▣ Six in the fourth line : The army retreats(encamps on the left) ; there is no blame.
[Explanation]
Six in the fourth line(六四,육사) means that it is desirable for the army
to retreeat its camp / formation.
[Commentary]
As seen inthe word '左遷(좌천 - demotion),' '左次(좌차 - Jwachah)' refers to the 'military camp/tent'.
'左(좌 - Jwa)' means 'to push away / reject', and '次(차 - Chah)' refers to the 'military camp/tent'.
Conversely, '右行(우행 - Uhaeng)' means advancing.
Cheng Yi and Zhu Xi also agreed on the meaning as '退舍(퇴사 - retreating and encamping)'.
According to wang Bi's commentary, position 4 halds a rank/position,
but lacks subordinates who respond or follow .
Since one cannot take action without anyone responding, it retreats and sets up camp.
While line 3 suffered defeat by recklessly charging forward, line 4 must be viewed as a wise
position that seeks survival by retreating when the situation is unfavorable.
Therefore, line 4 is a Yin(陰,음) line occupying its correct position(正位,정위),
showing a flexible and compliant attitude.
Confucius's commentary is no different.
"Retreating because the situation is unfavorable is an act that does not lose standard principles
Life is only one, and in war, winning and losing ground is common practice
The following is related content regarding '左(좌 -Jwa)' and '次(차 - Chah)' found
in Spring and Autumn Annals(春秋傳,춘주전) :
A place where one sttays for one night is 師(사 -Ssa), two nights is 信(신 - Ssin),
and a camp resting for two nights or more is called 次(차 - Chah).
Strategists favored the right side, so retreating was called '左(좌 - Jwa)'.
That is, the high-ranking general resides on the right,
and the assistant general resides in the left.
InZhuge Liang's Eight Formations(八陣圖,팔진도), attacking from the front
was called '右(우 - U) and attacking from behind was called '左(좌 - Jwa)".
Right now is the proper timing to withdraw the military force [
This applies when the Shi Hexagram(師卦,사괘 - Army) changes into
the Lei-shui Xie Hexagram(雷水解卦,뇌수해괘 / Hexagram 40).
