Wenzao Language College run by the Order of St Ursula officially gained university status on last week.
The only college in Taiwan dedicated to languages, Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages joins Fu Jen Catholic University in northern Taipei and Providence University in central Taichung as the island’s third accredited Catholic universities.
At the official opening in Kaohsiung city last week, the university’s new president Professor Lucia Lin pledged to improve academic quality and to establish closer ties with Catholic universities overseas.
City mayor Chen Chu praised Wenzao’s “leadership in foreign language education in southern Taiwan” and its role in promoting international exchanges in Kaohsiung.
Named after the first Chinese Bishop Lo Wenzao (1616-91), the university, established in 1966, is among nearly 90 Ursuline schools, colleges and other educational institutions in over 30 countries around the world.
It has 9,000 students, about three quarters of whom are female.
