Finally tonight, rules to drive by. Commandments actually, ten of them, issued today, believe it or not, by the Vatican. The cardinal who wrote the rules noted that the donkey carts in which biblical figures traveled have been replaced by super-fast cars. No disputing that. So, how should we handle those super-fast cars? ABC's David Wright runs down the Ten Car Commandments.
Think of them as the ultimate rules on the road. They may not have come with all the fire and brimstone of the Cecil B. DeMille version, no stone tablets today. But the Vatican's new Ten Commandments, officially called "Guidelines for Pastoral Care on the Roads," are a reminder to love thy neighbor even when he cuts you off on the highway.
Top on the list : naturally, thou shalt not kill. Be courteous, upright and prudent. Thou shalt not drink and drive.
"Being behind the wheel of a car can also be a moral action. When you're...you are taking not just your life in your hands, but your soul in your hands as well."
The Vatican says cars should not be an expression of power and domination, nor should they provide an occasion for sin - a thought perhaps aimed more at the backseat than the front. The Vatican says thou shalt support the families of accident victims and bring guilty motorists and their victims together. Never mind that ambulance chasing lawyers already do that. The Vatican wants to promote forgiveness, not massive financial settlements.
The church cautions against impoliteness, rude gestures and blasphemy behind the wheel, urging drivers to make the sign of the cross before setting out and even to say a rosary along the way.
"The Pope needs to stay in Rome and mind his business. He ain't driving nothing."
But today, many drivers suggested the Vatican not stop at just ten commandments.
"The eleventh commandment should be "Thou shalt not talk on your cell phone while driving."
"Do not tailgate.
"Thou shalt get in my way."
"Thou unto others as you would do have them do unto you."
"The golden rule."
"I mean it."
If more people follow them, perhaps the road to salvation would have a few less traffic jams.
