GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS (ABC NEWS)(OC): Today, we got some agonizing news about former Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who, as you know, died from cancer two weeks ago. It turns out that he wrestled with the decision over how to treat his cancer. And in a new biography out next week, we learned that he regretted the choice he made, a choice that probably shortened his life. ABC's Sharyn Alfonsi has more.
SHARYN ALFONSI (ABC NEWS)(VO): He had access to the best medical treatments, the best surgeons in the world. But Steve Jobs, diagnosed with deadly pancreatic cancer, reportedly refused to allow surgeons to perform what could have been life-saving surgery, fearing it was too invasive. Instead, he tried alternative therapies and later said he regretted that decision. It's just one of the stunning revelations in the Steve Jobs authorized biography.
SHARYN ALFONSI (ABC NEWS)(VO): Walter Isaacson, who conducted more than 40 interviews with Jobs for the book, some of them taped right before his death said no subject was off-limits. Of his early days, Jobs revealed that he was often bullied in school. That he stopped going to church at age 13 after he saw a photo of a starving child on the cover of "Life" magazine, leading him to later study Zen Buddhism.
SHARYN ALFONSI (ABC NEWS)(VO): Jobs experimented with various diets and said he was on "one of my fruitarian diets" when he decided to name the company Apple. He'd just come back from an apple farm and thought the name sounded "fun, spirited and not intimidating." And of the design that became so distinctly Apple, Jobs revealed his inspirations was a Cuisinart food processor he saw at a department store. He was so impressed by the sleek design, he decided to make the case of one of the first Apple computers out of molded plastic instead of metal. Apple's first president, Mike Scott, is interviewed for the book, too. He says one of his first projects was to get Jobs, then CEO to shower and it didn't really work. The book comes out Monday and like so many things Jobs touched it's already a best seller. Sharyn Alfonsi, ABC News, New York.
