작년에 올해의 야생동물 사진작가상에는 약 6만 장의 사진이 출품되었지만, 심사위원단은 단지 100장만 수상작으로 선정할 수 있다. 매년 25장의 사진을 추가로 선정하여 시민들에게 시민이 뽑은 상을 선정해 달라고 요청한다. 올해 시민이 뽑은 상위 5장의 사진은 다음과 같다. 갤러리에서 이 5개의 이미지와 시민이 뽑은 상(People's Choice Award)의 과거 수상작을 볼 수 있다.

Almost 60,000 images were entered into Wildlife Photographer of the Year last year, but our judges can only award 100 winners. Each year we choose an additional 25 photographs, from which we ask the public to select the recipient of the People’s Choice Award. Here are the top five images voted for by the public in this year's People’s Choice Award. You can see these five images and the past winners of the People's Choice Award in the gallery.

1. No Access, Ian Wood's Image. Winner, Special Award: People's Choice. An ambling Eurasian badger appears to glance up at badger graffiti on a quiet road in St Leonards-on-Sea, England, UK. Residents had been leaving food scraps on the pavement for foxes. But Ian noticed that badgers from a nearby sett were also coming to forage. After seeing a badger walking along the pavement by this wall late one night, he decided to photograph it. He set up a small hide on the edge of the road to take his picture. Only the light from a lamppost illuminated the creature as it ambled along, seemingly glancing up at the badger graffiti just in front of it.

접근금지(接近禁止), 이안 우드(영국)의 작품. 특별상: 시민이 뽑은 상 부문 우승작. 잉글랜드 세인트레오나즈온시의 조용한 도로에서 유럽오소리(European badger) 한 마리가 느릿느릿 걸어가며 오소리 그래피티를 올려다보고 있는 것처럼 보인다. 주민들은 여우를 위해 길바닥에 음식물 찌꺼기를 버려두고 있었다. 그런데 이안은 근처 굴에서 오소리들이 먹이를 찾으러 오는 것을 발견했다. 어느 날 밤에 이 담장 옆 보도를 따라 오소리 한 마리가 걸어가는 것을 보고, 그는 사진을 찍기로 했다. 그는 길가에 작은 은신처를 마련하고 사진을 찍었다. 가로등 불빛만이 오소리를 비추고 있었고, 오소리는 바로 앞에 있는 오소리 그래피티를 올려다보는 듯했다.

2. Edge of Night, Jess Findlay's Image. Highly Commended, Special Award: People's Choice. A ghostly barn owl exits the hayloft window of a derelict barn to hunt in fields outside Vancouver, Canada. Jess quietly watched the owl for several nights to understand its habits. He set up an invisible beam that would trigger a flash when the owl flew out of the barn. Simultaneously, a slow shutter speed gathered ambient light cast on the clouds and barn. On the tenth night, all the moving parts came together as the owl left to begin its hunt.

밤의 끝, 제스 핀들레이(캐나다)의 작품. 특별상: 시민이 뽑은 상 부문 가작. 유령 같은 가면올빼미(원숭이올빼미)가 캐나다 밴쿠버 외곽의 들판에서 사냥을 하기 위해 버려진 헛간의 건초 다락 창문에서 나온다. 제스는 올빼미의 습관을 이해하기 위해 며칠 동안 조용히 올빼미를 관찰했다. 그는 올빼미가 헛간 밖으로 날아갈 때 섬광을 발동시키는 보이지 않는 광선을 설치했다. 동시에 저속 셔터로 인해 구름과 헛간에 주변 빛이 비춰졌다. 열흘째 되는 날 밤, 올빼미가 사냥을 시작하자 움직이는 모든 부분이 하나로 모였다.

3. Whiteout, Michel d'Oultremont's Image. Highly Commended, Special Award: People's Choice. A stoat sits up and observes its territory as it blends perfectly into a snowy landscape in Belgium. Michel had been looking for stoats in the snow for many years. The magic of snowfall fascinates Michel every winter. He wanted to take a photograph that showed how the stoats blend in with the whiteness of the landscape. He’d seen a few in Switzerland but never in his native Belgium. Then, finally his dream came true. He lay in the snow with a white camouflage net covering all but his lens. This curious stoat came out of its snowy hole and sat up from time to time, observing its territory just before setting off to hunt.

