1984 - Michael undergoes reconstructive scalp surgery at Brotman Memorial Hospital. Plastic surgeon, Dr. Steven Hoefflin, performs revolutionary laser surgery on Michael to repair damage he suffered to his scalp during the filming of a Pepsi commercial in January. After the surgery, Hoefflin makes a statement in Michael's behalf: "Michael is doing fine. We were able to cover the area using his own hair, he did not need any implants or transplants. He really needs to rest, and this will provide him with that opportunity. He jumps back very rapidly, but we would like him to stay here several days. This has been quite traumatic, physically and emotionally for him. The operation was very important to him to have a full head of hair without the necessity of wigs or other hair coverings. He wanted to get it over with." Michael received over 5,000 telephone calls from his fans wishing him well.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"... none of these stories are true, they are totally fabricated, and it’s very sad, it’s very, very painful. And I pray a lot and er, that’s how I deal with it and I’m a strong person, I’m a warrior. And I know what’s inside of me. I’m a fighter. But it’s very painful. At the end of the day, I’m human, you know, I’m still a human being. So it does hurt very, very, very much."
