Udana ... 7.3 Attached to Sensual Pleasures (1)

I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Savatthi at Jeta's Grove,

Anathapintika's monastery. And on that occasion, most of the people in Savattha were excessively

attached to sensual pleasures. They lived infatuated with, greedy for, addicted to, fastened to, absorbed

in sensual pleasures.

Then in the early morning, a large number of monks adjusted their under robes and — carrying their bowls

& robes — went into Savatthi for alms. Having gone for alms in Savatthi, after the meal, returning from

their alms round, they went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, having bowed down to him, sat to one

side. As they were sitting there, they said to the Blessed One, "Most of the people in Savatthi are

excessively attached to sensual pleasures. They live infatuated with, greedy for, addicted to, fastened

to, absorbed in sensual pleasures."

Then, on realizing the significance of that, the Blessed One on that occasion exclaimed:

Attached to sensual pleasures,
attached to sensual ties,
seeing no blame in the fetter,
        never will
those attached to the fetter, the tie,
                     cross over the flood
                                    so great & wide.

나는 이렇게 들었다. 어느 때 부처님께서 사바타 가까이 제타숲에 있는 아나싸핑디타 사원에 머물로 계

셨다. 그 어느 때 사바티에 있는 대부분의 사람들은 감각적 쾌락에 지나치게 집착하고 있었다. 그들은

감각적 쾌락에 이성을 잃고, 갈망하고, 몰두하고, 사로잡혀 있으며, 허우적대고 있었다.

그런 어느 아침에, 많은 무리의 비구들이 옷을 챙겨입고 발우를 들고 탁발하러 사바티에 가서 공양후

다시 돌아와 부터님께 거서 예를 갖추고 한쪽에 가서 앉았다. 그들은 앉자마자 부처님께 말했다,

"사바티의 대부분의 사람들은 감각적 쾌락에 이성을 잃고, 갈망하고, 몰두하고, 사로잡혀 있으며, 허우

적대고 있습니다."

그 때 부처님께서 그것의 중요성을 아시고 다음과 같이 말씀하셨다.

감각적 쾌락에 달라붙고
감각적 구속에 달라붙지만
속박이 괴로움임을 알지 못하기에
속박에, 구속에 달라붙어서
저 크고 넓은 (괴로움의) 강을 결코 건너지 못하네
