About four months before the upcoming presidential election, voters increasingly disapprove of three key candidates from both the ruling and opposition parties amid constant scandals, doubts and slip-ups.

대통령선거가 4개월 남은 현재 지속적인 스캔들, 의문, 실수 속에 세명의 집권당과 야당의 중요 후보에 대한 반대의견이 증가하고있다.

According to a survey of 1,000 adults nationwide conducted Oct. 19-21 by Gallup Korea, Lee Jae-myung, the ruling Democratic Party of Korea’s sole presidential candidate, marked a 32 percent approval rating. Two opposition party candidates, Hong Joon-pyo and Yoon Seok-youl, received 31 percent and 28 percent approval, respectively.

갤럽 코리아가 10월 19~21일 전국 성인 1,000명을 대상으로한 조사에 의하면 집권당의 단일 대통령후보인 이재명씨는 32%의 지지율을 기록했 다. 두명의 야당후보인 윤석열씨와 홍준표씨는 각각 31%와 28%를 받았다.

Their disapproval ratings, however, were about double their approval ratings. Sixty percent of those polled disapprove of Lee, 59 percent disapprove of Hong and 62 percent disapprove of Yoon.

그러나 반대비율은 찬성비율의 배가 되었다. 이씨에 대한 반대비율은 60% 였고 홍씨는 59%, 윤씨는 62% 였다.

Those who support neither of the two biggest parties have seen a gradual rise in number. The figure stood at 25 percent in the third week of October, a rise of two percentage points from two months ago.

두개의 영대정당을 지지하지않는 사람들도 점진적으로 늘고 있다. 이 숫자는 10월 셋째주에 25%로 2개월 전보다 2% 증가했다.

The polling results reflect voters’ increasing disappointment in the major candidates as they have been mired in various controversies, allegations and slip-ups.

이 조사결과는 주요후보들이 다양한 논란, 혐의, 실수에 관련되면서 유권자들의 실망이 커진 결과이다.

One of the biggest challenges ruling party candidate Lee faces concerns a controversial housing development project in Daejang-dong that he promoted when he was reelected as mayor of Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, in 2014. Questions are being raised as to whether Lee, who had the authority to permit and approve construction work on the project, may have given favors to help some people reap undue profits.

집권당후보 이씨가 직면하고 있는 가장 큰 문제는 2014년 그가 경기도지사로 재선되었을 때 그가 홍보했던 대장동 주택개발 계획에 대한 논란이다. 문제는 이 개발계획의 건설작업을 허가하고 승인할 권리를 가지고 있는 이씨가 일부인사에게 과도한 이익을 주기위해 특혜를 주었는가의 문제이다.

He has also been negatively eval‎uated in terms of morality for his past drunken driving record, abusive language and an alleged affair with an actress.

그는 과거의 음주운전, 쌍욕, 여배우와의 불륜설 등으로 부정적인 도덕성을 평가받아왔다.

Yoon is suspected of being involved in political meddling. He is alleged to have filed a complaint with the prosecution against politicians and journalists linked to the ruling Democratic Party ahead of last year’s general elections.

윤씨는 정치적 간여에 개입한 것이 의심되고 있다. 그는 작년 선거전에 집권당에 관련하여 정치인에 관련된 언론인과 정치인에 대한 검창고발을 사주한 혐의를 받고 있다.

Yoon’s mother-in-law and wife are alleged to have been involved in criminal charges such as stock price manipulation. He has also been under fire for frequent slip-ups. Recently he had to hastily explain remarks in which he seemed to defend a former dictator, President Chun Doo-hwan.

윤씨의 장모와 부인은 주가조작의 혐의를 받고있다. 그 자신도 잦은 실 수로 논란에 휩싸인다. 최근 독재자 전두환 대통령을 옹호하는 듯한 발언에 대해 황급히 해명해야 했다.

Rep. Hong is also not free of criticism over past remarks.

홍준표의원도 과거에 대한 비판에 자유롭지 못하다.

In a book published in 2005, Hong wrote that he had obtained a “piggy stimulant” for a friend who wanted to have sex with a particular woman when he was a college student. He was referring to a livestock drug that induces estrus in pigs used for breeding.

홍씨는 2005년 발행된 책에서 자신이 대학시절 한 친구가 특정한 여인과 잠자리를 같이하기 위해 “돼지발정제”를 구했다는 내용을 기술했다. 그는 돼지의 번식을 위해 발정을 유도하는 가축약을 언급했다.

When he was a presidential candidate for the previous conservative Liberty Korea Party in 2017, he said, “(Washing dishes) was decided by heaven and women should not ask men to do it,” causing a stir.

2017년 지난 선거에서 자유한국당의 대통령후보시절에 “설거지는 하늘이 정하는 것이고 여자는 남자에게 하라고 하면 안된다.” 라고 말해 논란을 일으켰다.

Expectations for an outside candidate are not high either.

다른 후보자들에 대한 기대는 크지않다.

The same pollster showed Sim Sang-jeung from the Justice Party had 24 percent approval against 62 percent disapproval, and Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People Party, had a 19 percent approval rating with 72 percent disapproval.

정의당의 심상정씨는 24%의 지지율과 62%의 반대율을 보였고 국민의 당의 안철수씨는 19%의 지지율과 72%의 반대율을 보였다.

Experts say an election campaign fraught with scandals and allegations without proper pledges may lead to low voter turnout.

전문가들은 적절한 공약이 없고 스캔들과 의혹으로 가득 찬 선거는 낮은 투표율을 보일 수 있다고 말한다.

Eom Kyeong Young, leader of the Zeitgeist Institute, said, “More than 50 percent disapproval ratings for candidates is a dire situation. If this goes on, those who are centrists or the young generations will be more likely to abstain from voting, saying there is no one to vote for.”

자이트가이스트 연구소의 염경영 소장은 “ 후보에 대한 50% 이상의 반대율은 심각한 상황이다. 이대로 간다면 중도주의자난 젊은 세대는 투표할 사람이 없어서 투표를 하지 않을 수 있다.” 고 말했다.

Lee’s approval was relatively high among Democratic Party supporters (69 percent), progressives (56 percent), people in their 40s (47 percent) and voters in the Honam region (46 percent). Honam encompasses Gwangju, South Jeolla Province and North Jeolla Province.

이씨의 지지율은 40대 민주당원(69%), 진보주의자(56%)와 호남(46%)에서 비교적 높다. 호남은 광주, 전라남도와 전라북도를 말한다.

Hong’s popularity was relatively high among People Power Party supporters (45 percent) and conservatives (43 percent), but relatively low among women (24 percent). Yoon’s approval was high among People Power Party supporters (58 percent) and conservatives (43 percent). Forty-nine percent of voters in their 60s and older approve of Yoon, but only 9 percent of those in their 20s do.

홍씨의 지지율은 국민의 힘당(45%), 보수(43%)에서 높고 여성(24%)에서 비교적 낮다. 윤씨의 지지율은 국민의 힘당(58%), 보수(43%)에서 높다. 60대와 그 이상에서 49%의 지지율을 보이지만 20대에서는 9%의 지지율을 보인다.
