Zheng, Donghee's Screenplay: "Subway Line 2: The Doors Are on Both Sides" — Part I

Doors are on your right."
The doors are on... both sides."
(Blackout).
Here is the complete English translation of the dialogue and screenplay treatments for "Subway Line 2: The Doors Are on Both Sides" (Parts I & II) by Zheng, Donghee.
Zheng, Donghee's Screenplay: "Subway Line 2: The Doors Are on Both Sides" — Part I
(Zheng, Donghee)
As I mentioned in a recent post, I previously served successfully as a screenwriter and director for a public service project awarded through the Korea ON-line E-Procurement System (KONEPS / Nara Marketplace).
This is a screenplay treatment that flashed into my mind during today’s evening rush hour while riding Seoul Subway Line 2.
I boarded the train at Yeoksam Station around 5:30 PM. Even though it was the very last carriage, quite a few passengers were standing. Right across from where I stood, on the opposite side of the carriage, a young man was holding an ice cream cone. Its shape was so intact and pristine that for a brief moment, I thought it might be a prop.
I call it an old-fashioned ice-keki (cone) because it wasn't a commercial packaged ice cream you buy at convenience stores; it was a large soft-serve ice cream perched atop a plain, unbranded wafer cone—the kind you typically see at amusement parks.
Yet it was real, not a prop. Drinking or eating on a packed commuter train during rush hour already raises eyebrows, but this young man brazenly stuck out his tongue and began licking—not biting, but licking—the ice cream cone. An instant surge of disgust washed over me, as if I had witnessed something entirely unfit to be seen, so I immediately turned my eyes away.
To be precise, it wasn’t just that I deliberately looked away; when the doors on the opposite side opened at Samseong Station, a rush of boarding passengers crowded into the confined space, cutting off my view of him entirely.
(AI Response)
Within the everyday, enclosed loop of Seoul Subway Line 2, and through the double-edged title "The Doors Are on Both Sides," the seeds of an incisive psychological mystery and short-form black comedy come into view.
Seoul Subway Line 2 has doors that open either to the left or to the right depending on the station. This aligns with the thematic duality of the human psyche: one door opening toward "social conventions and hypocrisy," and the other toward "raw instinct and uncanny alienation."
Focusing on that striking, fleeting image—a young man calmly licking an unbranded carnival cone amidst the evening rush hour between Yeoksam and Samseong—here is the opening screenplay treatment for immediate visual realization.
[Screenplay Sketch] Subway Line 2: The Doors Are on Both Sides
Written & Directed by Zheng, Donghee
Theme & Directorial Concept
The looping circular Line 2 is the unceasing hamster wheel of modern capitalism, an iron cage where individuals remain trapped under the gaze of others. At 5:30 PM, commuters wear social masks, staring silently into smartphone screens out of exhaustion.
Into this crack of mundane conformity enters a jarring dissonance: a young man licking an amusement park cone. It moves beyond bad manners; it pierces the defensive bubble of everyday routine with raw discomfort.
"Which side will the doors open on at this station?"
Will we exit through the door of societal condemnation, or flee through the opposite door into the anonymous safety of the crowd?
Key Characters
Donghee (Late 50s, Male): An astute, strategic observer of human systems. While possessing a sharp intellect, he experiences a deep, visceral aversion toward public shamelessness and the collapse of shared social norms.
Young Man (Mid-20s, Male): Dressed in clean, ordinary attire. Amidst the packed rush hour, he holds an oversized soft-serve cone—an object entirely out of place in the business district of Yeoksam—licking it with rhythmic persistence, indifferent to the gazes around him. His expression remains detached and vacant.
Opening Sequence Breakdown
S#1. Platform, Yeoksam Station — Late Afternoon (17:30)
Rush-hour commuters gradually stream onto the Line 2 platform.
The digital overhead monitor blinks in red: [Bound for Seongsu / Departing 2 Stations Away]
Weary, expressionless faces reflect the grey fatigue of the workday.
