■ The Final Cutting Practice and Star Hyung Training in the Rain
----
Because there was not enough bamboo available, we kept the actual cutting practice brief and focused primarily on theoretical explanations of sword principles, posture, and the flow of power. Based on these principles, we practiced fundamental cuts, seeking harmony among breathing, posture, the center, and the direction of power within each movement.
Although this was a private training session held in a light rain, we practiced with even greater concentration because it was the final training session of my visit to the United States.
We then practiced part of Star Hyung, which may be regarded as the flower and culmination of the two-sword system of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu.
When one begins to understand Star Hyung in its true depth, one realizes that its purpose extends far beyond simply learning how to use two swords.
Star Hyung is a practice through which one learns to understand space,
discover the center,
and realize the true nature of movement.
Within the philosophy of KiMu, the principle of Star Hyung may be summarized as follows:
Star Hyung is not a practice for merely learning the trajectories of the swords.
It is a practice through which the body comes to understand the natural cycle that begins at the center, undergoes change and expansion, and ultimately returns to the center.
If Star Hyung is understood only as a two-dimensional figure or a series of movements performed on a flat plane, its true essence cannot be reached. Its authentic structure must be perceived and embodied within three-dimensional space, where forward and backward, left and right, and upward and downward movements all interact.
Six outer points and a central axis come together to form a living structure. Within this structure, the practitioner experiences balance and direction, distance and depth, center and change, while gradually expanding awareness throughout the surrounding space.
From this perspective, the six outer points and the single central axis—seven points in total—may also be viewed as a symbolic reflection of the Big Dipper.
Just as the Big Dipper has long served as a guide for travelers, the seven points of Star Hyung guide the practitioner on an inner journey toward harmony with the order of nature and the universe.
S: Starting Point
7: The Origin—the Center to Which We Return
The practitioner begins at the starting point and moves through multiple directions and dimensions. Yet every change arises from the center and ultimately returns to it. This is not merely the completion of a sequence of movements, but a process of rediscovering one’s origin and the reference point of the mind.
The star should not be regarded merely as a shape.
It should be understood and practiced as a pathway of consciousness extending toward the universe.
Therefore, the star in Star Hyung represents far more than a geometric form. It symbolizes the path through which human consciousness begins at its own center, expands through space and nature toward the universe, and finally returns to its original center.
Amid the stillness of the rain and the intensity of focused practice, this was a brief yet deeply meaningful final training session in which we reflected upon both fundamental cutting and the principles of Star Hyung.
