🛐✝️💂교황청 스위스 근위대(Pontifical Swiss Guard), 또는 단순히 스위스 근위대(Swiss Guard)라고도 불리는 이 부대는 교황과 바티칸 시국 내 사도궁을 보호하기 위해 교황청에서 운영하는 무장 의장대이자 경호부대이다. 1506년 율리우스 2세 교황 치하에서 창설된 이 부대는 현재까지 지속적으로 활동하고 있는 가장 오래된 군사 부대 중 하나이며, 때때로 "세계에서 가장 작은 군대"라고 불리기도 한다. 스위스 근위대는 르네상스시대의 제복을 입고 있으며, 이 제복은 붉은색, 진한 파란색, 노란색 줄무늬 튜닉, 깃털 장식이 높은 투구, 그리고 할버드와 같은 전통 무기로 구성된다. 근위병들은 실용적인 복장과 현대식 화기를 착용하고 경호 임무를 수행한다. 1981년 교황 요한 바오로 2세 암살 시도 이후, 스위스 근위대는 의례 외적인 역할에 더욱 중점을 두고, 비정규군 방첩, 특공대식 기습공격, 저격수 대응 전술, 대테러, 근접 전투, 폭탄 해체 및 처리, 고위 인사 경호, 인질 구출, 인적 정보 수집, 의료 후송, 정찰, 전술 운전, 전술 의료 서비스, 전술 소형 화기 속사 등 다양한 분야에서 훈련을 강화해왔다. 스위스 근위대는 엘리트 군사 부대로 여겨지며, 선발 과정이 매우 까다롭다. 지원자는 19세에서 30세 사이의 미혼 스위스 가톨릭 남성으로, 키 174cm(5피트 8.5인치) 이상이어야 하며, 스위스 군대에서 기초훈련을 수료하고 전문 자격증 또는 고등학교 졸업장을 소지해야 한다. 2024년 기준, 근위대원은 135명이다. 스위스 근위대의 보안 임무는 교황의 사도적 순방, 교황궁인 카스텔 간돌포, 그리고 교황좌가 공석일 때는 추기경단까지 포함한다. 근위대는 바티칸시국의 경비를 담당하지만, 시국의 전반적인 안보와 법 집행은 별개의 조직인 바티칸시국 헌병대(Corps of Gendarmerie of Vatican City)가 맡고 있다.
