the things are potentially sacred. Of course what are magnificent, extraordinary, new and marvelous can be experienced sacred more easily.
When we study the concept of sacredness defined by Elidade, especially in the lecture, there are some parts that can be easily confused.
Many people think of God in Christianity who created heaven and earth when we say sacred.
Many students think of the supremacy.
But it is not correct.
It includes very wide range of objects.
Of course it includes supremacy, too.
It includes the perfect existence.
When we talk about the weakness of human beings, what do we mention first?
We do not know future.
But there is an existence who knows future.
That can be sacred.
He/she does not need to be perfect in all aspects.
Human beings are mortal. They will die sometime.
There is an immortal existence.
It can be sacred.
Because of a certain feature, a small feature, it can be sacred.
There is unknown power that I do not know.
It can be experienced as sacred.
The scope is very wide.
Lokota Indians belong to Sioux people. They are very aggressive and governed the Great plains.
They were forced out by the White.
You know, how Americans drove out Indians, American Indians and oppressed them.
Lakota tribe has a concept of wakan. Wakan means 'divine' or 'sacred'.
For example, 'wakan tanka' means the highest god.
wakan tanka.
If wakan is used as prefix, it means it is sacred. It is an adjective,
Then there is a tribal leader, a famous leader. He is wakan.
He has power that ordinary people do not have.
They call alcohol wakan han, meaning sacred water, liquid.
Why?
When we drink, we can see something that we used not able to see.
Nothing to be feared.
Become brave, right?
When we are drunken, we can see something that we could not see when we were sober.
If we drink before fighting, we can have bravery, courage.
This concept is not unique to American Indians only. Indians thought soma, a psychotropic beverage sacred.
It is wakan, too.
There is a cactus named Peyote. It evokes hallucination. They thought that they could meet god if they smoke it. Therefore, it is wakan, too.
Later times, they called the White wakan.
It is because they are always defeated by the White even though they fight after praying.
They could not win.
The White whom they could not defeat no matter how they made efforts, those who were differentiated from them came.
So they called the White wakan.
In Japan, there is a word 'kami'.
Have you heard of Kamikaze?
They used the phrase divine wind. People usually think kami is god but it does not simply mean a god. Kami includes all the things which have sacred power no matter what it is.
kami can be a god but it can be a strange power or an existence who has kami. The concept of kami in Japanese religion is linked with the concept of sacredness.
I looked up an encyclopedia to find the definition of ghost.
Pascal encyclopedia. Although it is not often used these days, it was the most popular encyclopedia in the past.
In the encyclopedia, it is defined like this.
It is superhuman. In another word, it is beyond humanity.
Supernatural, beyond the principles of the nature.
It includes all the objects that are believed to have supernatural power.
Therefore, if ghosts have ability to be differentiated from human beings, can see what humans cannot, and have some characteristics, properties and capabilities that mortal human beings do not have who are changing and dying in the flow of time, we can think them sacred.
All sacred beings are not friendly or give love to human beings.
Some sacred beings should be evaded.
Right?
If you think sacredness is not only the supremacy transcending human beings in Christianity but also includes wider concepts, you have already learned and summarized much about the concept of sacredness.
wakan tanka.
