SPIEGEL ONLINE: Mr. Nowitzki, how is your Achilles heel?
Dirk Nowitzki: Not all that great. I thought I had overcome those problems.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: You already missed two months last season because of it.
Nowitzki: Yes, nowadays I have to do a lot more rehab, be more careful with my calf
and keep stretching my muscles. I've gotten used to the fact that
even though you have to practice a lot you also have to pay attention
to a lot of things off the court.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: What do you mean?
Nowitzki: Cold baths, yoga, stretching. All this is now part of my daily training routine.
It sounds crazy but when you're my age you almost put in more work off the court than on it.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: What are your plans for your free time?
Nowitzki: I have a few sponsored events in Germany and then I'm traveling with my family
to Europe and Africa, where a large part of my wife's family lives. We're taking the kids with us.
And I'll also visit my home, Würzburg.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: When does the relevant part of preseason begin?
The summer league has already started.
Nowitzki: Yes, but we don't send our good players there. We're on vacation till August,
and the team will prepare together at the end of September.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: The season already starts on October 20th this year.
Nowitzki: Yeah, they've moved up the season this year. The league is trying to stretch the season so that we don't have to play back-to-back games as often as we usually do.
However that robs us of one week of training camp which could be difficult considering
how long and intense a season can be.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Are you going to practice with your individual coach Holger Geschwindner?
Nowitzki: Yes, I'll do that in August. I obviously have a better environment in the USA
because we can push each other. It's a bit dull out here. Sometimes I spend two hours alone
in the fitness room then two hours alone with Holger.
Over there I have teammates that keep pushing me.
That's why I haven't yet decided how I'm going to divide the time for my preparation.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: The competition in the Western Conference has spent the off-season
making a lot of spectacular trades.
Nowitzki: Yes, that's extreme what the teams are currently doing.
Jimmy Butler to the Timberwolves, and now Paul George is going to OKC.
Paul Milsap is also leaving the East and going to Denver.
It's insane what teams are doing to catch up to Golden State and Cleveland.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: What are your goals for the upcoming season?
Nowitzki: Our goal is to make the playoffs of course but that's going to be extremely difficult.
We're currently trying to keep Nerlens Noel who is an important part of our offense.
But it won't be easy to make it in the West.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Do your hopes rest on a rookie?
Nowitzki: Yes, that's correct. We've drafted Dennis Smith jr. This made us super happy.
He's very athletic and explosive. We all hope he's going to be succesful.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: He's already getting compared to Westbrook.
Nowitzki: Yes but you should be careful there. That's an insane comparison.
He averaged a triple double last season, a 55-year-old record by Oscar Robertson.
That's incredible. Those comparisons are probably too early, but we expect a lot from him.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: You mentioned Westbrook's run. This past season was full of records.
James averaged a historic triple double in the plays offs, Harden had the first 50+ 15+ 15+ triple double. Is this a golden generation of players? Or do you have another explanation?
Nowitzki: I think the league and the game have changed.
There are a lot more dangerous 3-point shooters, there is a lot more space.
Nowadays it's a lot easier to get a triple double than 20 years ago
when I went from Würzburg to the NBA. Back then the zone was always packed,
it was filled with muscular centers and power forwards.
That almost doesn't exist anymore, centers now need to be able to do more than just run,
they need to be able to shoot from outside. The game has completely changed.
Everything is much faster, everyone can now easily make 3-pointers so
when you have a guard on your team who can shoot well and has good court vision then
it's obviously easier to get a triple double.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: How do you feel about the league's current situation? People in Europe got the impression that the Cavs' and Warriors' dominance hurt the NBA's image.
Nowitzki: It wasn't very good for the regular season and the first playoff rounds because it takes away the suspense. When we went to the playoffs in 2003 we won the first two rounds
after seven games and lost the Conference Finals after six games.
Every round was thrilling, that's missing these days. But the finals made up for a lot of this.
Even if there only were five games, the athleticism, the outside shots - it was insane.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: It could have been closer if Durant hadn't made that 3-point shot
at the end of game 3.
Nowitzki: Yes, exactly. It was closer than the final result suggests.
But when you look at the viewing figures: they had the highest tv ratings since the 1998 finals
with Michael Jordan and Karl Malone. That definitely shows that people want to see that.
The finals were incredible, definitely the best finals I've ever watched.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: How do you feel when you watch the playoffs at home on your couch?
Are you more relaxed than at the start of your career?
Nowitzki: It's kinda difficult. I always want to get to the playoffs, that's always our goal.
When I was injured at the start of the season we quickly had 18 or 19 losses.
When you're that far behind in the West it's almost impossible.
We fought hard to make up ground but it still hurts.
It's my favorite time of the year, it gets warm, the atmosphere is one of a kind.
Hundreds of fans await you in front of the arena. It's a bitter feeling to not be a part of that.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: You've been in the NBA for almost 20 years now, have been on the court
with countless legends. Is there someone you'd really love to play with again?
Nowitzki: I'm more old school, I really would have loved to play with Kobe or Shaq.
But I was fortunate to almost always be able to play the All Star Game.
There they were then, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett. To be in the same locker room as these guys
that I had admired for a long long time, that was insane.
I'll never forget my first all star game. It was an incredible experience.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: You just mentioned Garnett and Duncan.
Both have now ended their careers and are working as personal coaches.
Garnett even practices with Blake Griffin.
Is that something you would consider once your career is done?
Nowitzki: I think I'll need to back away from the whole business at first.
When everything is over I'll need a break, my kids and my family should be my priority.
But it's clear that I won't be sitting around at home forever, that's too boring.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Do you see yourself moving back to Germany?
Nowitzki: Definitely not in the near future.
The kids were all born in the USA, the biggest one is about to go to kindergarten
and only speaks English. I try to speak German with her sometimes but that's difficult.
My network is in Dallas so I'll plan my future there for now.
