본격적인 전도회가 시작되기 전 안식일오후엔 어린이들에게 면류관을 씌우고 모든 교인들과 선교팀이 함께 동네를 돌며 행진을 했는데요, 이 행사로 인해 놀라운 홍보효과를 보게 되었습니다. 주민들의 반응이 대박이었고, 자발적으로 전도지를 받아가는 사람들도 많이 있었습니다.
일요일부터 의료봉사와 어린이 프로그램이 진행되었고, 장년 전도회느 월요일부터 시작 되었습니다. 의료봉사에는 한방과 양방을 함께 진행했는데 특히 한방을 처음 접해본 환자들은 굉장히 좋은 반응을 보였습니다. 그리고 가지고 오신 1000여개의 안경들이 다 소비가 되었습니다. 사실 갑자기 준비된 터라 사람들이 이렇게 많이 올거라 기대하지 못했는데 첫날부터 많은 사람들이 와서 줄을 섰고, 어쩔수 없이 돌려보내야 하는 아쉬운 장면도 있었습니다. 물론 3천명분을 위해 준비해야 하는 콩고와는 비교도 되지 않는 숫자지만 외부 손님들이 와서 하는 처음하는 행사에 이 정도 숫자는 놀라운 것이었습니다. 아니 숫자보다 사람들의 반응 때문에 사실 잔치는 흥겨웠던 것 같습니다.
도로 가에 있는 교회라 주차할 장소가 마땅치 않았고, 덕분에 교회 주변 도로가 정체가 일어나기도 했는데, 교회 마당에 먼저 온 사람들이 앉아서 기다리는 동안 경찰들이 와서 주변의 교통정리를 하는 진풍경도 벌어졌습니다.
어린이와 장년 전도회에도 처음에 80여명에서 시작하여 갈수록 많아지더니 120명을 훌쩍 넘겼습니다. 그리고 무엇보다 주목할 것은 교인들보다 구도자들의 숫자가 훨씬 많았다는 것입니다. 그 중에 매일 하얀 유니폼을 입고 와서 봉사를 도와주는 사람들이 있었는데요, 이 사람들은 첫날 선교팀이 나누어 준 음식 패키지를 받은 100 가정에 속하는 그룹입니다. 이들은 교회가 평소에 도와주던 사람들이었는데 매우 감사하다며 일주일 내내 와서 교회청소도 하고 사람들 질서도 잡아주는 등 자발적으로 봉사를 했습니다.

이 곳은 아프리카보다는 형편이 낫지만 가난한 사람들이 매우 많은 지역인데요, 특별히 이번에 봉사를 하게 된 마타쿨리아 지역은 그 중에도 극빈층이 밀집해 있는 지역입니다. 그래서 그런지 무언가 나눠주는 것이 거부감없이 잘 통했습니다. 그리고 어린이 프로그램에서는 생전 처음 받아보는 신기한 선물들 때문에 아이들이 행복해 했고, 신나는 한국말 찬양들에 분위기가 들떴습니다. 나중에 한국노래들을 흥얼거리는데 비교적 정확하게 부르는 것이 정말 신기했습니다.

바쁜 중에도 한국 요리교실을 두 번 정도 했는데 사람들이 너무 좋아했습니다. 나중에 문화센터를 차려야 겠다는 생각이 들었습니다.

마지막 저녁 예배 시간인 금요일 저녁에 있었던 일들을 말하지 않을 수가 없겠는데요.
전도회 강사이신 윤영화 목사님께서 예수 그리스도를 개인의 구주로 받아 들이고 침례를 받기 원하는 사람들은 앞으로 나오라고 호소를 하시자 목요일 저녁에도 나왔던 여인이 앞으로 나왔습니다. 분명히 자기의 의지로 나오는 것을 봤는데 앞에 나와서 서 있는 동안 귀신이 들렸습니다. 그리고 모든 목사님들과 교회 장로님들이 기도하기 시작했습니다. 청중들은 아무도 가지 않고 지켜 보고 있었는데요, 나중에 너무 시간이 오래 될 것 같아 방을 옮겨서 계속 기도했습니다. 너무나 가녀린 여인이었는데 어디서 그리 센 힘이 나오는지 감당하기가 힘들 정도였습니다. 강력하게 예수님의 이름으로 나오라고 외치자 잠시 정상으로 눈빛이 돌아오는 듯 하다가 다시 귀신이 들기를 여러 번 반복한 끝에 약 2시간 정도 후에 완전히 정상으로 돌아와서 아기에게 젖을 먹이는 것입니다. 참으로 영적파워의 필요성을 느끼는 순간이었습니다. 결국 이 여인은 침례를 받지는 못했으나 하나님의 뜻대로 살아가기를 진심으로 기도했습니다.

