This year’s collection of images from Capture the Atlas features an extraordinary milestone: a historic photograph of our galaxy taken from the International Space Station by Nasa astronaut Don Pettit, who recently returned from his latest mission onboard the ISS.

1. A Sea of Lupines by Max Inwood. The annual lupine bloom in New Zealand is spectacular, with fields of colourful flowers stretching across the Mackenzie Basin. This region in the heart of the South Island is renowned for its dark skies, making the scene even more surreal at night. Above the flowers, you can see the band of the outer Milky Way, alongside the constellations Orion, Gemini, and the Pleiades. Joining them are the bright planets Jupiter and Mars, with a strong display of green airglow visible along the horizon. # Max Inwood/Milky Way photographer of the year

2. The Night Guardians by Rositsa Dimitrova. Easter Island had been on my bucket list for a long time, and it once seemed almost impossible to reach. On our first night there, the weather forecast looked promising, so we decided to go ahead with the tour our group had booked months earlier. However, Rapa Nui sits in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, where the weather is unpredictable. An hour later, we were frantically photographing the statues at Rano Raraku, when the sky suddenly began to clear. 3. Valle de los Cactus by Pablo Ruiz. A panoramic shot of the Milky Way in a remote area of the Atacama cactus valley, known for its large concentration of cactus plants. I love this place with its countless possibilities. The panorama was taken just as the galactic centre began to rise, with the spectacular Gum Nebula visible on the right. It was an especially bright night with a breathtaking sky. The valley isn’t easy to navigate, but it’s always worth trying to find new compositions in such stunning locations beneath the night sky. # Pablo Ruiz/Milky Way photographer of the year

4. Boot Arch Perseids by Mike Abramyan. The Perseid meteor shower occurs every August. In 2024, I had planned to photograph it from the Canadian Rockies, but wildfires forced me to change my plans. I found a safe haven in the Eastern Sierra Nevada. Sitting on the rock is my friend Arne, gazing up at the magnificent core of our galaxy. Each meteor is painstakingly aligned to its true location in the night sky. The final depiction shows all the meteors I captured, combined into one frame – as if the Earth hadn’t been rotating and all the meteors had fallen at once. # Mike Abramyan/Milky Way photographer of the year

5. Double Milky Way Arch Over Matterhorn by Angel Fux. This image captures the rare double arch Milky Way, where both the winter Milky Way (with Orion rising) and the summer Milky Way (with the galactic centre) appear in the same night – a seamless transition between seasons. Taken at 3,200 metres, in the heart of winter, the night was brutally cold, testing both my endurance and equipment. This is a time blend, preserving the real positions of both arches by combining frames taken hours apart, with the foreground captured at dawn for the best detail. # Angel Fux/Milky Way photographer of the year

6. Winter Fairy Tale by Uroš Fink. Undoubtedly my wildest location this winter: Austria’s Dobratsch mountain. After a two-hour hike through the snow with a 22kg backpack and sled, the stunning views kept me energised. I spent the evening exploring compositions, and this is my favourite: a panorama of the winter Milky Way with reddish nebulae, stretching above Dobratsch. The sky was magnificent, with Jupiter and Mars shining brightly. 우로시 핑크의 작품, 겨울 동화. 올 겨울 내가 가장 열정적으로 촬영한 곳은 단연 오스트리아의 도브라치 산이다. 22kg의 배낭과 썰매를 메고 눈밭을 두 시간 동안 하이킹한 후, 아름다운 경치는 내게 활력을 불어넣었다. 저녁 내내 여러 구도를 탐구했는데, 그중에서도 가장 마음에 드는 것은 도브라치 산 위로 펼쳐진 붉은 성운이 있는 겨울 은하수의 파노라마이다. 하늘은 장엄했고, 목성과 화성이 밝게 빛나고 있었다. 앞쪽에는 오두막이 보이는데, 그곳에서 은하수 중심부의 완벽한 사진을 찍기 위해 세 시간 동안 얼어붙은 채 기다렸다.