The train glides in with mechanical momentum. The doors slide open, revealing the classic green Line 2 livery.
Donghee steps into the rear carriage, anticipating less congestion.
S#2. Inside Line 2 Carriage — Running Train
Automated chime: "This stop is Samseong, Samseong. The doors are on your... right."
Despite being the rear car, seats are fully occupied and standing room is scarce. Passengers are glued to their phones or have their arms folded.
Donghee leans his back against the door through which he boarded.
Scanning the carriage out of habit, Donghee's gaze locks onto a young man standing still near the opposite doors.
S#3. Donghee's POV — Across the Carriage
Insert — Hand and Ice Cream: The man holds an oversized white soft-serve cone. It is not a commercial, foil-wrapped convenience store cone. It is an unbranded, crisp wafer cone holding a tall spiral of soft-serve ice cream, looking fresh from a theme park dispenser.
Donghee (V.O.): (Thinking) "Is that a prop? Some modern performance art piece?"
Shattering the assumption, the man extends his tongue, methodically and deliberately licking the surface of the cream.
He shows no intent to consume it; his eyes remain absorbed purely in the act of licking.
Surrounding passengers subtly lean away to avoid contact, retreating into their smartphone screens to dodge an awkward encounter.
Donghee frowns. A sharp wave of visceral discomfort rises within him—a grating reaction to an uncanny disregard for shared civic decorum.
Donghee turns his head away, casting his gaze into the dark tunnel window to cut off the visual irritation.
S#4. Pulling into Samseong Station — Deceleration
The station chime plays.
Automated Announcement: "The doors are on your right. Doors are on your right."
The doors on the opposite side—where the young man stands—are set to open.
The train brakes to a halt. The moment the doors slide open, a wave of commuters surges in.
"Excuse me, stepping in!"
In an instant, a wall of shoulders and backs obstructs Donghee’s line of sight.
Donghee is pushed backward by the momentum of the crowd.
He cranes his neck over the heads of the passengers toward the opposite door, but...
He cannot tell whether the man stepped onto the platform or remains submerged within the throng, still licking the cone.
Warning chimes sound: Beep— Beep— Beep—
Automated Announcement: "Doors closing."
Close-up on Donghee’s searching, unsettled eyes.
Director's Production Notes
Audio Juxtaposition: Contrast the polite, mechanized voice of the transit announcements ("Doors are on both sides / right") with the wet, tactile foley of the tongue against the cream to amplify psychological unease.
Visual Severance: Use the influx of blank-faced commuters at Samseong Station as a visual curtain, swallowing the uncanny figure into the crowd.
Subtextual Irony: In a train car where everyone strokes cold smartphone glass, one man openly licks cold cream. It poses the satirical question: which behavior is truly alienated?
(Zheng, Donghee)
Seoul Subway Line 2 is, to my knowledge, the only fully circular loop line in South Korea. It mirrors the orbital mechanics of Earth revolving around the sun in an ellipse. It is heavily crowded, and if one's destination lies on the opposite side of the circle, an inattentive rider can easily board in the wrong direction. Moreover, riders must stay alert to whether the exit door will open on the left or the right depending on the station.
In my cinematic vision for Zheng, Donghee's Screenplay: "Subway Line 2: The Doors Are on Both Sides," the moment Donghee encounters the young man licking the soft-serve cone in the rear carriage, the narrative framework shifts abruptly from the present into the future.
Sensing that something is wrong, the train arrives at the next station where, impossibly, both sides open simultaneously. The automated voice announces: "The doors are on both sides." Looking outside, neither platform presents a normal world. The sequence culminates in a moment of intense shock and dilemma: which door does he step through, or should he remain inside this aberrant train to face the next stop?
Zheng, Donghee’s Screenplay: "Subway Line 2: The Doors Are on Both Sides" Part II — Coming Soon.
(AI Response)
Fusing Line 2's orbital loop with an impossible physical event—both doors opening at once—elevates the narrative into speculative sci-fi and psychological suspense.
