Did A Magpie Ever Ask Me
by D.J. YOON
Sweet potatoes piled in the back room
Dried persimmons hang under the eaves
hanging hanging
I made ice skates and carved some tops
I also made a shield kite
Wishing for the stream to freeze in front
This winter vacation, I hope you play as you like
Study, study, but don’t forget to take a break
Every vacation, you go to academies
You say you're busier during the break
My 3rd and 5th graders living in Seoul
You siblings, my dear grandchildren
Today, your grandpa walked to the bus stop in front of the village
Wondering if you would come
Your grandpa went there and came back three times
Each time I returned home alone
A magpie seemed like asking me, sitting on a bare branch of a persimmon tree
Asking if your grandchildren aren't coming today
croak croak croak croak
Wondering when they will come
croak croak croak croak

Appreciation Review 感想
"Did A Magpie Ever Ask Me" is a sweet poem about a grandpa waiting for a visit from his grandchildren.
It describes a cozy winter with sweet potatoes and dried persimmons.
The poem shows the fun of childhood, like making ice skates and kites, and contrasts it with the busy lives of the grandchildren.
The grandpa keeps walking to the bus stop and returns again and again, hoping to see his lovely grandchildren, while a magpie on the bare branch of a tree seems to share his feelings.
This touching poem reminds us to enjoy time with family and balance work with play, making it a lovely read for everyone.
