I still Need to Do Last-Minute Shopping.

A: I can’t believe Christmas is tomorrow! I still need to do last- minute Christmas shopping.

B: What! It’s Christmas Eve and you’re supposed to relax and enjoy this day.

A: I know I know, this will be the last year I put myself in this situation. So what are you planning to do today?

Any special Christmas Eve traditions with your family?

B: Our family wings it, but luckily there are lots of great options for Christmas Eve activities like watching movies, or stuffing stockings with goodies.

How about you? Anything else planned besides last- minute shopping?

A: I’m going caroling with my kids tonight.

B: That sounds wonderful! Anyways, Merry Christmas!

A: 내일이 벌써 크리스 마스라니, 믿겨지지 않아! 난 (선물을 아직 다 못사서) 크리스마스 바로 전까지 쇼핑해야해.

B: 뭐라고? 오늘이 크리스 마스 전날이잖아.. 긴장을  풀고 맘껏 즐기는 날이라구.

A: 나도 알아, 내년 부터는 절대 이런일 없을 거야.

그건 그렇고, 넌 오늘 뭐할거니? 너희 가족 만의 크리스마스 전날 하는 특별한 전통 같은거라도 있니?

B: 그런건 없고 그냥 즉흥적으로 뭘할 지 결정하는 편인데, 영화를 본다든지, 산타 양말에 맛있는 것을 넣어 놓는 다든지 등 할 건 많이 있을 것 같아.

넌? 쇼핑 말고 뭐 다른 계획은 없니?

A: 난 오늘 밤 아이들과 함께 새벽송 부르러 다니려고.

B: 좋은 생각이네! 암튼 즐거운 크리스마스 보내!

▷ I can’t believe Christmas is tomorrow! I still need to do last- minute Christmas shopping.

- ‘Christmas eve’ 는 크리스 마스 하루 전날, 그러니까 ‘12월 24일’을 의미하고요, ‘Last- minute’은 ‘마지막 분, 마지막 순간 ’을 의미합니다. 그래서, ‘I still need to do last-minute something’은 ‘마지막 순간까지 ~무엇 무엇을 해야한다’는 뜻이죠!

[참고] Do last minute something , 이 표현은 또 ‘To do something at the last minute’과 바꿔쓸 수도 있습니다. 그래서 ‘I still need to do last-minute Christmas shopping’은 ‘I still need to do Christmas shopping at the last minute.’이라고 할 수도 있습니다.

그럼 이 ‘Do last minute something’을 어떤 상황에서 쓸 수 있는지 알아볼까요?

예를 들어 다음날 여행을 떠나는데, 하루 전 날까지 짐을 안싸고 미루다가 밤 늦게서야 부리나케 짐을 싸는 경우, ‘나 (여행 떠나기 ) 마지막 순간까지 여행 짐싸야해!’ 영어로는 ‘I still need to do last minute packing for my trip!’할 수 있습니다.

그럼 반대로 어떤 것을 ‘미리 미리하다’는 영어로 어떻게 나타낼 수 있을까요?

‘Plan ahead, get organized, get something done ahead of time’ 같은 표현 쓸 수 있습니다.

예를 들어 ‘난 크리스마스 쇼핑 미리 다 해놨어!’ 영어로는 ‘I finished Christmas shopping ahead of time.’이라고 할 수 있구요, ‘I did plan ahead for this year’s Christmas.’ 하면 ‘난 올해 크리스마스 파티 계획 다 세워놓았어 .’ 라는 뜻이됩니다.

이렇게 마지막 순간에 허겁 지겁 서둘러 하지 않기 위해서는 ‘그날 해야 할 일을 그날 하면 되는데요,’ ‘오늘 할 일을 내일로 미루지 마세요!’ 영어로는

‘Do not procrastinate!’ 또는’Don’t put off things until the last minute.’라고 할 수 있다는 것도 기억해 두세요!

▷ It’s Christmas Eve and you’re supposed to relax and enjoy this day.

- Be supposed to V 는 ‘~(무엇 무엇) 하기로 되어있는’라는 뜻입니다. 그래서 ‘It’s Christmas Eve and you’re supposed to relax and enjoy this day.’는 ‘오늘 크리스마스 전날이잖니. 긴장을 풀고 맘 껏 즐겨야 하는 날이라고!’라는 뜻입니다.

이 ‘Be supposed to V’ 일상생활에서 정말 많이 쓰이는 표현인데요, 예문을 통해 어떤 상황에서 쓸 수 있는지 알아보겠습니다

I put myself in this situation 내가 이런 상황에 처하게 되는 건

즉 ‘내가 이런 사황에 처하게 되는 건 올해가 마지막이 될거야!’라는 뜻입니다.

‘Put oneself’ 는 ‘to bring someone into the state or condition mentioned’즉 ‘(누군가를) 어떤 상태에 처하게 하다’라는 뜻이 있는데요, 예를 들어 ‘그건 네가 자초한 일이야, 네가 너를 그런 상황에 처하게 만들었어!’ 영어로는,  ‘You put yourself in that situation.’이라고 할 수 있겠죠!

Ex) 당신이 만약 그녀의 입장에서 생각해보면 그녀를 더 잘 이해할 수 있을 겁니다.

You will understand her better if you put yourself in her situation.

그 사람들의 입장에서 한번 생각해 봅시다. 영어로는?

- Our family wings it, 우리 가족은 즉흥적으로 한다, 임기 응변으로 한다는 말인데요, ‘wing it’ ‘Wing, W I N G / it, I T’은 ‘to do something without planning or preparation’, ‘사전에 준비나 계획 없이 그냥 즉흥적으로 무엇인가를 하는 것’을 의미합니다.

‘Play it by ear’ 무슨 뜻일까요?

to decide what to do according to the way a situation develops, without making plans before that time

Play it by ear, 은 without making plans before that time, 사전에 어떤 계획도 없이 according to the way a situation develops 상황이 진행되는 것에 따라 to decide what to do  무엇을 할지 결정하는 것을 의미합니다.

즉 즉흥적으로 ~ (무엇 무엇을) 하다는 뜻이 죠!

‘ wing it’ 과 같은 뜻입니다.

그럼 ‘play it by ear’이 들어간 예문을 알아볼까요?

Bob: What time can we meet? 7 or 7:30?

우리 몇시에 만나지? 7시? 아니면 7시 30분?

CAT: Well, it depends on the traffic.

교통 상황에 따라 달라질 것 같은데..
