▣ Six in the fifth line : There is game in the field ;
it is advantageous to make a declaration(or catch it) without blame.
Let the eldest son lead army.
If younger sons carry corpses in carts, persistence brings misfortune.
[Explanation]
Six in the fifth line[六五,육오] means there is wild game in the field,
If there is game, it is advantageous to issue a declaration/ mission(辭命,사명) and capture it,
which will bring no blame.
However, the eldest son must lead the army.
A younger son(or lesser men) might end up carrying corpses in a cart.
Even if one remains upright and firm, it will lead to misfortune.
[Commentary]
Six in the fifth line[六五,육오] is the position of a king who is gentle and yielding,
yet centered and balanced.
The enemy(禽,금 - game) invaded the territory(田,전 - field) of a gentle nation first[田有禽,전유금].
It is beneficial to capture them[執言,집언], and there is no blame [无咎,무구].
The gentle king did not incite war, nor does he have the capacity as a general to wage war
himself ; thus, full authority must be entrusted to a strong eldest son
Otherwise, if there are many younger brothers beneath him interfering, power struggles ensue,
leading to situations where corpses are loaded onto carts
Inferring from this, war requires a valid justification,
and appointing a competent general capable of waging war is crucial.
Since the strong line 2 below responds to the gentle line 5,
full authority could be cetrusted to the eldest son[長子,장자. line 2, ☳,(震)/Zhen].
Jeong Yak-yong (Dasan) viewed '禽(금 - game) not sa a simple wild animal,
but as a wild pig (☵ - 坎,감) that suddenly ran onto the field,
asserting that it must be driven away.
Cheng Yi secures evidence through historical precedents,
noting that Emperor Wu of Han and Qin Shi Huang searched forests and hunted wild
beasts during the farming seasons of spring and autumn.
Additionally, '利執言(이집언 - It is advantageous to issue a declaration)' is viewed
as the sovereign's 'declaration of war' to capture the enemy.
This applies when the Shi Hexagram(師卦,사괘 - Army) changes into the Zhongshui-kan
Hexagram(重水坎卦,중수감괘 / Hexagram 29).
On the other hand, line 5 is also interpreted through the eastern expedition of King Wen,
and the civil rebellion caused by King Wu's younger brothers after his death.
King Wu, having completed the three-year mourning period for his father King Wen,
carried out an eastern expedition when the tyranny of King Zhou of Shang reached its peak.
This can be seen as aligned with Confucius's commentary :
"The eldest son leading the army well is because he acted in accordance with the Middle Way
Furthermore, after King Wu died and his son King Cheng ascended the throne,
King Wu's younger brother, the Duke of Zhou, served as regent.
However, his younger brothers Guan Shu and Cai Shu suspected that the Duke of Zhou would
harm the young King Cheng, and caused the Duke of Zhou to hide away in the east.
When King Cheng opened the Metal-Bound Casket(金騰,금등) and cleared his suspicions,
he recalled the Duke of Zhou ; subsequently, Guan Shu and Cai Shu joined Wu Geng
(son of King Zhou) to incite rebellion during Kinf Wu's mourning period.
This very event provided the pretext for 'marching to war during mourning while carrying
King Wu's spirit tablet'.
Placing the ancestral tablet on a cart signified that King Wen was spiritually alive,
taking the formal stance that King Wu, as crown prince, was joining his father's
personal campaign.
Meauwhile, the Duke of Zhou gathered feudal lords, made a grand proclamation(大誥,대고),
suppressed the rebellious forces, executed Guan Shu and Wu Geng, and exiled Cai Shu.
Confucius also commented on this 'marching during mourning with a spirit tablet'
and the rebellion of KIng Wu's younger brothers, stating that it was improper :
"A younger son carrying corpses in a cart is due to imprpper authorization
In Silrok(True Records), '禽(금 - game) is viewed as 'an invader,'
emphasizing that one must not separate justification/cause from military leadership(軍師,군사).
