29) 3/28 Travel to Happiness - Alcobaca - A Place Filled with Tragic Love
At 3:15 PM, leaving Obidos behind, we drove about 30 km and arrived at the Alcobaca Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site, at 4 PM. The navigation system in the car always led us to the wrong places. The country roads were not well signposted. After wandering for a while, we met an elderly man and asked for directions. Perhaps due to the language barrier, he offered to guide us himself by riding in our car. Indeed, the friendliness of the Portuguese people proved to be worthy of their reputation as a top tourist nation. We visited this place because it is home to the Santa Maria Cistercian Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site established in 1152. Inside this building are the tombs of Pedro I, the tragic hero of a love story, and his lover Ines de Castro, as well as cloisters, chapels, a large kitchen, churches, and the Renaissance-era Misericordia (the monks' resting area), all well-preserved in a beautiful monastery. Then, at 5 PM, we departed for the western coastal town of Nazare.

The tragic love between Inés and Pedro touches our heartstrings . Prince Pedro loved the daughter of a Spanish Galician nobleman , and despite the opposition of his father , Afonso IV , he fell in love and gave birth to three children . Concerned about Galician ' s influence , the Castile side of Poltucal put pressure on Afonso IV to kill Ines . As soon as he ascended the throne with Pedro , he killed everyone involved in the murder of Ines . Here in the Great Temple of Alcobaca , two people are sleeping forever . They will still be sharing love together in this temple today . ( The photo is of King Pedro , Ines , and their three children )
