72 Every system of thought must have a starting point. It begins with either a making or a creating, a difference which we have discussed already. Their resemblance lies in their power as foundations. Their difference lies in what rests upon them. Both are cornerstones for systems of belief by which men live. It is a mistake to believe that a thought system which is based on lies is weak. Nothing made by a Child of God is without power. It is essential to realize this because otherwise you will not understand why you have so much trouble with this course and will be unable to escape from the prisons which you have made for yourselves.

​72 모든 사고체계에는 반드시 출발점이 있다. 각 사고체계는 만들기와 창조하기 중 하나로 시작하는데, 그 차이에 대해서는 이미 논했다. 이 둘의 유사성은 그것들이 토대로서 힘을 가지고 있다는 점이며, 이 둘의 차이점은 그 위에 무엇이 얹혀 있느냐에 달려있다. 둘 다 사람이 의거해 살아가는 믿음체계의 초석이다. 거짓말에 기반을 둔 사고체계가 약하다고 믿는 것은 착각이다. 하느님의 아이가 만든 것 중에 힘이 없는 것은 아무것도 없다. 이것을 깨닫는 것이 아주 중요하다. 그렇지 않으면 너희가 이 수업을 왜 그토록 힘들어하는지 이해할 수 없으며, 너희 자신이 만든 감옥에서 벗어날 수도 없기 때문이다.

73 You cannot resolve the authority problem by depreciating the power of your minds. To do so is to deceive yourself, and this will hurt you because you know the strength of the mind. You also know that you cannot weaken it, any more than you can weaken God. The "devil" is a frightening concept because he is thought of as extremely powerful and extremely active. He is perceived as a force in combat with God, battling Him for possession of the Souls He created. He deceives by lies and builds kingdoms of his own in which everything is in direct opposition to God. Yet he attracts men rather than repels them, and they are seen as willing to "sell" him their Souls in return for gifts they recognize are of no real worth.

​73 너 자신의 마음의 힘을 깎아내려서 권위 문제를 해결할 수는 없다. 그것은 너 자신을 속이는 것이며, 그 결과로 너는 상처를 입을 것이다. 왜냐하면 너는 마음의 힘을 알기 때문이다. 너는 또한 네가 하느님을 약화시킬 수 없듯이, 네 마음의 힘도 약화시킬 수 없음을 안다. “마귀”라는 개념이 무시무시한 이유는, 사람들이 그것을 굉장히 강력하고 활동적이라고 여기기 때문이다. 사람들은 마귀를 하느님이 창조하신 영혼들의 소유권을 놓고 하느님과 전쟁 중에 있는 힘이라고 지각한다. 마귀는 거짓말로 속이며, 모든 측면에서 하느님과 대립하는 자신의 왕국을 세운다. 하지만 마귀는 사람들을 물리치기는커녕 매혹하며, 그들은 스스로 아무 가치도 없음을 아는 선물을 얻으려고 자신의 영혼을 기꺼이 마귀에게 “팔아넘기려고” 하는 듯하다.

74 This makes absolutely no sense. The whole picture is one in which man acts in a way he himself realizes is self-destructive but which he does not choose to correct and therefore perceives the cause as beyond his control. We have discussed the fall, or separation, before, but its meaning must be clearly understood without symbols. The separation is not symbolic. It is an order of reality or a system of thought that is real enough in time, though not in eternity. All beliefs are real to the believer.

​74 이것은 전혀 말이 안 된다. 사실 이런 현상의 전모는, 사람이 스스로 자기 파괴적임을 잘 깨닫고 있는 방식으로 행동하면서도 그것을 교정하려는 선택을 하지 않음으로써, 그 원인이 자신의 통제 밖에 있다고 지각하는 것이다. 우리는 전에 타락, 즉 분리에 대해 논했지만, 그것의 의미를 상징 없이 분명히 이해해야 한다. 분리는 상징적이지 않다. 분리는 비록 영원 안에서는 아니지만 시간 안에서는 충분히 실제적인, 실재의 한 등급 혹은 하나의 사고체계다. 모든 믿음은 그것을 믿는 자에게 실제적이다.

