27:12 Since the harbor was unsuitable to winter in, 항구가 겨울을 나기에 적합하지 않았기 때문에,

the majority decided that we should sail on, hoping to reach Phoenix and winter there.

대다수는 피닉스에 도착해 그곳에서 겨울을 나기를 바라며, 계속 항해하기로 결정했다.

This was a harbor in Crete, facing both southwest and northwest.

이곳은 크레타섬에 있는 항구로, 남서쪽과 북서쪽 양방향을 향하고 있었다.

27:13 When a gentle south wind began to blow, 부드러운 남풍이 불기 시작했을 때,

they thought they had obtained what they wanted;

그들은 자신들이 원하는 것을 얻었다고 생각했다;

so they weighed anchor(닻을 올리다) and sailed along the shore of Crete.

그래서 그들은 닻을 올리고 크레타 해안을 따라 항해했다.

27:14 Before very long, a wind of hurricane force, called the "northeaster," swept down from the island.

얼마 지나지 않아 '동북풍(northeaster)'이라고 불리는, 태풍 급 위력을 지닌 바람이 섬에서부터 거세게 몰아닥쳤다.

27:15 The ship was caught by the storm and could not head into the wind;

그 배는 폭풍에 휘말려 바람을 거슬러 나아갈 수 없었다.

so we gave way to it and were driven along.

그래서 우리는 그것에 몸을 맡겼고, 그대로 떠밀려갔다.

27:16 As we passed to the lee of a small island called Cauda, we were hardly able to make the lifeboat secure.

가우다(Cauda)라고 불리는 작은 섬의 바람이 닿지 않는 쪽을 지날 때, 우리는 구명정을 제대로 고정하기가 무척 어려웠다.

27:17 When the men had hoisted it aboard, 사람들이 그것을 배 위로 끌어올렸을 때,

they passed ropes under the ship itself to hold it together.

그들은 배가 하나로 유지되도록 배 아래로 밧줄을 통과시켰다.

Fearing that they would run aground on the sandbars of Syrtis,

그들은 시르티스의 모래톱에 좌초될 것을 두려워하여

they lowered the sea anchor and let the ship be driven along.

그들은 바다에 닻을 내리고 배가 그대로 떠밀려가게 두었다.

27:18 We took such a violent battering from the storm that the next day they began to throw the cargo overboard.

우리는 폭풍으로부터 워낙 거센 타격을 받았기에, 이튿날 그들은 화물을 바다로 내던지기 시작했다.

27:19 On the third day, they threw the ship's tackle overboard with their own hands.

사흘째 되는 날, 그들은 자기들 손으로 배의 장비를 바다에 던져 버렸다.

27:20 When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, 

며칠 동안 해와 별이 보이지 않고 폭풍이 계속해서 몰아치자,

we finally gave up all hope of being saved. 마침내 우리는 구조받을 모든 희망을 포기했다.

27:21 After the men had gone a long time without food, 사람들은 오랫 동안 음식을 먹지 못했다. 

Paul stood up before them and said: 바울이 그들 앞에 일어서서 말했다.

"Men, you should have taken my advice not to sail from Crete; 

"사람들아, 너희는 그레데에서 항해하지 말라고 했던 나의 충고를 받아들여야만 했습니다. 

then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss.

그랬더라면 여러분은 이런 피해와 손실을 면할 수 있었을 것입니다.

27:22 But now I urge you to keep up your courage,

하지만 지금 나는 당신들에게 용기를 잃지 말라고 당부드립니다.

because not one of you will be lost; 왜냐하면 당신들 중에 누구도 잃지 않을 것이기 때문입니다.

only the ship will be destroyed. 오직 배만 부서질 것입니다.
