8. Alliance / Union(Su Ji Bi / Hexagram 8)
◎ The Bi Hexagram(比卦,비괘) teaches how to build close and affectionate relationships.
It represents the inverted image of the war-oriented Shi Hexagram(師卦,사괘 Hexagram 7),
dealing with the question of how to establish peaceful relations after a war ends.
If the Shi Hexagram(師卦,사괘) represents emerging as a new political power through
a bloody war, the Bi Hexagram(比卦,비괘) representa shaping a new order centered
around the new leader.
The lesson of the Bi Hexagram(比卦,비괘) lies in demonstrating harmonious,
mutually beneficial relationshils between nature and humans,
individuals and groups, workers and employers, as well as nation and nation.
[Explanation]
Union brings good fortune. Inquire again by divination:
if there is fundamental, persistent, and righteous perseverance, there will be no blame.
Those who are uneasy and restless will come from all sides.
the latecomer will meet with misfortune.
[Commentary]
If the ruler becomes close with his subjects/people, it will bring good fortune.
If one examine the origin(and if judgment is correct),
Keeping the monarch's closeness correct and steadfast over a long period will ensure no blame.
If the monarch works tirelessly without taking comfortable rests,
the people will finally gather and come to him The husband(or latecomer) who arrives late
will encounter misfortune.
In the Bi Hexagram(比卦,비괘), among five Yin(陰,음) lines, nine in the fifth line[九五,구오]
is the sole Yang(陽,양) line residing in the position of the king.
Position 5 is an exalter position representing the monarch, a great master, and a leader.
Reaching this position implies that one possesses a complete blend of experience,
scholarship, virtue, wisdom, and ample wealth.
Thus, all the Yin(陰,음) lines under Heaven gather to seek closeness.
In the Xugua Zhuan(序卦傳,서괘전), Confucius noter the Bi(比,비) means 'Closeness'[親也,친야],
and in the Zagua Zhuan(雜卦傳,잡괘전), he stated it as 'enjoying closeness' [比樂,비락].
Furthermore, in the Wenyan Zhuan(文言傳,문언전) of the Qian Hexagram(乾卦,건괘),it is said :
"That which is rooted in Heaven seeks closeness with what is above [本乎天者親上,본호천자친상],
and that which is rooter in Earth seeka closeness with what is below [本乎地者親下,본호지자친하];
each gathers according to its kind and draws close to its own
Water flowing downward seeps without hesitation in to the dry ground,
forming a close and selfless bond.
From close personal intimacy to the public relationship of mutual care and loyalty between
a monarch and his subiects, all of this is encompassed in 'Bi(比,비)'.
Just as water seeps into the earth, if a king draws close to his subjects with warmth,
what difficulty could there be in governing the nation?
The Bi Hexagram(比卦,비괘) originates from the Ji-lei-bok Hexagram
Hexagram 24).
The master of Zhen(震,진 - Thunder) ascends to position 5,
rectifyingthe royal status to govern subjects―this is the virtue of a monarch.
Although 'Bi(比,비)' can mean 'to compare' or 'to be similar,' here it refers to 'Chin-bi(親比,친비),
where strangers rub shoulders, make physical contact, embrace each other,
and grow close in any form.
'Won-seo'(原筮,원서 - original/ fundeamental divination) means a fundamental judgment.
Divination using milfoil stalks(筮竹,서죽) was the supreme method for acquiring ancient
divine wisdom[神道,신도].
Mobilizing every available method under Heaven and Earth,
it is an act of seeking theunknown world through ultimate calculation;
Confucius referred to this as "divination that exhausts numbers to foresee the future"
Therefore, divination mentioned here refers to judging fromthe perapective
of the Divinne Way(神道,신도).
Divination must be obtained from the righteous way[永貞,영정] without any selfishness
at any moment, coming from the heart of a ruler who acts with utmost sincerity [元,원] ;
this is why 'no blame'[无咎,무구] is expressed as '元永貞(원영정 - fundamental, persistent,
and righteous perseverance)'.
Otherwise, if even a speck of selfshness enters that mind for the sack of temporary
joy and sorrow, it is clear that a correct and upright judgment cannot be reached,
which is way '原筮(원서 - original/ fundeamental divination)' is emphasized.
However, if one comes seeking help due to feeling uneasy even without fundamrntal principles
[不寧方來,불녕방래], it is already too late to lead them uprightly under any circumstances. Furthermore, even in marriage―a great human affair where closeness is paramount
[此中最親比,차중최친비]― if there were no fundamental judgment(原筮,원서),
one comes to realize only after remarrying late that the husband will face misfortune
ln other words, it is a stern warning that if you perform divination only after everything
has alresdy gone wrong, even Heaven cannot take your side.
The Bi Hexagram(比卦,비괘) comes right after the Shi Hexagram(師卦,사괘).
That is, after war(hardship), it asks whom and where one should seek out to live in close harmony, and whom to appoint to entrust the country and company.
This is to first recognize and judge whether the lord(主君,주군) whom l will trust, rely on,
and follow in the future has established fundamental principles [元,원],
makes good selections [善長,선장], and is a virtuous elder [丈人,장인],
who embodies benevolence [體仁,체인].
Only then can they serve and assist each other while permanently maintaining the rightous way.
Otherwise, it is obvious that ;with blame[有咎,유구] filled with anxiety and worry― rather than
'no blame[無咎,무구] ― will follow, leading to uneasiness[不寧,불녕].
Therefore, in this Bi Hexagram(比卦,비괘), there is no other choice than the lord(主君,주군)
at position 5 as the person to become close with.
Thus, the lesson here demands swift decisions and decisiveness.
Whether, in personal relationships or alliances between nations,
timing is always crucial in relationships.
However, if one misses the critical timing by weighing private self-interests,
even if friendship or alliance is achieved late, even if friendship or alliance is achieved late,
that relationship can never be smooth and harmonious,
and one cannot help but lose even the chance of survival and meet misfortune.
As an example, during the reign of Emperor Yu(禹,우),
Bangpung (防風,방풍) arrived late to the audience(朝見,조현),
and when the whole world submitted to the Han(漢,한) Dynasty, Tian Heng(田橫,전횡) never came.
Thus, Bangpung was executed, and Tian Heng committed suicide;
this is the final outcome of the 'Latecomer / Late Husband[後夫,후부].
Initial Six[初六,초육] applies when the Bi Hexagram(比卦,비괘) changes into the Tun Hexagram
Hexagram 3].
Zhu Xi, citing a divination story from Zuo Zhuan(좌전) as an example, recorded that when
Cui Muzi tried to remarry by taking a wife, he obtained the second line(二爻,이효),
which was so disastrous that an incident occurred where the king was assassinated
because of the wife.
Latecomer / Late Husband)' is viewed as a 'second husband who comes later'
'one who causes unpleasantness,' and is also seen simply as 'one who comes later' or,
like Zhu Xi, 'a remarried man'.
