Regular Fit Vs Slim Fit Shirts - What's the Difference?
Long gone are the days when men only had one fitting option for dress shirts, although here at Tapered we specialise in muscle fit shirts. The reality is that men appreciate different types of fit.
Having more options leads to a greater choice for styles. Yet, you might find yourself overwhelmed by the range of options for shirts. In other blogs we have discussed the difference between muscle fit vs slim fit and tailored fit vs slim fit shirts.

The main difference between regular fit vs slim fit is the how it's cut and fits the body. Regardless of the type of garment, slim fit is cut closer to the body to provide a much more snug to the contours of the body than a regular fit. Regular fit is typically designed for the masses so is typically much looser around the arms, waist, shoulders chest and hips.
But let's do a deep dive on the difference between two similar (but very different) fitting options
– regular fit vs slim fit.
What Is Regular Fit?
Regular Fit Shirts
Regular fit shirts is one of the most traditional shirt fit. The cut is designed for the masses and doesn’t take into consideration a mans build. The slender or athletic build won’t find this type of fit suitable.
It’s often looser on the body, providing a comfortable, classic look. A regular fit has an emphasis on comfort and function rather than appearance. It typically contains extra material in length, and does not taper down the body from chest to the waist. The problem with this being when tucked in creates extra bunching around the waist.
On the other hand, the excess fabric and generous room in the arm hole provides freedom of movement and comfort. As mens fashion progresses and demand being higher for better fitting clothing, the regular fit gets a bad reputation for looking sloppy and baggy. With the variety in shirt fittings nowadays you can understand why this is the case.
Is Regular Fit Baggy?
Regular fit shirts tend to be baggy. If you have an oval body shape or a wider midsection then a regular fit shirt is the choice to go for. It's not particularly fitted in any area so you will find that a regular fit shirt is baggy in the chest, shoulders, arms and waist.
What is The Difference Between Classic Fit and Regular Fit Shirts?
The distinction between classic fit and regular fit shirts is found in the variations in their cuts, which cater to different preferences in men's dress shirts. In classic fit shirts, a more generous cut is featured, allowing extra room in the chest, waist, and sleeves for a comfortable, relaxed fit. Those who favour extra room and a slightly looser fit may find this style suitable.
Conversely, regular fit shirts are designed with a more tailored silhouette, featuring slightly tapered sides and a more fitted waist. A balance between comfort and style is offered by these shirts, resulting in their popularity for everyday wear. A professional and polished appearance is provided by both styles, despite the differences in their cuts. Bear in mind a regular fit shirt is still pretty baggy but just a tighter cut than classic fit shirts.
How shirts should fit, White Fitted Shirt by Tapered Menswear
What is Standard Fit Shirt?
A standard fit shirt is exactly the same as a regular fit shirt. It is the most traditional shirt fit. The cut is designed for the masses and doesn’t take into consideration a mans build.
What's the Difference Between Regular fit and Standard Fit?
As mentioned previously there isn't a difference between regular fit and standard fit. These two are used interchangeably and relate to anything from t-shirts to dress shirts.
What is a Slim Fit Shirt?
Slim fit shirt is exactly what it says it is – slim fitting. They’re designed to fit close to the body, usually by tapering the cut through the midsection and waist. However, this also results in there being very little room in the upper body, something that will come as a hindrance to those with a more muscular build.
How Do Slim Fit Shirts Fit?
A slim fit shirt is also more tailored (fitted) around the arms than standard fitting shirts, but can surprisingly be very baggy around the waist.
Is slim fit meant to be tight?
One of the most notable issues with a slim fit shirt is the fact that there’s usually no stretch to the material, so they’re either going to be very tight or too baggy; there’s unfortunately no middle ground.
Who should wear slim fit?
In short, slim fitting shirts are ideal for those who are just that – slim – but they’re definitely not the best choice for those with a more athletic build or someone who has a larger midriff. .
