Whom do you love?
John13:37“Peter said to Him, ‘Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your sake.’”
I will go with You wherever You go. There will be no such vain promise as this, for this promise comes from one’s own position. Peter assured that He would follow Jesus even if he had to die with Him, but he denied three times that he was one of His disciples before the rooster crowed. We know that to follow Jesus to the end does not depend on one’s own mind or resolution.
Before the figure of Jesus who becomes so different than usual in our ideal or dream, it is impossible for us to follow Jesus without any difference. The figure of Jesus who was arrested and led impotently was not the figure of Jesus that Peter expected as usual. In usual Jesus brought alive the dead and also made the strong wind be still only with His word. He was the Son of God who was much greater than the prophet Elisha who made the army of Aram blinded and surrendered.
It was not Jesus Himself who Peter loved but his own dream and vision. “Simon Peter answered and said, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’” Matt.16:16 His great confession was hiding his human thought considering the things of men instead of the things of God. Our confession is also including the human thoughts.
When Peter struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear, he was confident of their victory believing in Jesus. Jesus in whom Peter believed could bring twelve legions of angels and cast away the large crowd who came to arrest Himself. ‘Did you come to arrest our Teacher knowing who He is?’ Peter was not afraid of the crowd. However, Jesus went forward to let Himself arrested and take Him away.
Jesus, who was standing in the trial court of Philate, got contempt and disdain in a lonely and miserable figure, which was not the figure of Jesus whom His disciples thought. It is difficult for us to think Jesus who was under the contempt and disdain instead of exercising His great power. It is much more difficult for us to follow Jesus bearing our cross of contempt and disdain for the sake of God.
We must first of all proceed to dying with Christ in order to participate in the glory of resurrection. “though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.” Heb.5:8 There is no way to be perfect without the suffering of the cross. “Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him.” Rom.6:8
Those who love Jesus in truth love not only Jesus who has power and authority but also the miserable Jesus who was suffered to te judged before Pilate and the crowd. The believers always follow Jesus to be with Him, even if the way to follow Him leads them to the suffering of cross. They loved Jesus not because of their dream but because of Jesus Himself, whatever Jesus is.
Nowadays, many Christians have their own portrait of Jesus and follow Him loving it. They reject the different figure of Jesus with their own. Peter spent three years with Jesus and learned friendship, which made him follow to the house of the high priest, because of his friendship and not of his love toward such figure of Jesus. The real Christians love Jesus not only for their dream but also even to the miserable figure of Jesus for Himself.
“Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” John21:18 After Pentecost, Peter proceeded to the way of martyr not for his dream but for the dream of the Lord. We should examine our hearts whether we project our own dream and desire on Jesus and follow Him being fallen in our delusion, or whether we are compelled by the love and word of God and His Spirit and follow Him toward our way of cross with joy. 26.