이 모든 수고끝에 2명의 귀한 영혼들이 거듭났으며 많은 구도자들이 생겼습니다. 스펜서빌 교회에서는 새로 침례받은 사람들과 구도자들에 대한 후속 활동을 휘해서도 귀한 후원금을 남겨주고 가셨습니다.

전도회가사도행전을 몇 장 남겨두고 끝났습니다. 대원들이 돌아간 후에도 저희와 이목사님 가정은 끝까지 묵상을 하고 단톡에 인증을 하며 사도행전 읽기를 마쳤습니다. 그리고 스리랑카에서 일어난 사도행전 29장의 일들을 회상하며 다시 한 번 하나님께 무릎을 꿇습니다.

Before the Main Evangelistic Meetings Began

On Sabbath afternoon, before the evangelistic meetings officially started, we placed crowns on the children’s heads and marched through the town with all the church members and the mission team. This event turned out to be an unexpectedly powerful form of publicity. The response from the local residents was incredible—many people voluntarily took evangelistic tracts, showing great interest in what we were doing.

Starting on Sunday, medical services and children’s programs were held, and the adult evangelistic meetings began on Monday. The medical service included both Western and traditional herbal medicine, and those experiencing herbal treatments for the first time responded very positively. The 1,000 pairs of eyeglasses that the mission team had brought were all distributed. In fact, because this trip was arranged so suddenly, we did not expect such a large turnout. However, from the very first day, people lined up in great numbers, and unfortunately, some had to be turned away due to the overwhelming demand. While the numbers were nowhere near the 3,000-person preparation required for Congo, it was still surprising to see so many people participate in this first-ever event hosted by an overseas mission team. More than the numbers, it was the people’s enthusiastic response that made the event feel like a joyful celebration.

Since the church is located along the main road and lacks parking space, traffic congestion built up around the area. In a remarkable scene, police officers arrived and started directing traffic while those who arrived early sat in the churchyard waiting for the event to begin.

Both the children’s and adult evangelistic meetings started with around 80 attendees and continued to grow, eventually exceeding 120 participants. What was most remarkable was that the number of seekers far outnumbered the church members. Among them were some individuals dressed in white uniforms, who voluntarily helped maintain order at the meetings. These individuals were part of the 100 families who had received food packages from the mission team on the first day. They had already been recipients of the church’s support, and out of gratitude, they came every day to clean the church, organize the crowd, and assist in various ways.

A Community in Need of Hope

Compared to Africa, Sri Lanka is relatively better off, but this region still has many impoverished families. In particular, Mattakkuliya, where we served, is one of the poorest urban areas in Colombo. Perhaps this is why people were so receptive to the gifts and assistance provided. The children’s program was especially heartwarming—many of the children had never received such gifts before, and their excitement was evident. They also had great fun learning joyful Korean praise songs, and later, we were amazed to hear them singing the songs quite accurately!

Despite the tight schedule, we managed to hold two Korean cooking classes, which were a huge success. This experience made me seriously consider the idea of establishing a cultural center in the future.

A Spiritual Battle on Friday Night

There is one story from Friday night’s closing service that I must share.

At the final meeting, Pastor Yoon Young-hwa made an appeal, inviting those who wished to accept Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and be baptized to come forward. Among those who responded was a woman who had also come forward on Thursday night. I had seen her come of her own free will, but as soon as she stood at the front, she was suddenly possessed by an evil spirit.

Immediately, all the pastors and church elders began to pray over her. The congregation remained in their seats, quietly watching. When it became clear that the prayer session would take a long time, we moved her to another room and continued to pray. She was a very frail-looking woman, but the supernatural strength she exhibited was overwhelming. As we forcefully commanded the evil spirit to leave in the name of Jesus, she would briefly regain clarity in her eyes, only for the possession to return again. This battle went on for nearly two hours until she finally regained full consciousness and sat down to nurse her baby. It was a moment that made us all deeply aware of the need for spiritual power.

In the end, she was unable to be baptized that night, but we sincerely prayed that she would live according to God’s will.

The Acts of the Apostles Continue

At the conclusion of this evangelistic effort, two precious souls were baptized, and many more seekers came forward, expressing interest in continuing their journey of faith. The Spencerville Church left behind a generous donation to support follow-up activities for the new members and seekers.

The evangelistic meeting ended while we were still reading the final chapters of the Book of Acts. Even after the mission team returned home, Pastor Lee’s family and ours continued our study, posting updates in our group chat until we finished the book.

As we reflect on what happened here in Sri Lanka, we can truly say that Acts 29 is still being written. Once again, we kneel before God in gratitude. The Acts of the Apostles continue!
