Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! In the Gospel of today’s liturgy, Jesus describes a great tribulation: “the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light” (Mk 13:24). Faced with this suffering, many might think of the end of the world, but the Lord seizes the opportunity to offer a different interpretation, saying: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away” (Mk 13:31). We can take a closer look at this expression‎: what will pass and what will remain.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 복된 주일입니다. 오늘 전례 복음에서 예수님께서 큰 환난을 묘사하십니다. “해는 어두워지고 달은 빛을 내지 않을 것이다.” (마르코 13,24) 이 고통에 직면하여 많은 사람이 세상의 종말을 생각할지 모르지만, 주님께서는 그 기회에, 다음과 같이 말씀하시며, 다른 해석을 제시하십니다. “하늘과 땅은 사라질지라도 내 말은 결코 사라지지 않을 것이다.” (마르코 13,31) 우리는 이 표현을 좀 더 자세히 살펴볼 수 있습니다. 즉 무엇이 지나가고 무엇이 남을 것인가, 알아봅시다.

First of all, what will pass. In some circumstances in our life, when we are going through a crisis or experience some failure, as well as when we see around us the pain caused by wars, violence, natural disasters, we have the feeling that everything is coming to an end, and we feel that even the most beautiful things pass away. Crises and failures, however, though painful, are important, because they teach us to accord everything its due weight, not to attach our hearts to the realities of this world, because they will pass: they are destined to fade away.

우선, 무엇이 지나갈까요? 우리 삶의 어떤 상황에서, 우리가 위기를 겪거나 실패를 경험할 때, 그리고 우리 주위에 전쟁, 폭력, 자연 재해로 인한 고통을 볼 때, 우리는 모든 것이 끝나게 된다는 느낌을 갖고, 가장 아름다운 것조차도 사라진다고 느낍니다. 그러나 위기와 실패는 고통스럽지만 중요합니다. 왜냐하면 그것들은 우리에게 모든 것에 각각에 합당한 무게를 부여하고 우리의 마음을 세상의 현실에 집착하지 말라고 가르치기 때문입니다. 그것들은 지나갈 것이고 사라질 것이기 때문입니다.

At the same time, Jesus talks about what will remain. Everything passes away, but His words will not pass away: Jesus’ words will remain for eternity. He thus invites us to trust in the Gospel, which contains a promise of salvation and eternity, and not to live under the anguish of death. For while everything passes away, Christ remains. In Him, in Christ, we shall one day find again the things and people who have passed away and who have accompanied us in our earthly existence. In the light of this promise of resurrection, every reality takes on a new meaning: everything dies and we too will one day die, but we will lose nothing of what we have built and loved, because death will be the beginning of a new life.

동시에 예수님께서 남을 것에 대해 말씀하십니다. 모든 것은 지나가버리지만, 그분의 말씀은 사라지지 않을 것입니다. 예수님의 말씀은 영원히 남을 것입니다. 그래서 예수님께서 우리에게 구원과 영원의 약속이 담긴 복음을 믿고, 죽음의 고뇌에 눌려 살지 말라고 권하십니다. 모든 것이 지나가버리지만 그리스도께서 남으십니다. 그분 안에, 그리스도 안에, 우리는 어느 날 사라져버렸던 것들과 사람들, 그리고 우리의 지상 생활에서 우리를 동반했던 사람들을 다시 찾을 것입니다. 부활의 이 약속에 비추어, 모든 현실이 새로운 의미를 갖습니다. 즉 모든 것이 죽고 우리도 어느 날 죽을 것이지만 우리는 우리가 건설하고 사랑하였던 것 중에 아무것도 잃지 않을 것입니다. 죽음이 새로운 삶의 시작이기 때문입니다.

Brothers and sisters, even in tribulations, in crises, in failures, the Gospel invites us to look at life and history without fear of losing what ends, but with joy for what will remain. Let us not forget that God is preparing for us a future of life and joy.

형제자매 여러분, 복음은 우리에게 고난, 위기, 실패 속에서도, 지나가는 것을 잃을까 두려워하지 말고, 남을 것에 대한 기쁨으로 삶과 역사를 바라보라고 권합니다. 하느님께서 우리를 위하여 삶과 기쁨의 미래를 준비하고 계시다는 것을 잊지 맙시다.

And so, let us ask ourselves: are we attached to earthly things, which pass away, which pass quickly, or to the words of the Lord, which remain and guide us towards eternity? Let us ask ourselves this question, please. It will help us. And let us pray to the Blessed Virgin, who entrusted herself totally to the Word of God, so that She may intercede for us.

그러므로 우리 스스로에게 다음과 같이 물어봅시다. 우리는 지나가버리고, 빠르게 지나가는 세상의 것들에 집착하는가 아니면 남아서 우리를 영원으로 인도하는 주님의 말씀에 집중하는가? 스스로에게 이 질문들을 던지십시오. 우리에게 도움이 될 것입니다. 그리고 하느님의 말씀에 자신을 온전히 맡기신 복되신 동정 성모님께 우리를 위해 중재해주시길 청합시다.