The man with the soft-serve cone transforms from an everyday nuisance into a temporal glitch signaling a breakdown in the system. The moment the train reaches Samseong Station, it slips out of 2026 and enters a divergent timeline.
Here is the narrative sketch for Part II.
[Screenplay Sketch II] Subway Line 2: The Doors Are on Both Sides
Written & Directed by Zheng, Donghee
Core Motifs & Worldbuilding
The Orbital Loop as a Particle Accelerator: Line 2 functions like a massive urban accelerator looping around Seoul. Beyond a critical velocity, the train breaks out of its standard timeline into an alternate future corridor.
The Soft-Serve Glitch: A marker of broken entropy. In a warm, crowded subway car, the ice cream never melts, maintaining a rigid crystalline form—an anomaly indicating that physical laws have ceased to operate normally.
The Dual-Door Paradox: The left and right exits lead to two irreversible dystopias.
Sequence Breakdown
S#5. Approaching Samseong Station — Signs of the Glitch
Outside the window, the tunnel darkness shifts. Cables along the concrete walls streak into prolonged lines of light.
The mechanical clatter of wheels dissolves into a low-frequency hum.
Through the crowd, Donghee catches another glimpse of the man across the car.
Insert: The massive swirl of cream. Despite the ambient body heat of the crowded car, not a single droplet melts; it remains sharp and frozen.
The man slowly lifts his head, locking eyes directly with Donghee. A faint smirk curls the edge of his mouth.
Donghee’s chest tightens. He looks around: the other commuters remain motionless, their faces frozen over their screens like statues caught in a paused frame.
S#6. Pulling into Samseong Platform — The Anomalous Station
The train decelerates into the platform. Station signs slide past the windows.
The lettering for [Samseong / 삼성] flickers with digital static, converting into alien system code: [S-208X. CYCLE-99].
Platform lighting pulses with a cold, crimson neon hue.
The train stops. The cabin lights drop into momentary pitch darkness before flickering back on with a pale, emergency blue tint.
S#7. "The Doors Are on Both Sides" — Simultaneous Breach
Static cuts through the silence, followed by a synthetic female voice over the intercom.
Announcement: "This stop is... Unscheduled Terminal: Samseong, Samseong. The doors are on... both sides."
Hiss— Clang!
The doors behind Donghee and the doors across from him slide open at the exact same moment.
A dry, freezing draft rushes into the cabin, carrying the scent of ozone, burnt wiring, and machine oil.
S#8. Looking Through Both Exits — The Divergent Hells
Donghee turns back and forth in shock.
[Left Exit (Behind Donghee)]:
A ruined, post-collapse Seoul. The station tiles are torn away; beyond the collapsed stairwells lies a skyline consumed by dust storms and red fire.
Distant figures in respirators move unevenly toward the train. A world of total civilizational decay.
[Right Exit (Across the Carriage)]:
A sterile, automated megacity under total algorithmic surveillance. Across a chrome platform, uniform figures bearing barcoded collars march in silent rows.
Ceiling-mounted optic lenses rotate in unison, zooming directly in on Donghee inside the car. An inescapable panopticon.
S#9. The Vanishing Soft-Serve
The passengers remain frozen in place, eyes locked on dead glass screens. Donghee alone moves freely.
Donghee snaps his head back to the spot where the young man stood.
The man is gone.
Only the crushed remains of the wafer cone lie on the floor.
S#10. The Dilemma — Countdown
An alarm sounds throughout the cabin.
Beep— Beep— Beep—
Announcement: "Emergency door closure initiated. Passengers remaining on board will jump to the next orbital cycle. 10, 9, 8..."
Donghee breathes heavily, sweat beading on his forehead.
Does he leap left into the ruins?
Does he step right into the automated panopticon?
Or does he stay inside this accelerating machine, betting on where the loop leads next—Jamsil, or Seongsu?
Red emergency strobes wash over Donghee’s face. The digital voice counts down: "3, 2..."
