▣Top Nine(上九,상구) : Arrogant Dragon Has Regret(亢龍有悔, 항룡유회)
[Explanation]
In Top Nine(上九,상구), an aging or oner-ascended dragon flies too high,
leading to regret.
[Commentary]
Con fucius annotates the line text written by the Duke of Zhou("The arrogant dragon
has regret"[亢龍有悔, 항룡유회]) as follows :
"When something is completely filled, it cannot last long[盈不可久也,영불가구야]."
"When pushed to extremes, disaster arises[窮之災也,궁지재야]."
"It becomes a position where time and circumstances reach their ultimate limit
[與時偕極,여시해극] , resulting in great hardship."
If the character 'Hang(亢,항 - Arrogant / Extreme) is visualized as the image of wearing
a formal hat over a headscarf(over-dressing or taking on excessive status) :
It can be seen s an old, aging dragon forgetting its current position,
relying solely on its youthful spirit, forcing its way in and out, and ultimately facing regret.
Samsan(三山,삼산) states that this state is "a product of greed."
Dasan(Chong Yak-yong, 茶山,다산) explains that while 'Jeong'(貞,정 - Constancy) remains unchanging, 'Hoe(悔,회 - Regret) represents change.
Thus, he viewed the Arrogant Dragon(亢龍,항용) as acting pretentiously and arrogantly,
bringing about disaster, reaching an irreversible extreme,
and ultimately suffering unavoidable regret.
In the Wenyan Zhuan(Commentary on the Words of the Text), when asked,
"What does 'Hanglong Youhui'(The soaring dragon has regrets) mean?",
Confucius responds with a lament :
"Although the dragon that has flown beyond reachable heights is noble,
it has lost its proper position(Guoer Wuwei), and though it holds a high status,
it has lostthe hearts of the people(Gao′er Wumin).
How could it achieve its pyrpose?"
"Since it cannoteven receive guidance from wise men(Xianren Zai Xiawei Er Wubu),
this is a position where whatever one does will only leave regret(Shiyi Dong Er Youhui Ye)."
This sets a clear limit on roles such as Retired King, Royal Preceptor, National Master,
Advisor, Elder, and Counselor associated with the Top Nine position.
When Su Dongpo asked, "Is there no way to eliminate the regret of [Top Nine]?",
Ah-ni replied, "There is ceryainly a way to prevent regret."
As if proving this, Ji-uk provided a clear answer :
"'Hang'(soaring / exceeding) falls into distress because it fails to read the current times,
while 'Hui'(regret) occurs because the tendency toward 'Hang'becomes excessive.
However, simply understanding the mindset of Emperors Yao and Shun― who kept
the realm in mind without over-interfering―Will cause all regret to vanish."
Based on this logic, were not King Sejo and King Yeonsangun of the Joseon Dynasty,
as well as Rhee Syngman, Park Chung-hee, Chun Doo-hwan, Roh Tae-woo, Roh-Moo-hyun,
Park Geun-hye, and even Lee Myung-bak, all rulers who failed to understand
the path of 'Hang;(Hang-do)?
Finally, seeing the Qian hexagram(Geongwae) transition into the Guai hexagram(Kwaegwae),
Confucius reched his conclusion on 'Hang'(亢,항 - excessive / soaring) :
''Hang' means being overly high(Hang Ji Wei Yan Ye).
He knows only how to advance, but not how to retreat(Zhi Jin Er Bu Zhi Tui) ;
He knows only how to earn money, but fails to realize he could go bankrupt
(Zhi De Er Bu Zhi Sang).
How could such a person ever be called a sage(Qi Wei Sheng Ren Hu)? !
If there is someone who knows advancing and retreating, gaining and losing,
and never strays from the peoper path(Zhi Jin Tui Cun Wang Er Bu Shi Qi Zheng Zhe),
he indeed deserves to be called a sage(Qi Wei Sheng Ren Hu)!"
If you can conduct yourself in this manner, you are a sage, a saint, and a Buddha.
Is this perhaps where the phrase "Inner Sage, Outer King"(Naeseong Waewang) originated?
The Study of the Sage(Seonghak) and the Study for Oneself(Wigi-ji-hak) are different.
The line, "The author of the Book of Changes understood the anxieties and troubles
of The world"(Zuo Yi Zhe Qi Zhi You Huan Ya!), strikes deeply at the heart.
I am reminded of a past ruler who lost favor with the public and drew sour glares after
shifting the blame for his own misdeeds onto his spouse("the person at home").
Being a king is truly not a position just anyone can hold.
In the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, there is a scene where King Seonjo studies
the Qian hexagram(Geongwae) during the royal lecture(Jugang).
The King asked : " Iunderstand the meaning of 'clouds follow the dragon,'
but what does 'wind follows the tiger' mean?"
Jeong Gyeong-se answered : "When a dragon roars, the wind blows fiercely,
and whrn a tiger walks, wind arises naturally.
This means that 'birds of a feather flock together'(Tongsheng Xiangying, Tongqi Xiangqiu)."
The King continued : "When a sage arises, all creation looks up to him'
(Shengren Er Wanwn Guan).
There is no human being who does not look up to him.
Petty men stay close with petty men, and noble men stay close with noble men."
Jeong Gyeong-se replied : "That is precisely the case The saying "A crane cries
in the deep woods, and its chick responds′ shares the exact same meaning.
Gaoyao under Emperor Yao, Yi YIn under King Tang, Wei Zheng of the Tang Dynasty,
and Zhuge Liang of the Han Dynasty all fall into this category."
Furthermore, when the King stated : 'Hanglong Youhui'(The soaring dragon has regrets)
means that in all matters, balance(Zhong) is deemed precious,
so going to excess will inevitably end in regret,"
Shin Sik responede : "Your Majesty′s sacred instruction is entirely correct."