75 The fruit of only one tree was "forbidden" to man in his symbolic garden. But God could not have forbidden it or it could not have been eaten. If God knows His Children, and I assure you that He does, would He have put them in a position where their own destruction was possible? The "tree" which was forbidden was named the "tree of knowledge." Yet God created knowledge and gave it freely to His creations. The symbolism here has been given many interpretations, but you may be sure that any interpretation which sees either God or His creations as capable of destroying their own purpose is in error.

​75 사람의 상징적인 동산에서 한 그루의 나무 열매만이 그에게 “금지”되었다. 그러나 하느님이 그것을 금지하셨을 리가 없다. 만약 금지하셨다면, 사람은 그 열매를 따 먹을 수 없었을 것이다. 진실히 말하건대, 하느님은 당신의 자녀들을 아신다. 그러한 분이 그들을 자기 파괴가 가능한 상태에 놓아두셨겠는가? 금지된 나무는 “지식knowledge의 나무”라고 불린다. 하지만 하느님은 앎knowledge을 창조하셔서 당신의 피조물들에게 거저 주셨다. 그동안 이 상징에 대해 많은 해석이 있어왔지만, 하느님이든 그의 피조물들이든 자신의 목적을 파괴할 수 있다고 보는 어떤 해석도 잘못이다. 이를 확신해도 좋다.

76 Eating of the fruit of the tree of knowledge is a symbolic expression‎ for incorporating into the self the ability for self-creating. This is the only sense in which God and His Souls are not co-creators. The belief that they are is implicit in the "self concept," a concept now made acceptable by its weakness and explained by a tendency of the self to create an image of itself. Its fear aspect is often ascribed to fear of retaliation by a "father figure," a particularly curious idea in view of the fact that no one uses the term to refer to the physical father. It refers to an image of a father in relation to an image of the self.

​76 지식의 나무 열매를 먹는 것은 자아 안에 자기를 창조하는 능력을 편입시키는 것을 상징적으로 표현한 것이다. 바로 이 한 가지 의미에서만 하느님과 그의 영혼들은 공동 창조자가 아니다. 그들이 공동 창조자라는 믿음은 “자아 개념”에 내포되어 있다. 이 자아 개념이라는 것은 이제 그 약함 때문에 받아들일 만하게 되었고, 자신의 이미지를 창조하려는 자아의 경향으로 설명되는 개념이다. 흔히들 자아의 두려워하는 측면을 “아버지 같은 존재”의 보복에 대한 두려움 탓으로 여긴다. 그런데 아무도 이 용어를 육체적인 아버지를 가리키기 위해 사용하지 않는다는 사실에 비추어, 이것은 특히 이상한 아이디어다. 그것은 자아의 이미지와 관련된 아버지의 이미지를 가리킬 뿐이다.

77 Images are perceived, not known. Knowledge cannot deceive, but perception can. Man can perceive himself as self-creating, but he cannot do more than believe it. He cannot make it true. And, as we said before, when you finally perceive correctly, you can only be glad that you cannot. But until then, the belief that you can is the central foundation stone in your thought system, and all your defenses are used to attack ideas which might bring it to light. You still believe you are images of your own creation. Your minds are split with your Souls on this point, and there is no resolution while you believe the one thing that is literally inconceivable. That is why you cannot create and are filled with fear about what you make.

​77 이미지는 알려지는 것이 아니라 지각되는 것이다. 앎은 속일 수 없지만 지각은 속일 수 있다. 사람은 자신을 자기 창조적이라고 지각할 수는 있지만, 그렇게 믿는 것 이상은 할 수 없다. 사람은 그것을 참인 것으로 만들 수 없다. 전에 말했듯이 네가 마침내 바르게 지각하게 된다면, 그렇게 할 수 없다는 것에 기뻐할 수밖에 없다. 하지만 그때까지는, 그렇게 할 수 있다는 믿음이 너의 사고체계에서 핵심적인 주춧돌이다. 그리고 너는 모든 방어기제를 다 동원하여 그 믿음을 빛으로 가져갈 아이디어를 공격한다. 너는 여전히 네가 창조한 이미지들이 너라고 믿는다. 이 점에서 너의 마음은 너의 영혼과 갈라져 있으며, 상상도 하지 못할 이 한 가지를 믿는 한 해결책은 없다. 바로 이런 이유로 너는 창조할 수 없으며, 네가 만드는 것을 몹시도 두려워한다.

