The GSX-R750 was built to compete in the various worldwide championships as well as to be used on the street. It is considered as one the very first street-legal racers, there had been a number of sports machines but the GSX-R750 was something else. It was a revolutionary motorcycle with specifications like over 100 hp power output, less than 180 kg dry mass, 55° leaning angle, lightweight alloy double-cradle perimeter frame, 18-inch wheels and streamlined design based on the factory Formula 1 and Endurance racers. The GSX-R750 entered the market in March 1985. There's not many bikes out there in mint condition, most of them are ridden very hard and seen their best days. Nevertheless the evolution of modern sports bikes started with the GSX-R750. It's a real classic. |

Trying to make the bike less nervous, the standard 1986 model received 25 mm longer swing arm and standard radial tyres like the previous limited version GSX-R750R (Racing) model. Part from that, the model remained basically unchanged from 1985 except for a modified lower fairing. The distinct dual headlights were upgraded to 65/50 watts. Colors: White/Blue, Black/Red. |

The street-legal limited version GSX-R750R model was introduced for 1986. The basic specifications of the bike were the same as for the standard model (except for the seat height) but the the ”double R” model offered some interesting goodies that improved an already great bike. The gun-coat engine finish, gold-plated chain, blue-coated wheels and two sets of racing numbers is not all. The 1986 GSX-R750R offered even a new electrically activated front suspension system (NEAS), 310 mm floating front brake discs, steering damper, racing type adjustable clutch-lever, dry clutch, single racing seat, remote rear damper reservoir, amber halogen head lights and more. Engine type: R705 The picture below is from a West German sales brochure. The production model didn't actually look like the this. It's a prototype. |

The styling went smooth and curvaceous with this model with almost everything being new - 73.0 x 44.7mm short-stroke motor, thinner piston rings, bigger main bearings, bigger valves, new high-lift camshaft, 36 mm contant-velocity semi-flatslide carbs and up rated suspension, wheels and tyres. All this produced 112 hp at 11,000 rpm to propel a dry weight of 195 kg. Unfortunately, it lost significant ground clearance (via the exhaust) and the adoption of 17" wheels which offered only a slim margin of error. Every detail of the chassis and engine of the GSX-R down to the single bolt was reevaluated for the new 1988 model. The fairing was redesigned for 5.7% less frontal projection and 11% lower drag. The wheelbase at 1400mm made the GSX-R the most compact bike in the class. The lightweight aluminium alloy frame incorporated 45mm box tube main section and the cast swig arm pivot resulted in 60% more ridity. Front fork stanchion tubes were increased to 43mm diameter with variable damper adjuster type inner rods. The back end featured full floating suspension with new linkage and needle bearing for smoothness. Opposed 4 piston brake calipers, new weight-saving hollow-typecast wheels, and wide Michelin radial tyres became new standard equipment. The distinctive air-cooled with SACS engine received larger diameter oil hose and less restrictive joints for 20% increase in the coolant flow and the large 15 row cooler improved the cooling efficiency by 48%. The red zone started at 13,000 rpm. Engine bore and stroke changed from the previous 70 x 48.7mm to shorter stroke 73 x 44.7mm to reduce reciprocating motion mechanical loss. The new Slingshot carburetors were equipped with lightweight throttle valves for increased throttle responsiveness. Another important addition was the incorporation of SACI (Suzuki Condensed Air Intake) system bringing fresh air from ducts on the front of the fairing to the carburetor intake for maximizing cylinder charging efficiency. 500 limited edition (some claim 1000) GSX-R750R ( the 'Double R') serving as ready-to-race platform was released to Japanese market. The newly redesigned engine reverted to the original long stroke (70 x 48.7mm) configuration. Crankcase, crankshaft connecting rods and clutch were among the critical areas receiving more attention necessary for the race duty. The 'Double R' also received new 40mm Slingshot carburetor and 4-into-1 exhaust pipe as well as close ratio gearbox, rear swing arm with sub frame, new aerodynamic fiber with large air intake duct, solo seating with race number box and 19 liter aluminium fuel tank as standard equipment. The dry weight measured, 187kg. Type: GR79B Engine type: R714 |

New liquid-cooled engine debuted for the 1992-year's GSX-R750WN (W meant Water-cooling) to match and reduce the increasing heat under severe racing conditions. However, the invaluable seven years of oil-cooling experience was not abandoned completely and the new engine featured the best of both worlds: oil injection piston cooling and water-cooled oil-cooler were among the features incorporated into the new engine to achieve compactness and reliability, enabling cylinder pitch reduction by 10mm and crankcase width by 57mm. Headlight cover became cheaper/lighter plastic rather than the expensive glass of the previous model. New 5-sided aluminium pipe frame with sand-casted steering head section and cast swing arm pivot increased the torsional resistance by 24%. The new monocoque swing arm was pressed arms of asymmetrical design working with new link type rear suspension. In isolation, a good bike but the other manufacturers had better bikes to offer. Dry weight was still 208 kg and power was up to 118 hp at 11,500 rpm. |

Electronic fuel injection appeared for the first time on a GSX-R with large 46 mm throttle bodies together with a steering damper as standard, a five mm shorter wheelbase, altered internal and external gear ratios, altered chassis, suspension and brakes, internal engine mods and massive airbox. Power was up to 135 hp. An absolute gem to ride. Suzuki made a class-leading sportsbike even better. Two-stage system monitored water and intake air temperatures, environmental and intake air pressures, throttle position and engine rpm to optimal air/fuel mix for both low and high rpm situations. CDI ignition coil was adopted and internal engine parts saw further weight reduction and the camshaft position use of close ratio gearbox and strengthening of rear shock mount. | |

2000—2004
2000 Suzuki year code: Y
The second revelation! Everything was new on the 2000-year's GSX-R750Y (16th model version). The engine and the chassis have been totally redesigned. The bodywork was more aerodynamic, 30 mm lower in overall height, longer swingarm, longer wheelbase, 4-piston brakes (rather than the 6-piston of before), smaller rear rim (back to 5.5"), shorter and narrower engine with redesigned fuel-injection and a huge 13 kg lighter (166 kg). The engine features 12 degree intake valves and 13 degree exhaust valves, both one degree narrower for even more compact combustion area, enabling remarkably high 12.0 compression ratio. The cylinder head front to back length is reduced 7,5 mm and the head cover is lightweight magnesium. Cylinders are one piece with the upper crankcase for both strength and weight reduction. And the crankcase continues with the distinct three-piece design. All these contribute to an engine 15 mm shorter in length and 8 mm narrower in width and 5 kg lighter, achieving the goal of compact lightweight design. Feeding optimal fuel to the engine is the new electronic fuel injection system with double valve rider controlled throttle valve and the electronically controlled valve: increasing torque and power as well as increasing combustion efficiency that contributes to cleaner exhaust emission as well. The new mainframe is further lightened and the swing arm has been lengthened 20 mm while the wheelbase is kept at 1400 mm for better handling and traction control. |
