Anton Webern (1883-1945) - Langsamer Satz (11:37 min.)
**Langsamer Satz** (Slow Movement) is a single-movement string quartet composition by Anton Webern, completed in 1905 during his studies with Arnold Schoenberg.[1][3]
## Composition Background
Webern, aged 21, wrote the piece amid romantic inspiration from hiking with his cousin Wilhelmine Mörtl, whom he later married; diary entries describe ecstatic love filling the universe, evoking influences like Schoenberg's *Verklärte Nacht*. Intended as the first movement of a full quartet, it remained unfinished and was lost until rediscovered in the early 1960s by scholars Hans and Rosaleen Moldenhauer in an Austrian attic. Premiered publicly in 1962 by the University of Washington String Quartet in Seattle, it reflects Webern's early post-Romantic style before his atonal turn.[2][3][5]
## Musical Characteristics
Marked *Langsam, mit bewegtem Ausdruck* (Slow, with moving expression), the roughly 8-minute work follows sonata form in C minor (or E-flat major per some sources), blending Brahmsian rhetoric and sonority with innovative effects like tremolo sul ponticello. It features chromatic tonality, sweeping melodies, dramatic turmoil, yearning, and tranquil lyricism across four sections plus coda, showcasing contrapuntal skill amid rich harmonies.[3][4][5][1]
