Hansan ramie originated in the Baekje Kingdom and was sent as tribute to kings during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Hand-woven, white ramie textiles from Hansan area have long been renowned for their fine texture, porosity, snow-white color, and gossamer lightness, which made them the preferred material for summer clothing. The festival marked its 15th anniversary in 2004. Each year, it offers a wonderful time to appreciate ramie fabrics and elegant traditional ramie clothes, as well as trendy new styles. Visitors can try on ramie clothes. Nationally designated masters will visitors the hand splitting of raw ramie, thread twining by hand, weaving on a loom, and dyeing.