78 The mind can make the belief in separation very real and very fearful, and this belief is the "devil." It is powerful, active, destructive, and clearly in opposition to God because it literally denies His Fatherhood. Never underestimate the power of this denial. Look at your lives and see what the devil has made. But know that this making will surely dissolve in the light of truth because its foundation is a lie.

​78 마음은 분리에 대한 믿음을 아주 실제적이고 무시무시하게 만들 수 있는데, 이런 믿음이 곧 “마귀”다. 이 믿음은 강력하고 활동적이고 파괴적이며, 그야말로 하느님의 부성을 부정하기에 명백히 하느님과 대립한다. 이런 부정의 힘을 결코 과소평가하지 말라. 너의 삶을 들여다보고, 마귀가 만들어 놓은 것을 보라. 그러나 이렇게 만들어진 것은 그 토대가 거짓말이기에, 진리의 빛 속에 녹아 사라질 수밖에 없음을 알라.

79 Your creation by God is the only foundation which cannot be shaken because the light is in it. Your starting point is truth, and you must return to this beginning. Much has been perceived since then, but nothing else has happened. That is why your Souls are still in peace, even though your minds are in conflict. You have not yet gone back far enough, and that is why you become so fearful. As you approach the beginning, you feel the fear of the destruction of your thought system upon you, as if it were the fear of death. There is no death, but there is a belief in death.

​79 하느님이 너를 창조하셨다는 것은 흔들릴 수 없는 유일한 토대다. 왜냐하면, 빛이 그 안에 있기 때문이다. 너는 진리에서 출발하였으며, 반드시 이 시작점으로 돌아가야 한다. 그 이후로 많은 것이 지각되었지만, 그 밖의 것은 아무것도 일어나지 않았다. 따라서 너의 마음은 비록 갈등 속에 있을지라도, 너의 영혼은 여전히 평화 속에 있다. 너는 아직 충분히 멀리 돌아가지 않았으며, 이것이 바로 네가 극심한 두려움을 느끼는 이유다. 시작점에 다가감에 따라, 너는 자신의 사고체계가 파괴되는 것에 대한 두려움이 엄습하는 것을 느낀다. 그것은 마치 죽음에 대한 두려움과 같다. 죽음은 없지만, 죽음에 대한 믿음은 있다.

80 The Bible says that the branch that bears no fruit will be cut off and will wither away. Be glad! The light will shine from the true Foundation of Life, and your own thought system will stand corrected. It cannot stand otherwise. You who fear salvation are willing death. Life and death, light and darkness, knowledge and perception are irreconcilable. To believe that they can be reconciled is to believe that God and man can not. Only the oneness of knowledge is conflictless. Your kingdom is not of this world because it was given you from beyond this world. Only in this world is the idea of an authority problem meaningful. The world is not left by death but by truth, and truth can be known by all those for whom the Kingdom was created and for whom it waits.

​80 성서는, 열매를 맺지 못하는 가지는 잘려져 시들어버릴 것이라고 말한다. 기뻐하라! 생명의 진정한 토대로부터 빛이 뿜어져 나올 것이다. 그리고 너 자신의 사고체계는 바로 설 것이다. 그것은 다른 식으로는 서 있을 수 없다. 구원을 두려워하는 너는 죽음을 뜻하고 있다. 삶과 죽음, 빛과 어둠, 앎과 지각은 양립할 수 없다. 그것들이 양립할 수 있다고 믿는 것은, 하느님과 사람이 양립할 수 없다고 믿는 것이다. 오로지 앎의 하나인 상태만이 갈등에서 자유롭다. 너의 왕국은 이 세상 너머로부터 주어졌기에, 이 세상 것이 아니다. 오로지 이 세상 안에서만, 권위 문제라는 아이디어가 의미 있다. 죽어서 세상을 떠나는 것이 아니라, 진리로 떠난다. 진리는 정녕 모든 이에게 알려질 수 있다. 천국은 그들을 위해 창조되었으며, 그들을 기다린다.

Your starting point is truth, and you must return to this beginning.
Only the oneness of knowledge is conflictless.
The truth can be known by all those for whom the Kingdom was created and for whom it waits.
