[도깨비불]

"오지만디아스(Ozymandias)"는 이집트의 파라오를 말하는 그리스 단어입니다.
이 단어가 현재에 와서 영어로도 쓰이게 된 이유는

권력의 일시성과 모든 인간 제국의 불가피한 쇠퇴라는 주제를 탐구하는

퍼시 비시 셸리의 시에서 쓰이고부터 입니다.

역사적으로 분명하게 존재했던 위인 또는 명인들 이지만

현실에서는 확실하게 잊혀진 인물들을 일걸을때 ’Ozymandias‘라고 불러 줍니다.

한글로 번역된 단어가 없어서 ‘역사속 위인’ 이라고 제가 한글로 만들었는데요.

인터넷 영어사전에 등록하기가 안되는군요.

비시 셸리의 시에서의 오지만디아스는

이집트 파라오 람세스 2세라는 강력한 통치자의 동상이

사막에서 폐허가 되어있는 오늘날의 형태로 만나는 여행자의 감정을 묘사했습다.

그 동상은 이제 부서지고 바위화되었고,

다리와 부서진 얼굴만 남아 있는데다

그의 위대함과 권력을 선언하는 통치자의 자랑스러운 비문에도 불구하고,

시간의 흐름은 그와 그의 제국은 무의미하고

잊혀지게 된다는 이야기를 통해,

시인은 리더가 자신의 시대에 아무리 강력하거나 강요하는 것 일지라도,

그들은 궁극적으로 시간의 파괴 대상이 되고

미래 세대에 의해 잊혀질 것이라는 생각을 전달해줍니다.
