Special Codes for Dogs in the Cabin
It is getting easier to see dogs in the cabin than ever, and I found myself confused with some SHR codes for those who travelling with dogs and the differences among them. I believe so
me of crew, maybe a lot, might have the same trouble that I have.
Are you able to tell the difference between SVAN and ESAN? I can tell the difference of the full name of them, but I do not know how they are exactly different or how to distinguish one from the other.
SVAN is the SHR code for a service animal. A service animal is limited to a dog that is trained to perform tasks for an individual with a disability, including a physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disability. Tasks performed by a service animal can be the following: pulling a wheelchair, retrieving dropped items, alerting a person to a sound, reminding a person to take medication, or pressing an elevator button. There are no size limit and no need of cage in the cabin, but they have to stay at their handler’s feet with a harness or a leash. Surprisingly, there are also differences in these service animals. While some of them like Seeing Eye Dog, Hearing Dog, or Physical Service Dog can be flown with their handlers on every flight which Asiana airlines operates,
others can be flown in the cabin on U.S.A flights only. So I don’t want you to be surprised if you find the SVAN code on any other non-U.S.A flights.
ESAN, on the other hand, is the code for an emotional support animal. These emotional support animals are not considered as service animals. They provide companionship, relieve loneliness, and sometimes help with depression, anxiety, and certain phobias, but do not have special training to work to assist people with disabilities. As their work is not directly related to the individual’s disability, the airline regulation for them is mostly the same as pets’. But they can stay out of cages as long as they are wearing a harness or a leash, and are allowed on U.S.A flights only.
I did my utmost to deliver this information about SVAN and ESAN as simple as possible. Nevertheless, it can be something quite tricky and confusing when you encounter these codes on the passenger list. Once you finish reading this article, I want you to look up the recent notices about our company’s regulations of SVAN and ESAN for your further flights.
