Svante Henryson (1963) - Black Run (3:32 min.)
Andrei Ioniţă, cello
**Svante Henryson (born 1963)** is a Swedish composer, cellist, bassist, and double bassist known for blending jazz, classical, and rock styles. "Black Run" is a dynamic piece he composed in 2001 as the first movement of his suite *Colors in D* for solo cello, later adapted for cello with strings (2019) and other ensembles.[2][3][5]
## Piece Overview
"Black Run" lasts about 3 minutes and features a presto tempo with swing and straight feels, shifting from 115 to 128 BPM. It showcases Henry's autodidactic cello virtuosity through rapid runs, percussive effects, and jazz-infused rhythms, evoking a high-speed ski descent. The score sample reveals intricate notations like slurs, accents, and dynamic contrasts (fp to f).[2]
## Performances and Versions
Henryson premiered it live at Konserthuset in Stockholm (2008). Other recordings include duos with drummer Magnus Persson (2008), cellist Andrei Ioniță (2019 Spotify track), and as the opening movement in his *Concerto for Jazz Cello and Orchestra* with Metropole Orchestra at Cello Biennale 2022. Sheet music is available via his site.[4][6][9][10]
