Nearly 90 small cities and counties that are in danger of extinction due to population decrease have been designated as "depopulation areas" for intensive support from the central government, the interior ministry said Monday.
월요일 행정안전부는 인구감소로 인한 이구소멸의 위험이 있는 90개에 가까운  소규모 시군이 중앙정부가 강력한 지원을 하는 “인구감소지역” 으로 지정했다고 말했다.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety said that it has designated 89 cities, counties and wards across the country as depopulation areas and a relevant public notice is to take effect Tuesday.
행정안전부는 전국적으로 89개 시, 군, 구를 인구감소지역으로 지정하고 관련된 공식적으로 화요일부터 발효한다고 말했다.

The government plans to provide intensive administrative and financial support to help the concerned areas escape from their crisis of extinction, the ministry said.
행정안전부는 정부가 해당지역이 인구 소멸위기에서 벗어나도록 행정적, 금융적 지원을 할 계획임을 밝혔다.

 
It is the first time for the nation to declare specific regions in danger of becoming extinct due to population decline. South Korea has been struggling with a steady decline in childbirths and the overcrowded capital region, which have left many non-capital regions struggling to overcome depopulation.
우리나라가 인구감소로 소멸위험이 있는 지역을 발표한 것은 이번이 처음이다. 한국은 비수도권의 많은 지역이 인구감소와 싸우고 있는 한편 인구 과밀지역인 수도권도 출생률의 지속적 감소와 싸우고 있다.

The designation of depopulation areas came after the Special Act on Balanced National Development was revised late last year and its enforcement decree was amended in June.
지난해 말 국가균형발전특별법이 개정된 후 인구감소지역이 지정되었고 시행규칙은 6월에 개정되었다.

The government-designated depopulation areas include 16 cities and counties each from the southwestern province of South Jeolla and the southeastern province of North Gyeongsang.
정부가 지정한 인구감소지역 은 전라남도와 경상북도의 16개 시도를 포함하고있다.

The list also includes 12 from northeastern Gangwon Province, 11 from southeastern South Gyeongsang Province, 10 from southwestern North Jeolla, nine from central South Chungcheong Province and six from central North Chungcheong Province.
이 표는 북동쪽 강원도에 12 곳, 남동쪽 경상남도 11곳, 남서쪽 전라북도 10곳, 중부의 충청남도 9곳, 중부의 충청북도 6곳 등을 포함하고있다.

 
In the capital region, four counties ― Gapyeong, Yeoncheon, Ganghwa and Ongjin ― were included. Three wards in Busan and two wards in Daegu were also listed.
수도권에는 가평, 연천, 강화, 옹진 등 4개 군이 포함되어 있다. 부산의 3개구와 대구의 2개구 또한 포함되었다.

 
"The designation of depopulation areas is a new starting point for the government's efforts to solve the problem of population decline," Minister of the Interior and Safety Jeon Hae-cheol said.
“인구감소지역지정은 정부의 인구감소문제를 해결하기위한 정부노력의 출발점이다.” 라고 전해철 행정안전부 장관이 말했다.

 
The ministry said it will help the depopulation areas establish and implement customized policies to escape their population crisis.
행정안전부는 인구감소지역의 설정과 해당지역의 인구위기를 해결할 수 있는 맞춤정책수립을 지원할 것이라고 말했다.

In addition, the government's Local Extinction Response Fund set at 1 trillion won (US$845) annually for a period of 10 years will be intensively extended to the depopulation areas to help them create more jobs, induce young people and increase their living population, the ministry said. (Yonhap)

더불어 10년간 매년 1조가 책정된 지역멸종 대책기금이 인구감소지역에서 더 많은 일자리를 만들고 젊은이들을 불러들이고 거주인구를 늘릴 수 있게 강력한 지원을 할 것이라고 행정안전부는 말했다. (연합)
