예수께서 나가사 습관을 따라 감람 산에 가시매 제자들도 따라갔더니

그 곳에 이르러 그들에게 이르시되 유혹에 빠지지 않게 기도하라 하시고

그들을 떠나 돌 던질 만큼 가서 무릎을 꿇고 기도하여 이르시되

'아버지여 만일 아버지의 뜻이거든 이 잔을 내게서 옮기시옵소서

그러나 내 원대로 마시옵고 아버지의 원대로 되기를 원하나이다 하시니'

천사가 하늘로부터 예수께 나타나 힘을 더하더라

예수께서 힘쓰고 애써 더욱 간절히 기도하시니 땀이 땅에 떨어지는 핏방울 같이 되더라

기도 후에 일어나 제자들에게 가서 슬픔으로 인하여 잠든 것을 보시고 이르시되

어찌하여 자느냐 시험에 들지 않게 일어나 기도하라 하시니라 (눅22:39~46)

According to all four Gospels, immediately after the Last Supper,

Jesus took a walk to pray (John 18:1). '

예수께서 이 말씀을 하시고 제자들과 함께 기드론 시내 건너편으로 나가시니

그 곳에 동산이 있는데 제자들과 함께 들어가시니라'

Matthew and Mark identify this place of prayer as Gethsemane.

Jesus was accompanied by St. Peter, St. John and St. James the Greater,

whom he asked to stay awake and pray. He moved "a stone's throw away" from them,

where He felt overwhelming sadness and anguish, and said "My Father,

if it is possible, let this cup pass me by. Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it."

Then, a little while later, He said, "If this cup cannot pass by, but I must drink it,

your will be done!" (Matthew 26:42).

'다시 두 번째 나아가 기도하여 이르시되 내 아버지여 만일 내가 마시지 않고는

이 잔이 내게서 지나갈 수 없거든 아버지의 원대로 되기를 원하나이다 하시고'

He said this prayer three times, checking on the three apostles between each prayer

and finding them asleep. He commented:

 "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak".

An angel came from heaven to strengthen him. During his agony as he prayed,

 "his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down upon the ground".(Luke 22:44).

'예수께서 힘쓰고 애써 더욱 간절히 기도하시니 땀이 땅에 떨어지는 핏방울 같이 되더라'

When he had fasted forty days and forty nights,

he was hungry afterward.

Matthew 4:2

그분께서는 사십 일을 밤낮으로 단식하신 뒤라 시장하셨다.