7. Blossom by Ethan Su. After three years of waiting, the Yushan alpine rhododendrons are finally in bloom once again on Taiwan’s 3,000-metre-high Hehuan mountain. On this special night, distant clouds helped block city light pollution, revealing an exceptionally clear view of the Milky Way. A solar flare from active region AR3664 reached Earth that evening, intensifying the airglow and adding an otherworldly touch to the sky. 이탄 수의 작품, "개화(開花)". 3년의 기다림 끝에 타이완(臺灣)의 해발 3,000m 높이 허환산(合歡山)에 위산 고산 진달래가 드디어 다시 꽃을 피웠다. 이 특별한 밤에 멀리 구름이 도시의 빛 공해를 막아 은하수의 아름다운 모습을 드러냈다. 그날 저녁, 활동 영역 AR3664에서 발생한 태양 플레어가 지구에 도달하여 대기광을 더욱 강화하고 하늘에 신비로운 분위기를 더했다. 이 희귀한 자연현상들이 어우러져 별빛 가득한 하늘 아래 생생하게 빛나는 진달래꽃들이 숨 막힐 듯 아름다운 풍경을 만들어냈다.

☀︎☀️태양 플레어는 태양흑점과 관련된 자기 에너지가 방출되면서 발생하는 강렬한 복사 에너지 폭발이다. 플레어는 태양계에서 가장 큰 폭발 현상이다. 태양 표면에서 밝은 영역으로 관측되며, 몇 분에서 몇 시간까지 지속될 수 있다.

8. Diamond Beach Emerald Sky by Brent Martin. With a clear night forecast and the Milky Way core returning for 2025, I set out to explore the Great Ocean Road. After a few setbacks – such as getting the car stuck on a sandy track – I almost gave up. However, I pushed on and found a great spot above the beach to capture the scene. The night was full of colour, with comet C/2024 G3 Atlas and a pink aurora in the early hours, followed by the Milky Way rising amid intense green airglow. 브렌트 마틴의 작품, 다이아몬드 비치 에메랄드 스카이. 맑은 밤하늘과 2025년에 은하수 중심이 다시 관측될 것이라는 예보를 접하고 그레이트 오션 로드를 탐험하기 시작했다. 차가 모래길에 갇히는 등 몇 번의 좌절 끝에 거의 포기할 뻔했다. 하지만 포기하지 않고 계속 나아가 해변 위의 멋진 장소를 찾아 그 풍경을 담았다. 밤은 온통 색색으로 물들었다. 혜성 C/2024 G3 아틀라스와 새벽녘의 분홍빛 오로라가 보였고, 이어서 강렬한 녹색 대기광 속에서 은하수가 솟아올랐다. 여러 어려움에도 불구하고, 이 아름다운 사진이 주는 보상과 그 풍경에 대한 기억은 그 모든 것을 가치 있게 만들었다.

🏄🏖️🚌그레이트 오션 로드(Great Ocean Road)는 호주 빅토리아주 남동쪽 해안을 따라 243km에 걸쳐 뻗어 있는 도로로, 아름다운 경치와 다양한 명소로 유명하다. 서핑부터 열대우림 탐험, 야생동물 관찰까지 다양한 즐길 거리를 제공하는 인기 관광지이다.

9. Bottle Tree Paradise by Benjamin Barakat. Socotra is one of my favourite places, but when it comes to a specific location, this one stands out. It doesn’t have an official name, as it’s not a destination for the few fortunate tourists who visit Socotra. After shooting there for the past four years and scouting the island, I’ve discovered hidden gems like this one, which I call Bottle Tree Paradise. Bottle trees are unique to Socotra, a result of the island’s long isolation from the mainland. 벤자민 바라캇의 작품, 병나무 파라다이스. 소코트라는 내가 가장 좋아하는 곳 중 하나지만, 특정 장소를 꼽자면 이곳이 단연 돋보인다. 소코트라를 방문하는 소수의 운 좋은 관광객들에게만 추천되는 곳이 아니기 때문에 공식적인 명칭은 없다. 지난 4년간 그곳에서 촬영하고 섬을 정찰하면서, 내가 "병나무 파라다이스"라고 부르는 이 숨은 보석 같은 곳을 발견했다. 병나무는 소코트라 섬이 오랫동안 본토와 고립되어 있었기 때문에 이곳만의 독특한 특징을 지니게 되었다. 이러한 고립으로 인해 병 모양의 줄기와 같은 독특한 특징들이 생겨났다.

