He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

To be born-again by God's grace is to be born spiritually. The Bible talks about born-again in three ways. First, born-again is possible only by God's will and plan. "Children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God"(John 1:13). Second, born-again is possible only by the work of the Holy Spirit. "Jesus answered, 'I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit'"(John 3:5). Third, born-again is possible by the truth. "He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created"(James1:18).
Paul said that we were saved by God's mercy. "He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit"(Titus 3:5). The prophet Jeremiah also said that we are not consumed because of God's mercy. "Because of the LORD'S great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail"(Lam 3:22). Peter also said that we had not received mercy(1 Pet 2:10).
Therefore, the Bible reaches us that we gain a new life by being born-again. Born-again originally means 'to make one reborn.' "For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God"( Pet 1:23). Many Scripture in the New Testament say that born-again is the beginning of the Christian life(Gal 6:15; 1 John 5:1-4). "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!"(2 Cor 5:17). "For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works"(Eph 2:10).
Foundation of christian life lies on receiving, and living a new life. And life implies growth. Nathanial marshman William said, "If one does not see growth in a Christian, he or she was probably never been born-again in the first place." Born-again is not the end of Christian experience, but only the beginning and the foundation for growth. Born-again brings God's blessings and peace, which is eternal life.

우리를 구원하시되 우리의 행한바 의로운 행위로 말미암지 아니하고 오직 그의 긍휼하심을 좇아 중생의 씻음과 성령의 새롭게 하심으로 하셨나니

하나님의 은혜로 거듭난다는 것은 영적으로 태어나는 것을 의미합니다. 성경에서는 거듭남에 관해 세 가지로 말하고 있습니다. 첫째로, 거듭나는 것은 하나님의 뜻과 계획 속에 이루어집니다. “이는 혈통으로나 육정으로나 사람의 뜻으로 나지 아니하고 오직 하나님께로서 난 자들이니라”(요 1:13). 둘째로, 거듭나는 것은 성령의 역사로 이루어집니다. “예수님께서 대답하시되 진실로 진실로 네게 이르노니 사람이 물과 성령으로 나지 아니하면 하나님 나라에 들어갈 수 없느니라”(요 3:5). 셋째로, 거듭나는 것은 진리의 말씀으로 이루어집니다. “그가 그 조물 중에 우리로 한 첫 열매가 되게 하시려고 자기의 뜻을 좇아 진리의 말씀으로 우리를 낳으셨느니라”(약 1:18).
바울은 우리가 하나님의 긍휼로 구원을 받았다고 말하고 있습니다. “우리를 구원하시되 우리의 행한 바 의로운 행위로 말미암지 아니하고 오직 그의 긍휼하심을 좇아 중생의 씻음과 성령의 새롭게 하심으로 하셨나니”(딛 3:5). 예레미야 선지자도 우리가 소멸되지 않음은 하나님의 긍휼 때문이라고 말했습니다. “여호와의 자비와 긍휼이 무궁하시므로 우리가 진멸되지 아니함이니이다”(애 3:22). 베드로도 우리가 과거에는 하나님의 긍휼을 얻지 못했으나 이제는 긍휼을 얻은 자들이라고 말하고 있습니다(벧전 2:10).
그러므로 성경은 우리가 먼저 거듭나야 새로운 생명을 얻게 된다고 말합니다. 거듭난다는 말은 ‘다시 태어나도록 만들다’라는 뜻이 있습니다. “너희가 거듭난 것이 썩어질 씨로 된 것이 아니요 썩지 아니할 씨로 된 것이니 하나님의 살아 있고 항상 있는 말씀으로 되었느니라”(벧전 1:23). 그러므로 신약의 여러 곳에서 거듭남이 그리스도인의 삶의 시작임을 말하고 있습니다(갈 6:15; 요일 5:1-4). “그런즉 누구든지 그리스도 안에 있으면 새로운 피조물이라 이전 것은 지나갔으니 보라 새것이 되었도다”(고후 5:17). “우리는 그의 만드신 바라 그리스도 예수 안에서 선한 일을 위하여 지으심을 받은 자니”(엡 2:10).
그리스도인은 하나님이 주시는 새로운 생명을 얻어 그 생명의 삶을 사는 자입니다. 이 생명의 삶은 성장을 내포하고 있습니다. 나다니엘 마쉬맨 윌리암은 “성장이 기대되는 시간에 성장을 전혀 볼 수 없다면 거듭남의 역사가 없었던 것으로 인정할 수밖에 없다”고 말했습니다. 거듭나는 것은 끝이 아니라 그리스도인의 삶의 시작이며 성장의 기초입니다. 거듭나는 것은 끝이 아니라 그리스도인의 삶의 시작이며 성장의 기초입니다. 거듭남의 진정한 축복과 은혜는 영원한 생명을 얻는 것입니다.