화이트아웃, 미셸 두털몽(벨기에)의 작품. 특별상: 시민이 뽑은 상 부문 가작. 족제비 한 마리가 벨기에의 눈 덮인 풍경에 완벽하게 어우러져 앉아 자신의 영역을 관찰하고 있다. 미셸은 오랫동안 눈 속에서 족제비를 찾아왔다. 매년 겨울철 눈의 마법은 미셸을 매료시킨다. 그는 족제비가 풍경의 하얀색에 어떻게 어우러지는지 보여주는 사진을 찍고 싶었다. 스위스에서는 몇 마리 봤지만 고향 벨기에에서는 본 적이 없었다. 그러다 마침내 그의 꿈이 이루어졌다. 그는 렌즈만 제외한 모든 것을 덮은 흰색 위장망을 쓰고 눈 속에 누워 있었다. 이 호기심 많은 족제비는 눈 덮인 굴에서 나와 때때로 앉아 사냥을 떠나기 직전 자신의 영역을 관찰했다.

4. Earth and Sky, Francisco Negroni's Image. Highly Commended, Special Award: People's Choice. A double lenticular cloud is illuminated at nightfall by the lava emitted from the Villarrica volcano, Chile. Villarrica is in the town of Pucón in the south of Chile. It’s one of the country’s most active volcanoes and last erupted in 2015. Francisco takes regular trips to Villarrica to monitor its activity. On this visit, he stayed nearby for 10 nights. He says every trip is “quite an adventure – never knowing what the volcano might surprise you with”. Some nights are calm, others furious as in this photograph, where the brightness of the crater illuminates the night sky.

대지와 하늘, 프란시스코 네그로니(칠레)의 작품. 특별상: 시민이 뽑은 상 부문 가작. 칠레 비야리카 화산에서 분출된 용암이 해질녘에 이중 렌즈구름을 비추고 있다. 비야리카는 칠레 남부 푸콘 마을에 있다. 이 화산은 칠레에서 가장 활동적인 화산 중 하나이며, 마지막 분화는 2015년이었다. 프란시스코는 비야리카의 활동을 관찰하기 위해 정기적으로 이곳을 방문한다. 이번 방문에서 그는 근처에서 10박을 머물렀다. 그는 모든 여행이 "화산이 어떤 놀라움으로 당신을 놀라게 할지 결코 알 수 없는, 꽤 큰 모험"이라고 말한다. 어떤 밤은 고요하고, 이 사진처럼 분화구의 밝은 빛이 밤하늘을 밝히는 것처럼 격렬하다.

5. Spiked, David Northall's Image. Highly Commended, Special Award: People's Choice. A bloodied yet determined honey badger returns to finish off a Cape porcupine, which earlier had tried to defend itself. Found throughout Botswana, honey badgers are famously ferocious. They often chase animals many times their own size. This honey badger got an unpleasant surprise when it attacked the normally nocturnal Cape porcupine. The badger grabbed the porcupine’s right leg. In defence, the porcupine repeatedly backed into its attacker, piercing it with many quills. During a lull in the attack, the porcupine managed to shuffle away, its leg badly damaged. After a short retreat, the bloodied badger returned. It finished off the porcupine under a bush close to the original attack then dragged it into its underground den.

가시가 박힌, 데이비드 노솔(영국)의 작품. 특별상: 시민이 뽑은 상 부문 가작. 피를 흘리면서도 결의에 찬 벌꿀오소리(라텔)가 이전에 자신을 방어하려고 시도했던 케이프고슴도치(케이프호저)를 끝내기 위해 돌아온다. 보츠와나 전역에서 발견되는 벌꿀오소리는 사나운 것으로 유명하다. 그들은 종종 자신보다 몇 배나 큰 동물을 쫓는다. 이 벌꿀오소리는 일반적으로 야행성인 케이프호저(Cape Porcupine)를 공격했을 때 불쾌한 놀라움을 느꼈다. 오소리는 고슴도치의 오른쪽 다리를 움켜쥐었다. 방어를 위해 고슴도치는 반복적으로 공격자에게 후퇴하여 많은 가시로 공격자를 찔렀다. 공격이 잠잠해지는 동안 고슴도치는 다리를 심하게 다친 채 도망갔다. 잠시 후퇴한 후 피투성이 오소리가 돌아왔다. 그 오소리는 원래 공격에 가까운 덤불 아래에서 고슴도치를 죽인 다음 지하 굴로 끌고갔다.