10. Cosmic Fire by Sergio Montúfar. On the early morning of 2 June 2024, I summited Acatenango Volcano for the first time, hoping to witness the fiery beauty of the neighbouring Volcan de Fuego against the Milky Way’s backdrop. That night, the volcano was incredibly active. Above, the Milky Way stretched diagonally across the sky. As the volcano erupted, the ash plume rose vertically, forming an acute angle of about 45 degrees with the galaxy’s diagonal path, creating a stunning visual contrast between Earth’s fury and the cosmos’ serenity. # Sergio Montúfar/Milky Way photographer of the year

11. Starlit Ocean by Xingyang Cai. Capturing this image was a race against time, light and distance. With comet Tsuchinshan–Atlas (C/2023 A3) making its approach, I knew I had a rare opportunity to see it with the naked eye before it faded into the cosmos. I embarked on a five-hour round trip to McWay Falls in Big Sur. My window was narrow – just six precious minutes of true darkness before the Moon rose and washed out the night sky. But those six minutes were unforgettable. It was one of the most vivid and humbling naked-eye comet sightings I’ve ever experienced. # Xingyang Cai/Milky Way photographer of the year

12. Echiwile Arch by Vikas Chander. When one Googles information about visiting Chad, the results aren’t very encouraging from a safety perspective. Nevertheless, the intrepid astrophotographer in me decided to take the chance and visit this landlocked country, specifically the Ennedi Massif in the north. Sparsely populated and devoid of light pollution, the three-day drive from the capital, N’Djamena, was well worth the risks involved. The region is filled with rock formations, shapes, and arches, offering an abundance of options for foreground elements to frame the dramatic night skies. # Vikas Chander/Milky Way photographer of the year

13. Tololo Lunar Eclipse Sky by Petr Horálek. On 14 March 2025, a total lunar eclipse occurred, especially visible over the Americas and the Pacific Ocean. I was fortunate to observe this particular eclipse from the NSF Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. You can see how epic the sky was during totality, as the moon darkened enough for the majestic Milky Way, the faint belt of zodiacal light, and prominent airglow to stand out. # Petr Horálek/Milky Way photographer of the year

페트르 호라렉(체코의 전체 사진작가)의 작품, 톨로로 월식 하늘. 2025년 3월 14일 아메리카 대륙과 태평양 상공에서 특히 눈에 띄는 개기월식(皆旣月蝕)이 발생했다. 나는 칠레에 있는 NSF 세로 톨로로 미주 천문대에서 이 특별한 월식을 관측할 수 있어서 행운이었다. 달이 어두워지면서 장엄한 은하수, 희미한 황도대(黃道帶), 그리고 뚜렷한 대기광(大氣光)이 돋보이면서 개기월식이 진행되는 동안 하늘이 얼마나 장엄했는지 확인할 수 있다.

14. Evolution of Stars by Kavan Chay The first image I captured from this spot in Otago, New Zealand, is the one I feel kick-started my astrophotography journey. The set of sea stacks provided a foreground subject facing the right direction, and being a local spot relatively free of light pollution, it was the perfect location to capture the Milky Way core. It felt fitting to try again with a few extra years of experience and an astro-modified camera, which allows for easier capture of hydrogen-alpha-rich regions of the sky. 카반 체이의 별의 진화. 뉴질랜드 오타고의 이 장소에서 찍은 첫 번째 사진이 나의 천체 사진 여정의 시작이 되었다고 생각한다. 바다에 떠 있는 듯한 바위들이 전경 피사체를 올바른 방향으로 향하게 해 주었고, 광공해가 비교적 적은 지역이라 은하수 중심부를 포착하기에 완벽한 장소였다. 몇 년간의 경험과 수소 알파선이 풍부한 하늘 영역을 더 쉽게 포착할 수 있는 천체 사진 전용 카메라로 다시 한번 시도해 보는 것이 적절하다고 생각했다. 오랜 경험 덕분에 파노라마 촬영과 편집이 훨씬 수월해졌다.

15. One in a Billion by Don Pettit. I float in the Cupola, looking out the seven windows composing this faceted transparent jewel. While my mind is submerged in contemplation, my eyes gorge on the dim reflections from a nighttime Earth. There are over eight billion people that call this planet home. There are seven of us that can say the same for Space Station. What a privilege it is to be here. I used an orbital star tracker to take out the star streak motion from orbit.
