1. Gouldian Finch, 2021, by Tim Flach 2021

Gemma Padley says ‘What unites all these projects is their ability to breathe new life into a timeless subject. They artfully and playfully encourage us to look again at the boundless wonders of the avian world. And, ultimately, they remind us why we should care about these miraculous creatures hidden in plain sight: not only to protect their lives, but to enrich our own.’ New Photography of the Bird is published by Hoxton Mini Press.

2. Fido/Googly Eye [Pigeon], 2016–19, by Andrew Garn 2016~19

The humble pigeon: not a bird most give a second thought, let alone spend a decade photographing. Andrew Garn’s images show pigeons from angles that we are not used to seeing them, imbuing them with charisma and encouraging us to consider these familiar creatures with more sympathetic eyes.

3. Black Langshan Cockerel, 2009, by Tamara Staples 2009

Gemma Padley writes: ‘Birds are both unexceptional and astounding. They are a constant and often unremarkable presence in our lives, as likely to flutter past in the countryside or on a city street. Yet, if we only pay attention, they also possess a formidable ability to fascinate’.

4. Assimilation 11 [Sociable Weaver Nest], 2010, by Dillon Marsh 2010

The sociable weaver bird is endemic to Southern Africa. These ingenious hut-like creations, carefully constructed from grass and twigs, are visible across the southern Kalahari desert; the birds typically make their nests in trees, but in this barren landscape telephone poles must suffice.

5. Technicolor Snowstorm [Northern Cardinal], 2021, by Carla Rhodes 2021

This image give us a bird’s eye view, but not as we normally know it. Rather than seeing the world from up high, we are down on the ground, foraging for food in the snow.

6. Gentoo Penguins, 2021, by Tim Flach 2021

Known for his astonishingly detailed studio portraits of animals, Tim Flach spent three years photographing an array of captive-bred birds for this project – from cockatoos to hornbills, terns to toucans. Flach adapted his studio many times while shooting – having specialist aviaries built or a duck pond constructed to put his subjects at ease – and the UK’s Covid lockdowns also allowed him to rig lighting to photograph the penguins at the London Aquarium while it was closed to the public.

7. Untitled [Parakeets], 2013, by Yoshinori Mizutani 2013

Confronted one day by swarms of parakeets circling a tree near his home in Tokyo, Mizutani was struck by fear. It was, he says, as though he’d walked into Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. As initial shock turned to curiosity, he began tracking the birds around the city – spending the next year photographing them as they darted through the sky or perched on telephone lines. These lime-green birds were first introduced to Japan from India and Sri Lanka in the 1960s: initially sold as pets, they have since multiplied across the capital.

8. Spreo Starling #1, 2019, by Luke Stephenson 2019

This project started with a simple idea: to depict budgies in the style of prize pigeon photographs, wherein the bird is typically positioned centre stage against a contrasting coloured background to show off its form. Stephenson began to subvert the norms of pigeon photography by experimenting with tonal backdrops to accentuate the birds’ beauty rather than just their shape.

9. Anthropoides paradisea [Blue Crane], 2017, by Julia Tatarchenko 2017

Tatarchenko’s atmospheric bird portraits showcase her meticulous handling of natural light and shadow. Shooting in a zoological park, she captures her subjects with the eye and skill of a still-life photographer. Our attention is drawn to a graceful neck or an expressive eye, a textured beak or a silky feather, and all become exquisite and extraordinary.

10. Untitled #163 [Flamingos], 2011, by Simen Johan 2011

These uncanny, illusory images trigger a double-take. Are the birds real or not? Alive with intrigue, each of these hyper-real images has been painstakingly composed from multiple shots taken in wildlife parks, zoos and the wild. Johan’s resulting images are immersively, irresistibly bizarre.

11. Bearded Buff Laced Polish Frizzle Bantam Hen, 2008, by Tamara Staples 2008

‘Magnificent’ and ‘chicken’ are not words normally seen together, but in the case of Tamara Staples’ fabulously styled portraits, the adjective couldn’t be more apt. Her images show that chicken breeding can be an art. A great deal of care and passion goes into the breeding process, and for some people it is their life’s work.

12. Ara macao [Scarlet Macaw], 2013–14, by Katerina Kaloudi 2013

To see birds’ wings in this way is to begin to appreciate the sheer complexity of nature. Such a zoomed-in focus on the hues and structure of their feathers made Kaloudi feel, she says, as ‘if I was swimming in magical waves’.

13. Ivory Gate [Yellow-Rumped Warbler], 2013, by Yola Monakhov Stockton 2013

Monakhov Stockton’s subjects include both wild and captive birds in images that deftly play with the conventions of art and photography.

14. Condor Dolly Portrait Gaze [California Condor], 2014, by Janice Tieken 2014

Anyone who thinks birds don’t have personalities will stand corrected by inquisitive, mischievous, three-year-old Dolly, the California condor. Unable to survive in the wild due to a broken wing, she now lives in Los Angeles Zoo.

15. Bird’s Eye View [Blue Tit], 2020, by Mark Harvey 2020

Mark Harvey made these images close to his home in the Norfolk Broads in the spring of 2020. Like many people, the UK’s Covid-19 lockdown had made him appreciate anew the nature on his doorstep. ‘It was about capturing moments not seen by the human eye,’ says Harvey, ‘and making the viewer feel as though they can reach out and touch them’.

16. Sustenance 114 [European Starlings], 2003, by Neeta Madahar 2003

Ordinary scenes become extraordinary in Madahar’s images. The familiar sight of birds visiting a garden bird feeder is rendered dreamlike by her brightly lit, richly coloured compositions.
